updated my xt1039 yesterday but after a day with the official 5.1 lollipop, my moto g's homescreen display died.
My XT039 EU Retail updated without problems.

Another questions:
1. How to reset battery stats. Lollipop update has messed here.
2. Battery usage details show that WiFi is always on (even if it's not and also background scanning/public network notification are off).
Any remedy?

Edit. Lillipop had to settle itself a little apparently, after 2/3 days it is OK now.
Even new Gmail which sometimes can eat the battery out for some people settled itself (Gmail + outlook accounts)

I need help. I was using KK and everything was working fine. So I installed lolipop xt1039 stock version, the sim and wifi werent working and I got the smd whatever service force close.
So I did the update of the radio firmware and the wifi started working but the sim chip has not.
I tried everything... Wiped cache, data, dalvinik... still nothing makes the sim card work
I even tried going back to KK and reverting the radio firmware but even in KK the sim chip is not being recognized anymore.
I managed to install recovery TWRP-v2.8.3.0, the latest peregrin build that I found in this forum.
Made a full wipe, factory, data, you name it.
After this I installed android 4.4.4 via fastboot
using the steps in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto...kxb21-t2805619

And still no network. Wifi and gps works just fine, but no sim is detected.

The sim is working just fine, I tested it on other phone and it works. I also tested another sim chip that was working in my other phone into my moto g and no luck so far.

Finding no signal (XT1039)

hey,
I hope, I am at the right spot with my question in this thread.
I have a Moto G LTE first gen and it cannot find a cell signal any more. The moto g runs with stock android 4.4.4. and I already tested the sim-card in another smartphone, which runs perfectly fine.
Digitaltrends.com summed up my problem and I already tried the solutions mentioned there (Restart smartphone or turn of plane mode). None of these helped and in some other forum I was asked to factory reset my moto g. That did not help either.

Unfortunately i am not allowed to post links as a newcomer. The site I mentioned earlier is digitaltrends.com and the article-title is "16 glitches and bugs with the Moto G, and how to fix them". This should be enough to find it.

So my question is: Does anyone have an idea how to "repair" my moto g such that it finds signal again.

Thanks for the FAQ @matmutant, it was a nice place to start looking but I haven't found what I needed!

I picked up a Moto G 4G XT1039 from eBay and a friend has been using it for at least a year but it has just started getting lots of errors.
The person I bought it from had already unlocked the bootloader, probably why the price was so good. ;)

It's been running 4.4.4 stock ROM just with SuperSU root access. I figured it was time to update it and this is where the dramas lie.
I've got TWRP-v2.8.7.0 on it from this thread, I went for the encrypted one as I saw no reason to limit the options as he says it works fine without encryption too.

I've tried three different ROM on it but none of them boot, with a bit of extra reading it looked like it might have been because I hadn't updated the modem. So I did that and still no luck. I haven't tried reverting back to the backup since doing the modem, I hope it still works but I guess it might not.

They all flash fine with no errors but then when you reboot the boot animation starts and never stops!
This is with Carbon, Slim and crdroid.

I'm lost at this point, hence this post. Hopefully someone can help me. I must be missing something but can't find it.

PS. @matmutant you might want to update the link to the TWRP thread as currently you're pointing to one which points to another!

I never tried to encrypt my device -as in the early ages it would have bricked it, an then i never gave a shot-, but it should be from where the issue is coming...

I assume you are trying to flash lollipop ROMs? if so, you might want to try to update the gpt.bin to the lollipop one (though you would have been stuck at "Patching system image unconditionally..." instead of bootlooping... )

Another option is much simpler: did you try to force reboot during the first boot(loop) and waited for 10 minutes to see if it finally boots? (try this before the partition table thingy i wrote above)
On the three devices i updated to CM12.1/Exodus (two Falcons and one Condor) i had to force reboot during first boot (after flash) to get it booting correctly

Hmmm yeah, i'll take a look at that later :)

Thanks for the reply @matmutant, I'm confused too.

Just to clear some parts up.
I haven't encrypted it, I just chose the "TWRP-v2.8.7.0 with Encryption Support" so if the phone's user decides to she can.
I've updated the bootloader to 41.1A, then I discovered the modem needed an update so I did that with the files from this thread. The TWRP zip didn't flash so I did it the manual way with mfastboot.exe and that was worked fine.
The 4.4.4 backup is still working since doing both of those updates, I just can't get a 5.1 ROM on it.

I can get neither of them working, it looks like the Carbon I was trying is older so I'll not bother with that now.
I haven't tried cm-12.1-20151024-NIGHTLY-peregrine.zip yet but have downloaded it since I posted.

Perhaps I should just go for the optomised stock ROM or even just the stock ROM now they've fixed the Stagefright bugs. It was those bugs which convinced her that she should let me update her phone and now I can't!

I've given her my old tablet to use and that has Slim on it, I figured if I could get Slim on her phone as well she would have something familiar.

I wouldn't say it's bootlooping, unless I don't understand the term properly. It doesn't keep rebooting itself but never completes booting after wiping everything and flashing. I've let it go for about half an hour to see if I was just being impatient but still the boot animation and nothing else. Holding down the power button and restarting it leads to the same endless boot. Is that the type of force reboot you're talking about?

I saw no difference between the GPT on 4.4.4 and 5.1 on my XT1039 (I compared the binary partition images).
i didn't know for Peregrine (i don't have one, but binaries for 4.3-50.2-5.1 for Falcon ARE different, no idea for 4.4 as i never tried it)

i've heard people that needed (on Falcon at least) to first update to a Stock optimized ROM (like did @lost101 ) before succeeding the flashing of any customs

you are right, the term "bootlooping" is incorrect as it doesn't really loop but simply never complete the first boot... my fault :fingers-crossed:
and yes holding power button was what i was talking about :)

Okay I've trying other things and got errors I could Google!

I tried the XT1039_Retail_EU_51_Untouched_Stagefright_Patched.zip from the thread.
Something happened which made no sense to me, it would pass the MD5 check but not the zip verification. I thought I'd give it a go without that verification to see what would happen. It failed, which I expected but it gave me an error message.

"symlink: no of symlinks failed = 1"

So Googling that I came across this post, the follow up reply indicates that the partition sizes are incorrect but that is for falcon.

I decided to restart recovery so I could get a clean log of the errors.
So I did the zip verification failed part, then went straight back to it to uncheck zip verification and record that error too. Only 'trouble' is it didn't error and has now booted up.

I'll finish setting it up and then let you know what happens, I'm more confused now than I was before and suspect you'll feel the same way!
Thanks for the replies @matmutant. :)

Edit.
Well it booted up, restored the apps via the setup wizard and seems to be working fine. I have had a play store error pop up a couple of times though.
As it isn't a fully patched Stagefright update I'm going to try some custom ROM now to see if they work.
I still don't understand how it worked when I'd tried this already and was just trying to get a log file.

Edit 2.
Well it will flash custom ROM now, I've put Slim on it and it seems to work fine.
I wish I knew what I managed to do differently to make it work, that might save someone else having a similar problem in the future.

Is flashing radio firmware required ?

Hi,
I have installed the stock ROM for peregrine device from Stock Motorola 4G Lollipop ROM Collection page, and everything is working fine. Really great stuff !

Then trying to install the radio firmware, I get the known error "Error executing updater binary in zip". It is said I should TWRP > Wipe > Format/data to fix the Recovery bug, thus erasing internal storage.

As my phone is working fine, and because I would not like to lose some data, is it really *required* to update the radio firmware because of Lollipop version ?

Thank you.

The important error message is *before* that line.
Thank you, the full error is :
Erasing modemst1 ...
assert failed : format("raw", "EMMC", "modemst1", "0", "/modemst1")
E: Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard/0/TWRP_XT1039_Retail_EU_5.1_Radio.zip'
Error flashing zip '/sdcard/0/TWRP_XT1à"9_Retail_EU_5.1_Radio.zip'
Updating partition details...
... done

This error is mentionned in the bug list of that Stock ROM as follow (here):

When flashing, I get the following: "E:Error executing updater binary in zip"
This is a custom recovery bug. Try restarting recovery and flashing again. Alternatively you may need to:
TWRP > Wipe > Format Data > Yes
Note: This will delete anything on internal storage - photos, music, videos etc.

So my question : if the phone works fine without that radio firmware, should I still try other ways to install it (like fastboot commands) for some reasons ?

That means that for some reason formatting of the modemst1 partition failed.

Formatting /data is completely unrelated to erasing modemst1. I don't understand how this can be a custom recovery bug, since the installation is done entirely by the update-binary inside the zip - the recovery only provides the console output here. The standard AOSP update-binary has no support for formatting a partition "raw", so this seems to be some vendor-specific extension in Motorola's update-binary.

So my question : if the phone works fine without that radio firmware, should I still try other ways to install it (like fastboot commands) for some reasons ?
I'd say if everything works then there is no need to do anything. If you find out that you do need to install the radio firmware, and the zip continues to fail, you can use fastboot.

Hello, this may sound silly, but I've had this problem since I started using my MotoG. The images taken with the front camera turns out to be dark, after it is shot. I believe it is a software thing and not hardware because the image is bright in the preview and also in videos captured with the same camera. Since I use front cam only for video calls, it was okay for me. But I'll really like to know whether a fix exists, or is possible. I've tried a dozen camera apps and has flashed uncountable no of roms. The problem persists. Thanks in advance
