You've come to the right place:D

You need to root and gain S-off. Personally, I would use Facepalm since it's Windows friendly. Bigdaddy recently used it to gain S-off and he told me it's quick and easy. Unless you have a computer running Ubuntu, you probably don't want to fool with Dirty Racun. The links to both methods are in my guide. Also check Bigdaddy's guide in my OP, as it has some pretty useful info contained in it, especially as far as rooting goes. You'll want to update your firmware (radios) once you're S-off, too.You can find the info for that in the link below. Afterwards, it'll be time to flash a ROM:cool:

Feel free to post back with any questions you may have. We're more than happy to help:beer:

Off to study Facepalm

Thank-You!

You must have read my mind when you spoke of Facepalm being Windows friendly since I do use Windows. Currently I am using Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit. I read somewhere around here a few of the developers won't support anything Windows based. I guess I understand, we have all lived with it's flaws daily but it is all I have access to so I just wanted to make sure I'll be good with that OS running?

So, I am off to study Facepalm and then I will go from there. Just to make sure, it was a good thing that I never updated my phone if this is the route I am going, correct?

Thanks again.

I have Win7 64bit Facepalm worked flawlessly.
BTW the developers of DirtyRacun don't support windows.
It's never a good idea to update your hboot but everything else is fine, that's why s-off is highly recommended you can update firmware/radios manually

Which Root Method to use?

Ok, thank you once again. First things first, my phone needs to be rooted before I can obtain S Off. It sounds almost simpler to get the S Off than the rooting? So given the following information, which method would you recommend for rooting my HTC Evo 4G LTE?

Hboot 1.12
Hardware Version 0003
Software Version 1.13.651.1 710rd
Android Version 4.0.3
HTC Sence Version 4.0
HTC SDK API level 4.20
HTC extension version 403_1_GA_8
PRI version 2.28_003
PRL version 25014

The confusing thing to me right now is that as time goes by and updates occur, the methods constantly change. I know my basically untouched phone should be able to be rooted using an older simpler method?

No problem.

Yeah, if you're set up on Windows already, then Facepalm is the way to go. Just take your time and pay attention to what you're doing and everything will be fine. Some of this stuff can be a bit mind-boggling at first (it was for me for the longest time, anyhow), but if you just read, read, then read some more, and ask questions along the way, you'll be fine. Nobody came in here on Day #1 and knew EVERYTHING there was to know about rooting & flashing.

Good luck:thumbup:

Rooting is a pretty big step because it involves unlocking your bootloader and flashing a custom recovery. Bigdaddy has a pretty easy-to-follow guide to get it done, but it's no "one-click" method, either. You can also try hasoon2000's root tool, which is advertised as being a one-click method. I was fortunate enough to use another one-click tool to root my phone in well under ten minutes, but unfortunately that method isn't working for the time being. Just look over the instructions for each one and go with whatever you're most comfortable with:D

Also keep in mind that the rooting method is pretty much the same, regardless of your Hboot version. The Hboot version really, at this point, affects what method you use to gain S-off.

Thank-You

You guys are great! I am off to do some researching of my own on the forum before I ask any more questions. I have been thinking about this for quite some time and just want to make sure I educate myself before I get into trouble.

You have been extremely helpful and I will be back later after I have done some reading around the forum.

Here's the deal, I find myself in the middle of nowhere all the time. Once Im 50 miles from home, my phone sucks, I used to be able to force roam on my old sprint phones - no more, sprint took care of that for us all. I want to be able to force roam and I want wifi tether that doesn't cost me $20 a month. I do have foxfi which allows me the wifi tether - it works because I never updated my phone - I hear after updating it won't work. That still leaves me with the roaming issue and I tried roam control but can't get it to load successfully and can't get the team to answer any emails. I know rooting takes care of all this and much much more.

Don't sweat it. Let's get the rooting & S-off done, then we'll worry about force roaming and tethering. We can get you pointed in the right direction on both issues;)

Hey bigdaddy619 - it is your method that i have been watching QBking77 explaining. Wow, what a small world - I have watched that video half a dozen times, came here one day and found the guy who invented the method! That is very cool indeed. I know somebody else did some of the legwork, but the current method is yours and I just now put 2 and 2 together. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to updating my OS from 4.0.3 to current today if I am getting ready to pull the trigger and root in the next few days?

Funny thing, the method you mentioned by bigdaddy is familiar - I have watched a youtube video that a QBking77 had done, I am sure you are probably familiar with it. I have downloaded the software and already have SDK installed on my PC per his instructions. I think I am just about comfortable enough to go ahead and do this - tomorrow will be the day! Thanks for your help and tomorrow I may need more of it but hopefully everything goes smooth.

If I use that video as my guide - it does follow the bigdaddy method correctly right?

Nothing important here really, just wanted to say how struck I was by your helpfulness and generosity. I've been reading a little over the past few weeks and finally joined a forum and immediately found you guys. What a lucky break for me! I will root tomorrow!!! It's about time.

Accomplishing Something

Ok, I have in fact installed SDK and ADB on my pc and added it to my path and verified it through a command. I have also downloaded bigdaddy's root_HTC-EVO-LTE zip file. Since I am reading that there is definitely the possibility I will lose everything on my SD Card, a 32gb sandisk 10 (the red one), I have backed it up on my computer. I have also backed up my contacts (I think) through my google mail account? I only have 2 apps that I have ever actually bought - foxfi and angry birds, I don't care about losing either of them so I should be covered there?

I have set up a account at HTC Dev and my plan is to unlock the bootloader early in the morning - my phone should still be functional at this point correct? Then in the evening when I think somebody might be around in case I screw things up, I will root.

I don't think the file I downloaded was the same thing I watched in the video that QBking downloaded but I think the zipfile I did download is even more current, would that be a correct statement?

Thanks again guys!!!

If you have your phone contacts synced to your Google account you should be fine-same with your apps.

As far as the file goes, I imagine that it's the most recent one there is. Bigdaddy doesn't normally slouch in that department;)

I forgot to mention that I did also install current drivers:

HTC-BMP-USB-Driverx64_1.0.5375
HTCDriver_4.0.1.001
You may want to boot into bootloader before you begin as it will install more drivers :D
Btw you can run all the commands from the root folder you don't need to use sdk unless you want to
Also you may want to backup your Internal sdcard to your PC as well that is the one that will be wiped doing the unlock process.
This is the most up to date root zip http://d-h.st/Q2c

Aha, glad I read this just now, I actually had my phone in my hand and had loaded the bootloader and was ready to unlock. Now I am first going to take your advice and go back and reload the drivers with my phone in bootloader to get those extra drivers!

Thank you!!! and Thank you button clicked!!!

Hey your there, when do you sleep man? Maybe your like me, up late and up early most days. Ok, so I uninstalled the drivers, put my phone into bootloader, plugged it in and reloaded the drivers - hope thats what you meant for me to do?
I'm a vampire I sleep during the day :D
I don't think you needed to uninstall the drivers if they were needed they should have installed when you went into bootloader :D

So in Device manager I now I have a MY HTC under "my computer" and a HTC Android phone USB Device under Disk Drives and DVD/CD Rom. Before there was only 2 I am sure I did not have the My HTC.
