Because it is not supposed to! XX as stated in my OP is for Europe.

Anyway everything is not lost, see in thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997 and get a ZS one. There is currently linked
N7000ZSLPF-4.0.3-2012 May-N7000OZSLPF-----------Hong Kong
N7000ZSLPF-4.0.3-2012 May-N7000OZSLPF-----------Taiwan

Pick your poison but I don't know that there is Chinese keyboard in any of them.

So i am on GB right now 2.3.6 and when i do the *#247* IMEI * i see KOR? but i dont see ZS . and when i installed 2.3.6 i made sure to pick the HK fw. just curious on why its not on that list.
but thank you for the reply and help .

ZS is the region code for some Asia (HK and Taiwanese) ROMs, when you install ZS ROM and you do *#247*IMEI*, you can then choose one of the CSC code available in the ROM, like for instance for China:
CUH = CHINA
INT = CHINA
TEC = CHINA
TIY = CHINA
CMC = CHINA
CHN = CHINA
M00 = CHINA

As stated in the SamFirmware code page: http://samfirmware.webs.com/samsunglettercode.htm

I hope it is clearer now :)

And how does XXLPY fit into that scheme ? ;)
+1

A point has been made by Entropy512 on that point, for ICS, Samsung added an extra P in the scheme. I have planned to update the scheme for ICS soon :)
Could you please update the thread or post a reply regarding this? as I can't find Entropy512's post.
Also according to the scheme, I9100XWLS8 is older and therefore has a lower changelist than I9100ZCLSF (These are the I9100 official JB ROMs. Sorry I'm not using N7000 ROMs to explain but this should apply across all of Samsung right?). However LS8's changelist is 816988 and its build date is 14.1.13, but LSF's changelist is 721689 and build date is 4.1.13. Is this an anomaly, or is ROM naming inconsistent between countries, or is there another explanation? Thanks.

It doesn't apply across all models. In fact some of the regions (char 1 & 2) are even different across models. Same with csc's. We can use this as a guide but it can never be 100% accurate

So, I'm a little bit confused with recognizing the versions of basebands! According to your explanation only 5 characters should be used, but I have this one i9300xxella. So, is this XX region or XE region?
:confused:

I recently bought an ACE device (S5830M) and in PDA I have WHLA1 which us the same as MODEM, CSC is UUBLA1. In your list I couldn't find WH region. Western High maybe? This phone was bought unlocked at a US retail store.

Additionally, if I understood your reference guide correctly, I can split a firmware, load with Odin everything except CSC and custom software will prevail (if loaded with firmware)?

I have a confusion about naming convention for firmware. To take an example, consider N7000XXLT4

XX=Country code
L=year
T=month
4=revision number

Question is about T. Months range from 1 to 12 (Jan to Dec). So the letters should be A to L. What does T mean for month then?

T=August

same android versions tends to not changing the second last letter.
i.e. A=Jan,..., L=Dec, M=Jan, N=Feb, ..., T=Aug
