[Req] Edge only when screen off

Certain apps such as palringo, other im clients, or constant email checking can drain the battery on the x1 rather quickly. I was wondering if its possible to always drop the phone down to an edge connection (if available) when the screen is turned off or the phone is locked since speed is not really a concern when I'm not actually using the phone and the battery consumption would be a lot lower on an edge connection. It was just an idea I had, I'm not really familiar with programing for windows mobile devices, but any comments would help. If a program already exists that can do this, I'm sorry but I wasn't really sure what to search for :/

I thought WinMo already did this, my X1 always reconnects to WiFi once it's woken up.

I mean like don't use 3g to get updates because edge would use less battery power, but maybe I'm mistaking and 3g doesn't really use that much more battery power then edge.
