I see many mentions of a 16GB model, always on the assumption that it 'would follow.'

It now seems clear this will not be the case. Thanks for pointing it out.

Can the bootloader be unlocked on all moto G 4G's or just some? As in, when I bought an xperia phone that was network unlocked I was not allowed to unlock it. I am wondering is it the same story with the moto G, I can get it for 50 euro cheaper if I buy it on a network than buying it unlocked, but I dont want to risk it incase I cannot unlock the bootloader.

I just picked up one and I'll need to root at some point because of the SD card.

Is there a way to remove the bootloader warning and return to stock via fastboot with a retail 4.4.4 GB ROM (21.1.46) on XT1039?

I know that the former involves a modified file and the latter I believe a factory firmware but I've found neither so far for my firmware (made worse since searches can bring up for the older models).

Or alternatively root without touching the bootloader (no recovery I know)?

I did but didn't find anything for my firmware or device (closest being the EU version or a different variant device).
I don't believe there is a GB specific stock ROM - just flash the EU one. Maybe someone who's bought an unbranded XT1039 in the UK from Amazon or somewhere can confirm it's the 'EU' variant?

[EDIT: or keep an eye on this thread]

Flashing this will get rid of the bootloader unlocked screen. Your device will still be detectable as having been unlocked even if you relock the bootloader. You'll have to unlock the bootloader to root the device though. If you want to remain 'stock', you don't need to flash a recovery - you could just boot to a custom recovery with 'fastboot boot recovery.img' rather than flashing it, and flash SuperSU from there. When you reboot you'll still have the stock bootloader and OTAs should still work.

Thank you.

On my device it does say "retgb" in the version number (21.1.46.peregrine_retgb_retgball.en.GB retgb) so I guess I'll just have to keep an eye on that thread as you say. It was bought unbranded and unlocked from Argos here in the UK.

So it's ok to flash logos from different regions? I just don't like the idea of seeing an annoying warning everytime I boot.

Well it's working fine on my UK XT1039. And for the other people who have tested it in the quoted thread. It's not like the /logo partition is anything to do with the radio, I would assume its the same on all variants, even the non-LTE falcon ones. In fact, I would bet you could flash a falcon ROM on your peregrine and it would just break 4G and access to your SD card (I'm not about to try though).

Also the EU firmware will work fine on UK models. I'm not sure what the differences are beyond the 'EU' string in the baseband version etc - probably just different legal information in 'about this phone'. It'll still pick up all the UK carriers and what have you.

If you absolutely must have the exact same firmware version you have now, just take a Nandroid backup from a custom recovery (which, remember, you can just boot to using a PC without even flashing it) before messing about with flashing new firmware. On the offchance no GB firmware appears, you'll be able to restore your backup since you'll have unlocked your bootloader. You would only need a Motorola supplied stock image in order to flash it to a bootloader-locked phone, since such a phone will only let you flash Motorola-signed images.

I wouldn't worry about Motorola's dire warnings of voiding warranties, either - your statutory rights are unaffected by their posturing, and EU law says you can do what you like to the software on your device and it won't affect your hardware warranty unless your changes can be *proven* to be the cause of any fault.

Thanks, I'll probably end up doing that (wish more devices used fastboot). Will I need to be careful though if I downgrade? e.g. partition table or does CWM take care of that?

I'm not concerned over the warning, I'd just find it annoying.

I believe the partition table is different in 4.4.4, and people have had trouble downgrading. I think it is possible but not as simple as flashing the old gpt.bin - I don't know, I haven't tried it. I seem to recall people having trouble with Falcons not accepting old versions of gpt.bin and this was breaking some install scripts, but you could manually reflash each (old) partition using the 4.4.4 partition table... I don't know if this is an issue on peregrines, YMMV.

I know people have had issues when using fastboot but I'm not sure when it comes to nandroid whether it's an issue (I've never used it on devices where the partition table is an issue).

Sorry guys, opened a thread but did not watch this one.

Well, was asking about:

- I think my moto g lte xt1039 will arrive with kitkat 4.4.2 installed. The site where i ordered it says is "sim free/unlocked", but here's the first newbie question: it means bootloader is already unlocked?
- If it will ask to update to 4.4.4, can i do it without problems with wifi connection?
- Sd card support: which low budget 32gb do you suggest? Thanks
- Root: just watch the link in the OP, here's because i need to know if "unlocked" means bootloader ready for the root.

Thanks

No, it means it'll be sim unlocked to use on any network. It'll still have a locked bootloader, but you can unlock it with a code from Motorola's website.

Should be fine if you OTA update it before mucking about with root etc. You can defer the download if you want to do it over wifi.

I have an old SanDisk one in mine, and my wife is using one of these, both with no problems.

Is it possible to reflash the charging screens to something else like it's possible wiht the boot logo?

When the phone is at 0% and I plug in the charger there's a very bright white screen for several seconds.

I would like to change it to something darker.

Hi all, Just bought the Moto G 4G/LTE from UK Phones 4U which came with 4.4.3 before the OTA updated it to 4.4.4.

Now Base Band shows MSM8926BP_101.90.49.01R, emea_cust

System Version shows shows 21.1.46.peregrine_retgb.retgball.en.GB retgb

Build Number shows KXB21.14-L1.46

This is totally Generic OS no branding at all.

Now i have rooted HTC devices before and even read the rooting guide on here but is there a way of Rooting the Device without unlocking that bootloader, as its a fuse that gets blown when the Bootloader gets unlocked which is why you can not get rid of the device unlocked state even after relocking the device.

I am only after Root at the moment but can live without it for the time being. Other then that its a lovely upgrade from the Desire HD.
