Off the top of my head I will say yes because I have never heard of anyone who kept booting back into recovery. So I would have the firmware at hand because I always download first. While holding volume up and volume down plug usb c into pc and tabler. While its trying to reboot.

You can give more details to what you did. Did you unlock bootloader? these types of things. Worst case you have to flash stock firmware and you don't break your brand new 1000 dollar tablet for good. data can always be redownloaded.

You dont even say if twrp works or sees your system or anything

i was already rooted via magisk, then i went ahead and flashed the twrp.tar file to it via the AP slot on odin while in download mode. really hoping i can recover, again all i can do is boot into recvovery or download mode

Yes I know a miracle fix without a factory reset is all anyone wants. When they pray to god at night thats it cure for cancer not so much.

So because you have still left no details im going to play the assuming game. You rooted by patching the AP file Right?

That means it was still encrypted when you flash twrp you also have to flash the kernel and format the data. Because the tablets still encrypted. You said you just flash twrp. My thought is it has be done the correct way if you add twrp you had to also flash kernel and format data.

Just to beat you to I dont know a fix. I dont think there is one you will have to flash stock firmware and start over. You can try telegram and see what the developer says but I dont know

* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.

Has anyone successfully upgraded to the Android 13 firmware without a factory reset?

I have an S8 and an S8 Ultra. The S8 has essentially become my primary computer as I use it for everything. I use the S8 Ultra as a toy and for testing. These devices were successfully rooted with TWRP recovery on the Android 12 firmware (data partition unencrypted).

The S8 Ultra was my test victim. I successfully got Android 13 running rooted with TWRP. However, my data partition got wiped. I do have a TWRP backup so hopefully I will be able to restore that. Oh well, I enjoy tinkering with my electronics so it's not a big deal.

But there would be quite a bit of pain if I had to do the same thing with the S8.

I usually have a lot of success with this stuff but evidently I messed something up. Please let me know if you have any ideas about what I did wrong. Here are the basic steps that I took:

1) Flashed BL, AP, and HOME_CSC for the new firmware. The AP partition was pre-patched with Magisk.
2) I then flashed TWRP along with the VB meta disabler.
3) I booted into TWRP and ran the multidisabler script.
3) At this point I was in a boot loop, so I wiped the meta partition as is recommended.
4) Tablet booted fine, but evidently got wiped because it was a brand new setup screen.

Hopefully I will be able to restore that TWRP backup of the unencrypted data partition. I will let you guys know how that works out.

I would also kindly ask how to update to the latest to the latest rom without losing TWRP and without a full wipe.

The first steps are clear:
- download the new rom with Freya
- patch AP with Magisk on the Tab S8 ultra
- flash patched AP, BL and home-csc with Odin
.... And then the next steps are a little bit vague....

Any help and hint is very welcome. :)

Note: steps 2-6 are important, missing any will lose your data.

1. Load all files to their respective slots in odin, pick HOME_CSC instead of CSC.
2. Uncheck auto reboot in Odin and hit start.
3. Reboot to download if possible from odin options (not working on all devices), or using buttons combo.
4. Keep auto reboot unchecked, Flash TWRP in AP slot and vbmeta_disabled.tar in USERDATA
5. Hold volume down and power until the screen goes black then immediately switch to holding volume up and power to reboot into TWRP.
6. Disable encryption:
- Go to Advanced > Terminal, type: multidisabler.
You will see " - Finished." When it is done.
7. flash custom kernel and magisk then reboot to system (optional).

Thank you very much for the fast and detailed answer!
What version of magisk do you plan to use. I used canary 2508 because 2510 on one ui 5.0 caused all kinds of problems. 2508 work fine on 5.0. Well not so on 5.1 whatever changes hes making its not stable lol. Magisk keeps uninstalling the apk and lsposed wont work and all types of crazy **** I have never seen im trying to figure it out right now.

Hu, I am not completely sure for now.
Magisk 25.2 runs fine without issues on the Galaxy Tab S8 ultra with the BVL2-ROM from February.
I know that for the S23 ultra there is a modification in Magisk needed and therefore one must use a canary version for patching AP. I do not thought that this is also needed for the Tab S8 ultra.

I will read a little bit in the Magisk threads for sure and get maybe some information.

What do you mean? I extract the kernel from my last firmware not the one annexed here in OP?
No, use my kernel but same version as stock

Just installed the TWRP recovery and magisk on my Tab S8 Wifi model (SM-X700) and everything seems great so far.

At first I didn't know a TWRP for Tab S8 existed, so I rooted it through the Odin patch method (following the instructions from the Root-Guide-post on the How-to-Guide section), but with that method you have to find, download, patch and reinstall the firmware (which btw is still the stock rom although it is rooted) and still stay on the stock recovery which is quite a drawback.
The custom recovery is for me of crucial importance, it has saved me many times from a lot of trouble in the past by helping me to retrieve important data from my bricked devices as well as to unbrick them.

I'd like to add that I'm craving for a custom rom for the Galaxy Tab S8. So far I haven't found any. I would gladly trade those totally unnecessary Dex or S-Pen gimmicks for unrestricted android/data access, functionality of memory changer apps and compatibility with good older apps. Android 12 and 13 seem very primitive iOS-like systems and becoming worse. I am using Android 9 on other devices and it seems actually a far better option compared to those restricted bs ''modern'' devices they are trying to push nowadays. So I really hope someone would care to bring custom roms for these devices, no matter if One UI based, Lineage OS based or anything else. I wouldn't mind to pay for stable custom roms.

That aside I am very excited to have found this method which installs in a few steps the TWRP custom recovery, offers root access and does not require a new firmware installation or other struggles. Kudos to the dev!

Note1: You need a custom permissive kernel to boot with R/W vendor.
Note2: If you got bootloop on Samsung logo, reboot to TWRP and wipe metadata from Advanced Wipe section

Hello @afaneh92 . I happen to own a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 (Model X700, CSC: CHN) device. And, I forked your GitHub repository, applied some tweaks to the touch screen parameters, and tested the tweaks on my device. I believe that I have fixed the touch screen problem, at least for my device. My device's TWRP is fully working now. I used its touch screen to run the multidisabler, to flash the custom kernel, and to flash Magisk without any problems. Thank you for your brilliant works! And, I am happy to share with you and the community both the source code and binaries. I will attach the GitHub link of my release below. (Attachment 1/2) I will also attach the same binary here for the communities' convenience. (Attachment 2/2)
