Hi, is using TWRP a good option to root a GT-I9195 LTE 4G international? I keep on reading posts about people having issues they wish to root the phone the safest way as I'm a beginner.

How does the reliability compare to something like CF-auto root?

CF-auto root is outdated, and may or may not be stable with the most recent versions of some apps that require root.

Generally, in order to root, you need a custom recovery, of which TWRP is the most popular and versatile. This is true whether you want to root a stock rom or custom rom. My grandma has an I9195, and I wouldn't've developed TWRP for it, nor used it to root lineage-16.0 on her phone, if I had any doubts that she could still reliably keep in touch with the rest of my family. :)

Thank you, very good of you to reply, that has put my mind at rest, I've been out the rooting game for years and have forgotten everything. I had forgotten what fun it is. my reason for Rooting, is to create a phone with all the distracting application stripped out, I would go for a simple phone but I need WhatsApp and messenger to stay in touch with my mum. Thank you for your great work.

hi, through Odin I've just launched the AP file and the phone appears to be stuck in downloading and it says do not turn off target. All software versions are correct.

I did turn off auto Reboot and auto time. I understand that I have to boot straight into recovery using volume up, home and power button and install supersu, rather than let the phone boot normally.
incidentally Odin does say pass with a pale green background. Thank you.

It's all fine now thanks, just restarted it cheers

In the future, don't check off anything in Odin, just import the file and flash it. Let Odin do the rest. ;)

Hi, thanks, I have had some interesting fun and games with the whole process.

Software used:

Odin3 v3.13.3

twrp-3.3.1-0-serranoltexx.img.tar for GT-I9595 LTE

SR5-SuperSU-v2.82-SR5-20171001224502.zip

lineage-17.1-20200203-UNOFFICIAL-serranoltexx

open_gapps-arm-10.0-pico-20200212.zip

This is what happened.

Flashed twrp successfully in Odin, phone did not reboot but then again I had turned reboot off some reason, thanks for saying leave it alone.

I had heard that it was a good idea to go straight into twrp recovery on first boot or the root might be reversed.

Successfully entered recovery, I installed Super SU-v 2.82 and it all seemed to go okay.

I rebooted my phone and it loaded touch wiz as normal. I downloaded root check and it said there were No root.

I entered recovery again I did a backup got a large file about 2.5 gig. I copy the file onto my computer.

I entered recovery again and I installed lineage 17.1 it all seemed to work successfully.

The phone started booting into lineage, it was taking a while said it was updating apps then the phone turned off and went into twrp by itself. When I started the phone it would get halfway into loaning lineage and then would reboot to recovery.

I reinstalled lineage and wiped the cashe and then it booted up beautifully and is working well.

I then installed G apps I use the wrong version to start with (64 bit) but that all installed well.

Everything is working great and I'm very happy but I installed Titania backup and I found that I still don't have root.

I did try to install Supers SU again but it said there was some sort of error.

I'm a bit confused, because how can it not be rooted if I've installed the new operating system.:silly:

A lot of mistakes.
1. Never use the newest Odin Version for an 7 years old Phone.
Use Odin 3.07 or 3.09
2. Important that you must unckeck Autoreboot and freset on Odin. After flashing you must reboot directly in the Recovery TWRP, if not it will by reboot into system install the Samsung Stock Recovery.
3. In the moment LOS 17 is not Root able. See the notications from arco68.

Thanks for what you said, by chance I did your advice about booting straight into twrp . Iinstalled supersu, the phone booted into touch wiz and found that I didn't have root I understand I should have used majic(forgot spelling).

I want to install a modern ROM that allows me root access, what you recommend?

I want a secure modern version of android but I wish to uninstall many of the apps I find distracting, to create a smart dumb phone. I also love the older phones as I feel they are looking after the planet. And they are to useless addictive to use, I have bad RSI from computer games

What about LOS16, still maintained by arco?

SU is already integrated, all you need to do is enable it in developer settings.

Thanks, I did that and Lineage 16 is absolutely amazing, a dream come true.

The last time I flashed a phone ROM was an HTC wildfire buzz about a years ago, It's been fun catching up with knowledge.

I am confused about the SU thing, I haven't noticed the SU is integrated anywhere in lineage 16.
I do have some questions about magisk, Is there a version which is best for the Samsung S4 mini and what is the purpose of magisk uninstaller, what is magiskSU, what is magisk manager for.

@Anteries
Try LOS 16 with Opengapps nano vor piko Version
After flashing the ROM and setup of them reboot into Recovery and install Magisk for Root .
thank you, Lineage OS 16 absolutely fantastic, quick question is there a particular version of magisk that is best for this phone.also I hear reference to magiskS U, is that something different?

I use magisk 19.2 because newer version are detect by my banking apps and magisk hide doesn't work against those apps So I stick with 19.2
But you can use latest
Magisk manager app is like superSu app which manage root permission to allow or deny what makes magisk different from SuperSu is module support and build-in hide root support also super su is not maintain anymore By flashing magisk uninstaller remove magisk from your device in case you want to unroot your phone

Hallo, I´m afraid I arrived at a point where I could need some help with flashing TWRP and I think I should deliver some facts first!?
> It´s my first flash.
> Device: Samsung Galaxy S4 mini, GT-l9195l, Android version 4.4.4, Developer options active, USB debugging active
> Laptop: WIN10 with adb fastboot active, Odin latest version, TWRP serranoltexx from this thread

Problem: everything seems to work flawlessly.
> Can boot into download mode.
> Device is being recognized by WIN10 and Odin.
> Odin displays zero problems (unfortunately can´t show a screenshot, since I´m new).
But:
> As soon as the device reboots and the screen gets black I simultaneously press Power, Home, Volume up until the boot screen appears.
> Either the device reboots into download mode or Android stock ROM starts.

I´m not sure what is happening. Am I too slow/fast/old...?

I'm sorry to tell you but none of the 3 variants supported in this thread are yours, if you indeed have an GT-I9195I, which is not serranoltexx but serranoveltexx. It uses a completely different chipset (msm8916 versus msm8930 for the ones here). I have no idea if TWRP 3.3.1-0 is available for it.

Ah, okay, thank you for this information!!! Now it´s understandable why it doesn´t work! I´m gonna look after it at TWRP.

Team Win Recovery Project 3.x, or twrp3 for short, is a custom recovery built with ease of use and customization in mind. Its a fully touch driven user interface no more volume rocker or power buttons to mash. The GUI is also fully XML driven and completely theme-able. You can change just about every aspect of the look and feel.

    Code:
    * [B][U]Your warranty is now void.[/U][/B]
    * I am not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
    * thermonuclear war, or your getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
    * do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
    * before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
    * you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.

How to flash TWRP with Odin
    1. If your phone is turned on normally, turn on Advanced reboot in Developer options and select "Download" from the Restart menu. Alternatively, power it off and press the Power, Volume Down, and Home buttons simultaneously. When the blue screen appears, release all 3 buttons and press Volume Up.
    2. In Odin, import the appropriate twrp.tar file for your variant with the "AP" and press the "Start" button.
    3. Pull the battery as soon as your phone vibrates.
    4. You can then boot directly into TWRP by pressing the Power, Volume Up, and Home buttons simultaneously. Release all three buttons as soon as you see the boot screen ("Samsung Galaxy S4 mini").

How to flash TWRP within a previous version of TWRP
    1. If your phone is turned on normally, turn on Advanced reboot in Developer options and select "Recovery" from the Restart menu. Alternatively, power it off and press the Power, Volume Up, and Home buttons simultaneously. Release all 3 buttons when the boot screen appears ("Samsung Galaxy S4 mini").
    2. In TWRP, tap "Install" then "Install Image".
    3. Navigate in the folder structure to the location of the appropriate twrp.img file for your variant and tap it.
    4. Select the "Recovery" radio button.
    5. Move the slider to the right to flash the TWRP image.
    6. Tap "Reboot System" or, alternatively, tap the back arrow 3 times to return to the main menu, then tap "Reboot" and "Recovery" to reboot into the TWRP image you have just flashed.

Thanks for the updated TWRP, only just got around to flashing it, as sick in bed LOL!

I just ran a backup but got a couple of error messages

    1st backup had two errors
    "error installing zip file '@/cache/recovery/block.map"
    and
"unable to locate '/preload' partition for backup calculation"

    2nd try
the first error didn't appear but still had
"unable to locate '/preload' partition for backup calculation"

Doesn't that mean I won't be able to restore?
Do we even have a preload partition on this phone? Anyone know?

I used the exact same partition map as in the serrano-common lineage repo, which has no preload partition listed. Have you tried restoring it yet?

Edit: nvm, I found the problem. I'll post new builds in the next couple of days.

I had the same issues with my SD ;)

I remember a similar problem with my TWRP build for the big S4, which I fixed by removing the following line from the BoardConfig.mk file:
