I don't have a data plan and I want to get a Nokia Lumia 800. I have a standard SIM but I hear that it only uses the micro-SIM cards? I'm gonna buy one of those cutters for it though.

Do I need a data plan to activate/use an unlocked Nokia Lumia 800 like I would with pretty much any version of Android? Or can I activate it/set it up over wifi without a data plan (like during inital set up) as with most custons roms for Android?

Thanks :D

I haven't done it so won't say I am 100% sure, but am fairly sure if you can successfully carrier unlock it, it will work on ATT.

You won't need a data plan. You can set up your device over wifi. The first time set up might ask you to log in via your live ID, choose 'Later' and finish the set up. Once set up, go to settings, connect to wifi. Then try and attempt to buy something off Marketplace. It will ask for connecting to your live ID then. Good choice though! Every time I hear about Lumia, my heart skips a beat ;)

Ah, thank you. I was looking everywhere and looking at inital setup things on youtube to see if it was in fact possible to set it up over wifi and use a non-data sim card. Its gonna suck cutting my sim into a micro-sim because im afraid of breaking it or cutting too far but there seems to be some pretty respectable guides out there.

My wife doesn't have a data plan. When i got my titan i gave her my surround and after i reset the surround, we just slapped the sim out of her samsung flip onto it and under settings turned off cellular data.

When you are in the initial setup, you can disable data completely. I'm not sure that going to Settings=>Cellular and shutting off "Data connection" accomplishes the same thing...

Since you purchased a factory unlocked model, your good to go on the sim card front.

was this on AT&T?

i tried this with a Samsung Focus (replaced a damaged feature phone) and AT&T added a smartphone data plan, cant they tell as soon as u boot the phone up what kind of device u have via the IMEI?

I called to cancel the data plan and they told me i had to get a non smartphone then, i had a replacement i just wanted to see if the focus would work for that person at the time. I for sure slid the data off and was just using Wifi.

I have been using a developer seed Lumia 800 for a few months now on at&t a few of those I had no data and just used wifi. I have since switched to the $10 unlimited 3G data for feature phones plan. As long as the phone isn't an at&t phone you don't need a data plan, but if the phone shows up in thier system then they will switch you automatically. and yes you have to cut your SIM but as long as you do it right and dont cut the contact part you'll be fine.

Yes ATT, they can tell but they don't look unless you are using data. 2 months in and plan hasn't changed, no data still and she uses WiFi.
