Sorry for you.
Which mods do you have installed?
SU? Which? Original, Systemless or Magisk?
Xposed? Which Version? Developer?

At first delete all backups in TWRP/backups (internal and external) or backup them to a harddisk/PC. Try to take a new backup, if it fails, go in TWRP to Advance and "Copy log", it will be copied to external sd card under twrp/recovery.log or twrp/backups/recovery.log, post it. Maybe something is wrong with you system/data files.
_______________
Had to restore a system backup, all went good, only restored "system". :)
Magisk, Magisk SU and unofficial magisk xposed 86.4 by topjohnwu

I am still using the one I shared before. It takes back up of all system and data. I did backup of system files at first go (external memory) and reboot in to recovery and backed up data in to internal memory. All works file. I moved data backup to external memory using file explorer.

Sure, all of you can have it. At first i want to test things (backups takes some time) and post about it, to show it could be done.
It's not bug free, like you see above, but bug less. Backup to external is almost a problem errors appears randomly and i don't know where to look at, where is the exact problem. But you can backup to internal and move it to external. I've not tested how restore goes.

Image at evening.
@paulobrien if you don't have enough time to develop for the P9, leave it and i do my very best with your good work so far.

Flash via fastboot, but first remove /data/media/0/TWRP/.twrps only to be sure. You have to set settings in twrp again. On first boot allow system to be read/write.
Only backup to internal storage works for me so far without problem.
I tried to flash your Recovery but it doesn't work...

Any ideas ?

Thanks.

Hey, little question: I see that this post is for P9 Eva-L19, but my phone is Eva-L09. Does twrp also work for this phone? I'm kinda reluctant to try, since my other phone got bricked (without me knowing it).

I don't know if you've tried it yet, but after you flash it (if done by fastboot), reboot to recovery using fastboot. I heard that the p7, 8 and 9 try to dismiss a custom recovery program if you don't reboot to it right after flashing it.

Unfortunately I encounter an issue when trying to backup the data partition of my EVA-L09 to sdcard.

createTarFork() process ended with ERROR: 255

The TWRP Log shows the following:
Code:

Always backup to internal and copy to external if needed, backup to sdcard "always" give that error. Have you read the hole thread?

Ok, so I've been using your TWRP for a while with no major issues. Backup Boot & System first, then separately backup Data, all to internal memory. Then copy it to my external SD Card

Having come from HTC's where there was only ever those 3 partitions that you needed to backup (Cache was never needed IMO) I've noticed with the P9, there are also other partitions ... 3rdmodem, Cust & OEMinfo. OEMinfo I'm aware of, but the other 2...?

Should these also be backed up (and restored if necessary)?

The reason I ask is I decided to do a wipe and reflash from B136 onwards, but restoring the data partition so all my apps etc would still be there. Well it restored the apps....But not their data!??? Ended up having to restore my Titanium Backup.

Anyone else had similar? Is their data held on one of the other partitions or is this a glitch with TWRP?

P9 Plus : I cannot boot to TWRP . I tried many times, even if it says that both the stock recovery and TWRP are installed (SRK Tool) I cannot shut it down completely from fastboot mode and it keeps going back to stock recovery.
