Thank you hi2u2 for your clarification. Since my Aria was originally rooted using shad0wf0xs' Ubuntu Live CD method it looks like I need to download and install the current version (3.32) of unrevoked before starting this whole process. Since I have HTC Sync 2.0.38 installed, do I need to install any other drivers (hboot or aria drivers pack) for unrevoked to see my phone to install the recovery image?
You can use the LiveCD if you want. Basically once you have installed the RUU (must be from Windows), you can run Unrevoked from the LiveCD like you did before. Go back and repeat the same steps you followed when you originally rooted the phone, with one change. Once you boot into the LiveCD, download the new .img file, and set Unrevoked to use the img file you just downloaded before connecting your phone to the computer.

Installed the recovery image (from first post) using revoked and everything worked...

It's nice to be able to charge my phone now with it turned off (as opposed to leaving it on).

thanks :)

Thank you hi2u2 for your clarification. Since my phone was originally rooted using shad0wf0xs' Ubuntu Live CD method, do I need to install the hboot driver before running unrevoked 3.32 so it will see my phone to install the recovery image?

Also, I just launched the unrevoked package installer as a test and saw "Waiting for device. Plug phone in now and enable USB debugging. MAKE SURE HTC SYNC IS NOT INSTALLED." It looks like I need to uninstall HTC Sync before running unrevoked.
You need HBOOT drivers installed to use Unrevoked with Windows. Follow the standard directions to install them.

And yes, you need to uninstall HTC Sync before using Unrevoked. However make sure you do not uninstall the HTC drivers (these are separate from the HBOOT drivers -- you need both).

If you don't have the proper drivers installed when you use Unrevoked, you won't cause any harm to the phone -- it will simply not be successful in rooting the phone or replacing the recovery image.

Thank You drumist, this fills in the details I was missing. I plan to proceed as soon as my phone is fully charged. I will report back once the process is completed.

Thanks to everyone who helped me get this done. I'm good to go as well.

It occurs to me that if I want to unroot the phone and remove clockworkmod recovery, all I have to do is run the 2.1 RUU again. Is there any other use for unrevoked going forward aside from rooting the phone initially?

Correct, unrevoked is only used to root the phone, and re-root if you happened to run the 2.1 RUU again. You can delete it if you want.

Few hiccups I encountered with the steps. When I ran the 2.1 RUU it started once and then complained that it failed and couldn't communicate with my phone midway through. I almost had a heart attack when I unplugged the USB cable to see what happened. It would show HBOOT with nothing on it. I plugged back in the cable and reran RUU and this time it worked. Whew.

Then when I was at trying to restore my nandroid backup I was getting some MD5 checksum errors. I guess I was not supposed to rename my backup files with spaces. Renaming it back resolved my mistake. Whew again.

I am trying to unroot from this offmode charging image, but the phone isn't recognized by RUU...drivers are in place.

Any ideas?
You need to uninstall Unrevoked's HBOOT drivers if you are trying to unroot the phone as they will interfere with the process. Personally when I've done an un-root I just do it on a different computer that never had any extra drivers installed.

So I "re-root" with the original Unrevoked image and then unroot?

No... HBOOT and recovery are two separate things. The recovery has nothing to do with the RUU install process at all. You should be able to install from RUU even if you had no recovery image on the phone. I'm saying the problem you are experiencing is totally unrelated to the fact that you have the Clockwork recovery from this thread installed.

I never could get the RUU exe to work. I ended up using the zip out of the RUU (renamed to LIBEIMG.ZIP) on a gold card.
Thanks Gene.
I've unrooted using RUU before, but now I'm having problems - I attributed it to the recovery image, but evidently the two are unrelated.

I'm not familiar with using a gold card, but I'll search for information on it.

Thanks again,
Dan

I've done it before and had no problem. But I knew going in that you have to have the correct drivers installed for it to work, so I sidestepped the issue by using a completely different computer that has never had any Android software/drivers installed on it, then installed HTC Sync, then ran the RUU and it worked first time without any problem. You must have USB debugging enabled on the phone -- or I believe you can just start the process with your phone at the HBOOT menu. I also believe that you must uninstall the HBOOT drivers that Unrevoked uses if you have them installed.
