Hello all,

As many of you, I am reluctant to give up with our loved last Qwerty survivor. Therefore, this was the moment to boost its battery life.

The selected new battery is BL-54SG from LG G2 (thanks to @no3id)

The process is very simple: disassemble the stock battery to take out the battery controller PCB and solder it to the bare LG battery.

Charging to 100% OK.

Perfect length and height, only a bit thicker (you can see the bulging cover in the last picture)

Still testing!! Do it at your own risk!!

Thanks for sharing reinoso!

It looks like you cut the upper tabs that hold the stock battery down, is that true?

Does your battery level indicator still work with this retrofitted battery?

Did you consider somehow sanding the back case to try to avoid some of that bulging?

Let us know how it goes once you field test it a bit!

How's your test? Do you have some good news for us? :)

Thanks for sharing reinoso!

Yes, it is the only damage you have to make to the stock frame.

Does your battery level indicator still work with this retrofitted battery?

Yes, perfectly

Did you consider somehow sanding the back case to try to avoid some of that bulging?

Not enough plastic thickness to get any effect.

Let us know how it goes once you field test it a bit!

It runs perfect, battery life improved at least 40%.

Man, you've done a great job!
One more question, for your conversion you've used some random "genuine replacement" battery from ebay for $15? I mean, any 2610MAH BL-54SG will do?

As it's not easy to buy a genuine LG BL-54SG here, I've decided to give LG BL-59JH a try.

It's 2460mAh, which still seems like a good upgrade and I could easily pick it up in a store on my way from work to home yesterday.
It's not so wide as BL-54SG, so it can be installed without any modification to the battery support frame.
My back cover seems to hold rather fine even with NFC antenna back in place, but there's indeed a bulge.
What's important for me is that the phone still fits to Motorola's original car holder without issues.

Hi

Thanks for your sharing! My Photon Q battery has been bad for already half a year. It bulged a little bit and the battery service life was getting less every day.

So I bought a BL-54SG as well :) 12€, so about 13 USD here in Germany. Hope, it's a genuine one. Disassembled both batteries, soldered the PQ-battery-controller to the bare LG battery and done :) Was slightly difficult because the positive pole of the LG battery was eating the heat of my soldering station... But now it's working :)
Closing the battery door was really hard. At first it didn't clamp but now it looks like it stays closed.
I have the same "marks" on the backside, but before my phone's backside was'nt flat because of the bulging old battery, now it's because of extended capacity. Something I can live with!

So thank you for your advice! I'll now test this "mod" as well :)

//EDIT: NFC seems to be broken now, though... :(
//EDIT2: OK, working again :) peeled this black stuf from the old battery and put it behind the NFC antenna on the new one :)

As the glue holding the previously flat (now bulged) top part of the back cover started to loosen up, I've decided to try an alternative to better accommodate the thicker battery.

This my first try on an 'old gloves leather back' hack.
The soft leather is held by the thin 3M double sided adhesive tape for touchscreen/lcd repairs.
To my surprise, it's still holding fine after a few days of use.

Well that sucked. I had a bad battery, bought a new one. Saw this thread, decided I'll get an LG and try the mod with the old battery.
New battery arrived, aaaaand snapped the PCB from the old one trying to get it off :/
What would happen if I wired the battery up just through the +/- pins? Without the two middle ones?
What are the middle pins for?

EDIT::
Goddamnit, Droid4 post linked to here and without looking properly they looked the same.

You need the battery controller ic. You can't use the bare battery.

Alternatives

also working on my motorola droid 4! :)

but the orignal cover doesn't fit.
I'm thinking of upgrading my Droid 4 battery. However I don't want to give up wireless charging. I have already troubles to fit Qi receiver in. So I need new back cover (can't find any) or thin battery and as much mAh as possible. Here are couple alternatives:

Comparison original battery for Droid 4/Photon Q 4G:
  • EB-41: 2.75 x 1.89 x 0.151'' 1785 mAh (69.85 x 48.00 x 3,835 mm)
Alternatives:
  • BL-54SG: 2.68 x 1.90 x 0.217 2610mAH (LG, 68.05 x 48.25 x 5.50mm)
  • BL-54SH: 2.67 x 1.90 x 0.221 2540mAh (LG, 67.90 x 48.30 x 5.60 mm)
  • BL-59JH: 2.56 x 1.73 x 0.23 2460mAh (LG, 65.02 x 43.94 x 5.84 mm)
  • EB-L1G6LLUCSTD: 2.48 x 1.99 x 0.213 2100mAh (Galaxy S3, 63 x 50.5 x 5.4 mm)
  • EB-B500BEBECWW: 2.72 x 2.01 x 0.170 1900mAh (Galaxy S4 mini, 69.10 x 51.00 x 4.32 mm)
  • TLi019B2: 1900mAh (Alcatel One touch, 62.18 x 55.81 x 4.85 mm)
* RED color means "maybe" too big size

EDIT: New founds:
  • EB615268VU: 2.66 x 2.04 x 0.240 2500mAh (Galaxy Note, 67.50 x 51.90 x 6.10)
  • BV-5QW: 2.64 x 2.02 x 0.215 2420mAh (Nokia, 66.96 x 51.28 x 5.46 mm)
  • EB-L1M1NL: 2.60 x 1.97 x 0.197 2300mAh (ATIV S, 66 x 50 x 5mm)
  • EB535163LU: 2.6 x 1.9 x 0.2 2100mAh (I9080, 66.04 x 48.26 x 5.08 mm)
  • B0PA2100: 2.50 x 2.00 x 0,203 2100mAh (Desire 310, 63.54 x 50.55 x 5.15mm)
  • EB-BG357BBE: 2.72 x 2.00 x 0.165 1900mAh (G357, 69.05 x 50.9 x 4.2mm)

Too bad that I can't find any 2.7 x 1.9 x 0.16 batteries with 2000-2200mAh. I think that should be possible. Only 100mAh upgrade to 1900mAh is maybe too little.

LG BL-T5 2100mAh
Length: 2.66"
Width: 1.78"
Height: 0.18"
I think if you remove nfc, then this battery will stand in our phone as a native)
But transplant controller will still have to do.

    We can do more.

This is the LG BL-53YH (3000mAh) meant for the LG G3

    official-lg-g3-standard-battery-p51001-450.jpg

It doesn't fit as is in the PQ frame, but it's just barely larger

    sn2ano.jpg

    281fwr6.jpg

it's 5mm thick x 50.7mm wide x 72,5mm tall (once the the LG circuitry is removed).

In short you need to remove a couple of mm from the PQ frame to make it "comfortable", then you have to use the less space as possible when the Moto charge regulator is soldered in place.

Everything else is the same to what already discussed above for the 2600mAh mod

The photo is taken on a guinea pig PQ, it is just a mobo and a frame, but it's enough to demonstrate that the mod is possible (and also relatively easy)

Almost 2x the original capacity (!!!) w/o any space taken externally, and w/o any "gold battery" like fantasy :D)

For the record there is an alternative battery with the same size, which is the BL-51YH (for LG G4).

It has a different pinout, which is irrelevant for our purposes

Both of them are really easy to find for a cheap price, usually you can find them for 10€ or so, but I paid mine 1€ + shipment.

If you're really insatiable and you want to live with a pregnant phone, there are also a lot of choices of double capacity (and double thickness) batteries meant for either the LG G3 or G4.

    Edit:

Pay attention to the tickness... the BL-53YH (and BL-51YH) are just 5mm thick, while the BL-54SG is 5.7 (both are actual measurements, taken with a caliper, not the specs values).

In short you will have less bulging problems with the 3000 mAh mod rather than the 2600mAh one.

0.7 mm is an huge difference when talking about such tolerances and small spaces.
