Replacing stock launcher

I actually move unwanted bloat to a folder on my SD card. Even with a complete bork, an Odin restore can put you back to good, worst case. Point is, there are a lot of affiliated widgets and such that are Touchwiz specific which can go if you nuke the TW launcher as well. End result at the very least is a much tidier /system/app directory. :)

Updating?

I've moved LauncherPro over to system/app and I've had it for awhile, however I noticed that it's no longer says it's installed in the market. How do I update the app in system without losing my LauncherPro theme?

That's the rub. If there is a version update, you have to pull it down and then just move it from /data/app to /system/app. If you absolutely MUST update, then copy it to /data/app, install the update, then move it back to /system/app

I have no clue if this will work without interrupting your theme though.

Can you remove the other touchwiz stuff in /system/app? O_O
-TW calculator, calendar, calendar provider? And their respective .odex files?

Yep. I don't know if pulling calendar would be a good idea without a suitable replacement. Anything you pull equates to reduced functionality, so make sure it's something you don't need, or that isn't needed by something else.
Example: I pull the verizon contact backup app, knowing I will never use it, but if you hit the trigger in the settings for it, your phone locks up.
I also use super manager because it gives greater detail about what each app is then root explorer.
Good rule of thumb is if you aren't sure, don't pull it.

Cool thanks Daswolven! You've brought up a great point about the calendar without a replacement. I'm going to leave that stuff alone for now

If you do decide to poker around, I would again recommend Super Manager. The little bit of added detail in the info makes a huge difference in figuring out what is what.

I apologize if I am missing something as I'm a noob to Android. I can't seem to find the AWD launcher files in the data folder. I browse to it on my phone using Astro but it comes up empty. Any help would be appreciated. Also the list of files that you have removed is not coming through. Don't know if I'm the only one not getting that or what but I thought you might wanna know.

Try Root Explorer.

My photo uploads have a habit of disappearing, I have to find work arounds from work because we block all the media sites.

Currently my list is as follows:

I left the SNS sync stuff and the live wallpapers in, as I'm playing with the contact functionality for a minute.

Thanks that worked! Forgive me, I am very new to Android (all of three days) and am coming from a BB. Your list is all apk's. In order to get rid of the app do I also need to move or .old the corresponding odex file also?

Thanks!

See if this works, I used Super Manager to replace Twiz but was paranoid about doing it wrong, so I copied Adw from data/app to system/app. I was going to go back & delete it from data/app later if it worked but I forgot because everything worked perfectly. When I checked back here today & saw the post about the market presence of the launcher I decided to check my market d/l list & Adw is still there. Copying instead of cutting/pasting seems to be a temporary workaround.

This didn't work for me unfortunately. I renamed the twizlauncher.apk and twizlauncher.odex files in the system/app directory and moved, in my case, launcherpro from data/app to system/app. After running smooth for a few minutes, i started getting acore force closes repeatedly.

If you have launcher pro in the /system/app, a reboot will correct the fc issues.

You are correct. I initially did a reboot through a QuickBoot application that I use and ended up just powering down completely which solved the problem. I did notice, however, that when I went back into the system/app the odex file for twizlauncher (one of the two that I renamed) was no longer there. Interesting . . .

If you're still getting random acore FC's that seemingly do nothing, then it is likely that you have FB auto sync on. I remember jt saying that TW is integral to FB sync and that it can cause acore FC's which were present on his initial super clean ROM before he added TouchWiz back in.

I find this odd, because I use the Facebook SNS syncing, and have no touchwiz at all. I have only ADW and Launcher Pro in my /system/app.... no problems, no FC. The SNS integrates with the stock TW contact.apk, not the TW launcher.

Interesting. I also have ADW and LPP in system/app and am deodexed, but I was getting the acore FC's myself and rebooting didn't solve the problem. The FC's didnt actually appear to do anything, but they would get more and more annoying over time. I turned of "auto-sync" and have since had no such FC. I actually did notice that the FC would pop up many times while the sync (which was automatic) icon just appeared on the top taskbar.

I started getting the fc's after I renamed the Twiz launcher odex file. When I put the extension back to the .odex the fc's stopped. The launcher is the only stock file in system/app I've changed so far.
