Drivers

Ok, so I installed new drivers and then reinstalled them because I did not have my phone connected to the pc. When I ran a cmd: adb devices, i got this:

C:\Users\GolfPro>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT25BS407122 offline

Update: Ok, I think I must have just not done things in the correct order. I uninstalled all the drivers completely. Rebooted my PC, reinstalled the drivers with my phone attached and in bootloader. Rebooted the phone and attached to PC as a disk drive and now I got what I think we are looking for:

C:\Users\GolfPro>adb devices
List of devices attached
HT25BS407122 device

I am unlocked

Ok, I went through the unlock bootloader process and everything worked perfectly - it was simple and fast! Reboot my phone in bootloader and it says "unlocked". Had to go through the whole phone set-up thing, but that only takes about 5 minutes. I did loose any apps I had on the phone but I don't care because there are only 2 I have ever actually bought, the rest were all free ones that I can redownload if I want. Also, I had backed everything up but the only other thing I lost was my contacts and I had backed them up to Google so when I went through phone set-up, it just grabbed my contacts from there. Haven't checked music or videos yet but I have them all on the PC anyway so even if they are gone, they're not really gone - and actually I don't think they are, I still have my custom ringtones I made from my music so??? We'll see.

Thanks all, next step, ROOT

So, FinZ28, You have been a great help so far and it was your original post that got me this far. I am only unlocked - that's it so far. Should my next step be S-off or Root?

Thank-You
You are quite welcome.

You need to install a custom recovery on your phone now, if you haven't already done so, and flash whatever custom ROM you would like. If you don't know what ROM to flash, just install the free app SuperSU from the play store. This app, as I explained in the guide, is what allows root apps to run on your phone. Once you've done this, I suggest making a backup of your ROM in recovery. Then you're ready to Facepalm:cool:

Here is the link to the Team Win Recovery Project thread. It's the preferred recovery to use on the EVO LTE.

S-off obtained!!!

FinZ28 - I did it! But not without a lot of help from you and Bigdaddy. Last night I got him for about a hour and we went through the process: Got supercid, then went for S-off, and finally we updated the firmware as you had suggested.

I know because I was involved in the process, it took longer than it should have - one or two things didn't look exactly like we thought they should (adb shell was asking permission to be granted su access - and we granted it:laugh:) but in the end, mission accomplished!

A million thanks - I don't know why you guys aren't working for Intel or NASA or who knows, but thanks again

Better Performance all Around

It seems that basically there have been about 3 of us in this thread from the start, but just in case anyone else is reading this I have to mention a few things. If you are considering rooting your phone and obtaining S-off - do it. I am sure there are many folks around here who are just as willing to share their knowledge as the guys who helped me. Probably best to ask for their help unless you have a pretty good skill set to start with.

That all said, what I really wanted to say was my phone is faster than before, my battery lasts longer than before, and now there is a whole new app market that wasn't available to me before. I am rooted, S-off and have updated my firmware - that's it, no new roms or anything like that - I am stock and still I have these great benefits from going through this process. I can get rid of unwanted apps, and I have control of ROAM!!! One of my chief goals. I did spend $3 - big deal, I would have spent $50 last week when I was in the middle of nowhere!

I would say we are lucky to have this environment and these people here to help us (for those of us who need it) and when they ask you to buy them a cup of coffee if they helped you or push the thanks button - DO IT for heavens sake, they deserve it.:highfive:

Thanks for your help everyone - you know who you are.

Okay, guys and gals, looking for some input here. I feel like the guide I wrote is pretty complete as it is now. However, reading through it, I feel like it may be a bit too much info for one guide. My question is, should I leave the material as-is, or should I break it down and say, maybe have a separate guide for S-on kernel flashing? Please let me know what you think.

Much appreciated.... Had the 4g and 3d and flashed like crazy. Much simpler back then but just made it over to lte and really awesome to come across a full explanation on why and how. Thanks.....

No problem. There is definitely a bit of a learning curve with the LTE as opposed to the OG EVO. As much as it's despised at times, I like the fact that there is one primary method of rooting the LTE (using HTC Dev, that is), as opposed to the OG that had several different methods of obtaining root depending upon the Hboot.
