You only need to backup vendor if you are going between different versions of Android, or if you are using Layers or Viper4Android and have manually altered the vendor partition. When making a backup on the nexus 9, do I need to tick the vendor box as well? When I backup just the boot, system and data and try to restore, I don't even get the boot animation. It just hangs. Please, ends this for me.

reboot system hangs. will not reboot my system. just lock up twrp.. if i hold the power buttom , that works.. is this a known issue.. i try reflashing twrp.. still same issue..
Same stuff. System, data, boot.New to Nexus but not Twrp. I have use Twrp for some time on my ONO to back up I use Boot, System and Data. I have not flashed Twrp yet just wondered what the eqwuivalant was on the nexus? Or what I need to back up to restore from a different ROM.
What exact commands did you use?OK I took the plunnge and unlocked my Nexus. Went into fast boot and flashed recvery twrp recovery .img. Reboot recovery and ended up with stock recovery. Tried again but no joy.
This was on stock from no root. I did read that some ROMs load stock recovery on first boot. Any suggestions where I went wrong?

Thanks for the replies. This was the process I used:-Boot directly to recovery after flash. Do not boot system first
Yes.What exact commands did you use?
fastboot flash recovery twrprecovery.img
Or whatever you named it
Yes, select boot recovery in fastboot screen. Thanks for the replies. This was the process I used:-
Unlocked boot loader.
booted tablet and and had working stock ROM
Ticked OEM unlocking and USB debugging.
Powered down.
Went into fast boot on tablet.
Opened a command prompt.(on Mac)
CD to folder were ADB, Fastboot and recovery image are saved.
Typed command fastboot flash recovery recovery.img ( I had renamed image to recovery)
Process completed.
I then booted tablet (this may be were I went wrong)
Used command ADB reboot recovery
No tarp.
How do I boot straight into recovery before I boot the system? Do I select recovery on the fast boot screen on the tablet and press the power button.

Yes.
Go through the process again. Once it shows completed, hit the volume down key on the tablet until you get to recovery, then press power. If recovery isn't down, go down to bootloader, then press power. Then go down to recovery and press power. Thanks for the replies. This was the process I used:-

Yes.
Restoring an old vendor causes bootloop anyways. No need to ever do it. Once you update it, you never want to go backwards. How come TWRP will backup Vedor but fails to restore? Version 2.8.7.1
