Success (restoring stock recovery)
The solution (at least for me) was incredibly simple and sitting right under my nose. Turns out a copy of recovery.img was located in sdcard/recovery. I wasn't sure if it was valid after previously flashing TWRP, but after reading and pursuing various options I pulled the trigger with flashify, rebooted and verified the stock recovery was again usable. Wohoo! I can now proceed with downgrading and reflashing TWRP. Cpasjuste was kind enough to provide a modified 13.4.5.2 image (note different kernel) that is compatible with TWRP; have to decide whether to go with that, Nexus or CM11. Decisions, decisions....sure is nice to have a choice!
If you find yourself in a different situation with a non-working recovery be prepared to do some reading. Lots of helpful info in these forums. Might want to start here. It's not a solution but does show how some of the components fit together.
