Thanks

How small do you need it? I built a 1Gb image: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=294180

If you need a smaller one then let my know your system partition size in bytes.

I tried this one and no luck, how ever when I ran simg2img and tried the resulting ext4 image with dd command it was only 1 record missing before it said out of space.
Not sure how to get the exact partition size in bites

here's out-put of df command from the device in recovery
Code:
~ # df
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
tmpfs 231252 152 231100 0% /dev
tmpfs 231252 20 231232 0% /tmp
/dev/block/mmcblk0p24
                        108784 112 106380 0% /cache
/dev/block/mmcblk0p25
                       2070560 1051844 985948 52% /data
/dev/block/mmcblk0p25
                       2070560 1051844 985948 52% /sdcard
/dev/block/mmcblk0p23
                        991896 1272 974240 0% /system
~ #

but from twrp it says the system partition is 968MB
don't know if that helps
a quick search leads to this...
Code:
968 MB = 968000000 Bytes (in decimal)
968 MB = 1015021568 Bytes (in binary)
And I think if I had an image to fit that I'd be good to go

Tomorrow I shall make you an image of 1015021568 bytes. There will be little free space, not sure if enough for GApps (I do not use them myself).

Flash from bootloader using fastboot or install from TWRP using "image mode" rather than simg2img and dd.

File available at the same address (I compressed it to xz so please decompress first). Space used is 800Mb so should be space for GApps, etc. Please confirm if it works.

Some progress

I flashed it and it booted to the android boot animation and is taking FOREVER to boot up.
I do have adb and adblogcat going, so maybe It will finish booting...
It's telling me LOADS of stuff about dex2oat so I think it's just installing all the apps and stuff.
i did a clean flash wiped data dalvic and system and cache then flashed from fastboot.
I'm going to let it fester around on logcat and keep going till it either boots completed or panics and dies.
Will keep you posted.
FYI it's been booting for a little over 20 minutes now

Indeed, after wiping cache and dalvic it can take a while to rebuild them. You may need to wipe data too if it was encrypted. Animation is a good sign :)

Device is low ram

Yes and it only has 512mb ram
So it takes for ever....
I'm going to leave it plugged in and see how it is when I get home.
Its got a working logcat so I'm not ready to scrap it yet.

Try the build.prop from your stock ROM - don't forget to chmod it correctly if you do.
What vendor version? Have you tried reflashing that? Do you have a link to your stock ROM?

In case your device has a problem with deodexd image, have uploaded a version that is not. Note that it takes up 920Mb system space but should boot quicker.

If its completed boot in say 8 hours when I get home ill let it be.
If not ill try the odexed version u mentioned.
And ill merge the build.prop from stock with the build.prop from gsi.
Chmod 0644 if I remember correctly.
And see if it works.
I'm using the stock vendor.img from the device.
Its oreo...8.1.0
I could upload it somewhere for comparison if u like.
Its some alps build on a Chinese phone by a company called soho phones or something.
Won't be back at the pc till after midnight central time

Only if nothing else works as it may need some tweaks going from Oreo to Pie

Correct

Do you have the model and link to a specs page?

Ah, 6 hours behind. I shall be asleep then and on a flight after that so my replies may be delayed.

Good luck.

How can I go back to stock Android 8.1 Go after flashing this rom?
Or, where do I get the Stock/Vendor rom if I ever change my mind after flashing this?

But, aren't those MIUI ROM? I wanted the stock Android Go ROM.

The site is misleading. The stock ROM for the phone is Android G0 8.1 (with a couple of Xiaomi apps). There is no MIUI ROM available for this model.

Hey man thanks for your help.
I accidentally killed it trying to flash the system through flash tool.
Then only got recovery of fastboot.
So tried flashing the backup I had made of stock before any mods. Through spflashtool.
Well I accidentally forgot to Not include the lk and lk2 partitions. But did uncheck the recovery partition so that I'd keep the twrp.
Duh....
Should either uncheck lk and lk2 or check all.
Because now I got a piece of plastic with twrp on it and a locked bootloader.
With no way to boot into android and allow oem unlocking. Fastboot refuses to unlock.
Can't get into twrp fully.
Screen locks and hangs at splash but I have adb root shell so I can try some things. But I have no idea how to allow oem unlock from recovery.
Or from fastboot.
And system doesn't even try to boot.
So unless anyone knows where I can modify a file or database through adb and twrp to return unlockable to fastboot.... The only other thing would be to her edit the lk lk2 or preloader or something to always return unlocked bootloader and flash it through spflashtool....
Too much work for a pos free fone

    Instructions

NOTE: Do not flash the vendor file from the OP, that causes bootloops on my device.

This is what I did - now happily running AOSP 9:
    - Restore stock firmware (http://en.miui.com/download-365.html)
    - Reboot then perform system update to get latest release
    - Reboot to bootloader (fastboot mode)
    - Download the GSI image from the OP
    - fastboot flash system system-test-20190415-arm-a.img
    - Boot to TWRP recovery
    - Mount system partition
    - Replace /system/build.prop with one from OP
    - Reboot

Additionally, if you want to disable encryption:
    - Format data partition (You will loose all of your data!)
    - Download vendor image file from OP
    - Extract default.prop and fstab.qcom
    - Mount vendor partition
    - Replace extracted files to phone

I have attached the files that need to be replaced to this post

The ROM from the original post is no longer available. If anyone is interested then I can make an updated GSI available.
