Hi, first of all, thanks for the guide but I'm quite confused now.
My system is XXUGNG8 and my baseband XXUFNC9.
So XX is for roughly europe, NG8 and NC9 tell me it's from 2014 because of the N, G says it's from July and 9 is the revision.
I got that. But what about the UG and UF in the middle? What do they stand for?

UA=?????
NH2= August 2014 rev. 2

I'm running on KitKat 4.4.2 EchoeRom with AEL Kernel that came with this rom. Firmware is N9005DXUGNK1. Modem version i don't know where to see that. Recovery is TWRP 2.X.

Could somebody explain what i need to do with the firmware/modem/kernel part?

I understand how to flash the rom, make backup etc. But i'm not really sure if i need to change the firmware, modem, kernel or any other things first before i flash.

No you don't need to change the modem before flashing, you can do that after and separately to ROM at any time you want. Kernel can come separate on some phones but I think with Note they come with ROM (but I'm not 100% sure if that is always true as only flashed CM & NightOwl on Note ..... )
Modem is listed as Baseband in your about phone menu.

"U" stands for what YEAR?

I need a reality check with two items:

1. What does the "U" stand for in this Galaxy Note 8 stock firmware bootloader filename? BL_N950FXXU4CRGA ... tar.md5

* If I understand correctly, the "U" that follows the "XX" refers to the year of release. If so, "S" = 2019 which follows that "U" = 2021 ?? What am I missing? Or, maybe I'm getting stock firmware files from a bad source?
* I'm a novice and working to learn firmware file naming conventions. I get that the "XX" refers to the region it was meant for; in this case, UK and the surrounding areas. Or so I thought...

2. Does the "4" that follows the "U" refer to the version number?

* If "yes", I think I get it. My confusion is that I was expecting a non-numeric character to follow after the "U", i.e. a letter of the alphabet that would represent the calendar MONTH of release. Instead, the number "4" follows the "U" in this case.
* Is the MONTH character in the file name optional?
* Or, maybe the use of a MONTH character in the file name was discontinued a while back and I just didn't get the memo?

Thank you in advance for your help!
