Can you tell us if there is a new modem or bootloader in the update please?

I will check after work as I don't have the N6 on me. From memory it was only 25MB or something and the radio ended with *45.

The link posted a few messages before was an incremental ota file for N6F27I

Noob question

Given that my phone was dying (unbelievably slow), I've decided to install Franco kernel.
To do that, I've installed a custom recovery (and rooted the device).

Today I received a notice of an OTA.
I tried to install it and it failed.

I reverted to stock recovery.
I downloaded the latest Shamu image, erased system and pushed the latest system.img.
I rebooted the device in order to start updating the phone, via OTA.

Upon rebooting, I was expecting to have lost custom kernel and root, and it was not the case.
Also, upon checking for updates, the system told me I am updated to the latest patch.

Can someone please clarify to me why root and kernel have not been altered, and if the update came via system.img.
Also, how do other users go about updating their rooted phones, using this thread first post?

I have a Nexus 6 that came with a Project Fi kit from Swappa.com; so, I assume this is a "project fi" model. However, both t-mobile and project fi show "6.0 / MRA58X" listed next the their names. I am wondering why the OTA updates are different and how important the differences are (i'm guessing very important). The model is n6f27i. Which of the OTA updates listed in the OP is the 2017-09 security patch update and can anyone affirm that what I have is the project fi model and not the t-mobile model? I will be using this on the t-mobile network. Thanks to all who reply!

I'm on Project FI and using the latest version OTA with no problems. The link to the full OTA is a couple of posts previous to yours.

Google now (and have for about a year, if not more) offer "full" OTA images. These are large images that contain the whole system image, not just a binary patch.

Why they're called OTA's I'm not 100% sure, they're not provided by OTA. But they can be applied by sideloading, the same as the incremental OTAs can be. They allow you to upgrade your phone to the very latest version, without having to unlock bootloaders etc etc. They're great for people like me who want an up-to-date phone but for the security of the info on the device, refuse to unlock the bootloader.

So, two types of OTA

1) The old incremental ones you're talking about
2) FULL OTAS that have everything the phone needs - they overwrite everything else on the phone (system software I mean, your userdata stays intact)

The kernel is on the boot partition. Nowadays, we use system-less root, so that is on the boot partition as well.

By updating system, you have updated the main Android files. But some updates also have a new modem, bootloader and other phone specific stuff, that you should probably update as well.

Anyway, a custom kernel will only help a little bit on speed. If you haven't done a total wipe recently, then go that (both data and internal storage). And remember that even unused apps can slow down the phone, so remove those.

Here's the update in this thread. I downloaded update via ota, then I uploaded from the download location in my Shamu. Then I uploaded to my drive. This must be flashed with adb/fastboot. The only change is ambient notifications and a slightly rounded search bar. Maybe more but I gotta look into it some more.
