ASUS ROG Phone II
Did I read right, that the ROG 2 had gestures? I hate the nav bar. So 2010.
Yes it has gestures but the gestures on Android Oreo on the original ROG has more functions like shortcuts to one hand use and screeshot. The one on the ROG 2 just has 3 functions go home, recent apps and go back that's it. I think it has to do with Android Pie gesture implementation which so far has no real meaningful upgrade over Oreo. I hope ASUS improves further on the gestures and rom overall.

The one good thing about the ROG 2 gestures though is it doesn't show the back, home, recent app icons when swiping like on the ROG phone which I wasn't a fan of to start with.

Hope we could get root soon. Feel good to use it more than 1+7 pro. 6.5h on screen with 50% battery left :))

Hey, i m planning to upgrade from my 6t and i m still thinking between 1+7 pro or Rog 2. I m kinda confused. Can you tell more about your experience moving from the 7 pro to rog 2? Especially the screen since it is has higher resolution and the system difference feel?
Thanks.

I like both phones after i rooted ROG2 because i can do more thing and i can run TitaniumBackup
  • Screen: i dont notice any difference between them at all (FHD vas QHD, 90Hz vs 120Hz). However, i got a touch lag, ghost touch sometime with 1+ . also the curve screen sometime will be the problem when the text is near the side screen (you will see it when you use the text editor). both phones are equal in the screen/ display in term of color or performance.
  • OS: smooth for both however i feel 1+ get hot quite faster than ROG2 . down side of ROG 2: we dont have twrp, kernel etc... so can not do more thing now beside root/ magisk.
  • Camera: 1+ 7 pro much much better. Rog2 is gaming phone so camera is just average. Gcam for Rog2 is not good atm.
  • Battery: 6k vs 4k. 10-12 SOT vs 4-6 SOT. Charging: 2h15 mins vs 1h:30 mins. i prefer ROG2 more than 1+ 7 pro here.
4 days with ROG2 and 2.5 month with 1+7 pro.

I have the 6T and can't get rid of it fast enough. Not impressed with OP anymore and definitely looking for something better. This device hits all the marks for me. I only wish that it used an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of the optical, but at least the color that they use looks to be less invasive than one plus' ugly AF green dot. Camera isn't a big deal for me, as you stated, it's a gaming phone and the camera is not its primary focus. But from all the reviews I have read, it's not a bad one. Not concerned with anything custom anymore, OEM's have brought most of the essential custom features to stock. As long as I can root and flash a couple modules, I'm good. That's not to say that a custom kernel would be unwelcome, but I am pretty sure ASUS does a better job than OP when it comes to stock software. So, hopefully the stock kernel will be good enough. It is an 855+ after all. Can't wait for it to come to the states. ??

I don't think it's that they can't, it's just not their primary focus for a gaming device.

I'm pretty simple when it comes to what my gestures can do. Granted, it would be nice to have extended features, but at the same time, as long as I can get rid of that ugly AF navbar, I'm good. Thank you for your response though

Stock android is very nice but, the rog phone 1 is still stuck on old OS. That's why i was looking for custom roms that provides you with up to date stock android roms.
Also maybe remap the air triggers for custom actions would super nice. And other ports, mods...gcam.

Though I won't deny that oneplus navigation gesture is smooth and pleasing, but everything else is low quality.
I actually want the tencent version because of the price but also concerned whether it will support GSM network and when traveling... And whether i will be able to buy it from aliexpress or so. The 12 Gb version is so expensive for me.

this is true. I didn't really take into account all the specialized features on this device, as it's definitely in a league of its own and unlike anything I've owned prior. I am a bit intrigued, now. Hopefully the low cost will make it a little bit more Dev friendly than the original one was. Either way, I am quite excited and it has been a loooong time since I have felt like this way about a device

Could you pls instruct detail how to root this ROG 2? Thank you,

:) i think i posted it in other thread which concern about lost wifi. 1 Tut of friend did it.

I dont like the current 1+7 pro nav gesture in oos rom (from begin till 9.5.11). have to use fluid nav for it. i heard the q 10 better but lazy to change to it due to instaability of twrp and android q
For the Rog 2, gcam at the moment work average. only the zen 6 version with some changing in setting make it work plus i active the camera2 api for it. need to find the right configuration for gcam :(

Now i have mate 20x and asus rog 2 128gigs
Why ineed sell my mate 20x to have rog 2 12gigs ?

i was use 20x unlock bl, s10+. 1+7 pro, s10 5G and Rog 2 now. 20x was good for 2018 but not now, emui is lagging/ boring compare to rog os or oos, one ui is better also. screen from 3 new phones much better in term color quality. Rog 2 kill 20x in battery usage, i never get 10h+ SOT with 20x before.

So asus can't make good camera ?

So, I don't even have the rog2 yet, but I had the OP7P and the ROG1. The op7t camera is HORRIBLE. I have no idea how they managed to get the dxomark score that they got, but if there is any motion in your frame at all, you can pretty much scrap the picture altogether. When I had the rog1, which has a worse camera setup than the rog2, I was so happy with it I didn't even care about getting gcam going. So, I would not worry about the rog2 camera lagging behind. The only cameras it will be worse than are the huawei's and the pixels.

And an additional good news: bootloader unlocking tools shows up on ASUS web.

Any chance you can post a link here for those of us that don't read mandarin? Also, if there is a bootloader unlock and a global flash-all zip, we should be able to flash the WW version over CN. We don't actually need a recovery.img...

I was able to get to the bootloader unlock download, here you go:
https://www.asus.com/tw/Phone/ROG-Phone-II/HelpDesk_Download/

Can somebody with the CN version try that bootloader unlock tool? If it works, we can definitely flash the WW firmware when asus puts it on their site. Whether it boots or not, well thats another issue. But I am going to give it a go when I have mine and they release the WW firmware.

Just got the phone, it has Google play services embedded you only need to install the Google play store from the websites of the like Apkmirror and you are good to go.
I don't think you need to install other region's rom even if that is possible in the future, the CN roms are the first to get updates and they do have more app features than the global one for instance call recording is already embedded.

I am finalizing my order for the Tencent version, I have a quick question from Rog Tencent version owners.
Can I install banking apps and certificates on CN rom, it should work if the phone has google playstore services. however, just to confirm, do I need to flash it to WW for that?

I have Play Store sideloaded on the stock/locked CN version, and my USA banking apps work correctly (bank check deposit, Robinhood) including fingerprint login. I haven't tried installing certificates.

only working for some old zenfone devices :
you must flash a RAW firmware ( recovery.img inside ) with Asus Flash Tool.cmd
and at this time the only WW RAW firmware we have is without recovery.img

    qx87Nfs.png

If it is an A/B slot device, there isn't a recovery.img anymore.
