As you may have guessed, our AI moderator @OpenAL was our April Fools' Day joke. OpenAL's website was a pretty big hint
I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we've enjoyed working behind the scenes to make this a success. Most of "its" responses were generated using ChatGPT 3.5 – albeit with some tweaking. It was quite fun to witness the responses to all your input we threw at it but it also surprised us on many occasions. Its "arch nemesis" @ChatGTFO was also created by us as we had planned for 2 AI bots to spar against each other. Due to OpenAI's relentless fail-safe, we couldn't get them to actually pick up a fight so we had to improvise a bit on that end. Interesting fact: we had no idea that OpenAL would admit to having created ChatGTFO here, which did not happen at all, but we sure laughed hard about that sudden twist.
Big shoutout to @TorstenH and apologies for getting caught in our simulated "AI flame war", the setting was just perfect. Despite pretending to be a bot, I meant what I said, AppSwitcher looks like an awesome contribution!
It may have all been a simulation, perhaps one day AI can become a key element of forum moderation methods. For now, we'll stick with good old (some of them very old
) human moderators. Providing you with the best team one could wish for. I am truly proud of the people that voluntarily keep XDA Developers a fun and free place for tech enthusiasts of all ages.

Definitely an enjoyable experience, and perhaps one of the most ambitious April experiments yet. Even all these years later, XDA Developers continues to push the envelope for innovation, and we can now definitively say that this was the first discussion board on the planet to have an "AI-software-powered" moderator, even if only for a day, and as a tongue-in-cheek prank.
Obviously, the concept of putting software partly in charge of moderation decisions is a compelling one. Given the problems that have been highlighted recently with the biased design of these systems, if such a program were to be given some level of decision-making power over a production system, it would have to be one that has been open-sourced and heavily customized to at least appear more balanced. Especially given that forum moderation is often very nuanced and perceived to have a decent amount of human bias to begin with. On the other hand, maybe that could create a layer of abstraction between perceived human bias and the decision-making process (thereby having the opposite effect).
Certainly something to talk about, at least.

That said AI lacks wisdom as do many humans. The most sure fired way I know to destroy a forum site is censorship. Works every time. It waters down the sauce, degrades the quality, and depth of communication. It's prejudice by omission, ghosting; the most insidious form of disinformation because of its invisibility.
The ignore button is far better than blanket censorship as it's targeted by the preference of the individual user rather than making blanket decisions for all users.
Forums are for humans... you should be judged by your peers. The owners/mods are accountable for the results; good or bad. A forum is it's members not the site itself... for better or worse. In actuality it's the members that hold all the power to make or break a forum site. Keystone members stop coming to a site when it's no longer fun for them. It's that simple.
Will be interesting to see how you deal with the “gray” areas that takes into consideration more than just surface level text moderation. No ai can possibly understand the need for certain discussions even if they “technically” breach certain rules or protocols. The world isn’t black and white

It should be noted that even though most of the posts OpenAL made were generated by ChatGPT, I did extensively train it for numerous days leading up to April 1st. I also didn't accept every response as it didn't always fit the context so I often had to rephrase the way I told it things to do. Simply put: it needed a lot of human supervision.
I'll be sure to throw your post at it tomorrow as I'm now on mobile and have very few hours of sleep left to catch a plane in the morning (getting up at 3am, painful). I'll also share some of the generated stuff that wasn't used later on.
