Great job with the ROM, it's awesome to see people still supporting these older phones :) unfortunately I have also been having problems with apps like F-Droid and Osmand running out of memory, like @unrealdtc. I flashed F-Droid privileged ota after flashing the ROM. Osmand locks up after a few seconds and F-Droid crashes when it tries to update the repositories. Didn't install Gapps though.
First of all thanks for working on the ROM, it's much appreciated. I am using VNS-L31 and the install process went smoothly. I did a fresh install, no gapps and no magisk. Just two apps installed so far.

However, I have the same issue that F-Droid runs out of memory when fetching updates and then crashes.

Furthermore I am running subtracks for listening to music and it's working, but does not show any covers wich might be some permission issue.

I try to install Gapps nano package and gives me an error 70 "Insufficient storage space available on System partition" then I tried to go to Wipe -> Advanced Wipe -> check System -> Repair or Change File System -> Resize File System and it doesn't increment.

Anyone facing the same problem and have a solution for that?

New Update of LOS 17.1 !

There is a new update of LOS 17.1 into OP for our device !

Changelog :
  • updated system security patch level : May 5, 2022
  • system image partition increased to about 4GB to fix installation of any GApps

Before installing this new update please manually modify the system partition size using this tutorial !

After increasing the partition and installing this new build my issue with F-Droid and subtracks was initially gone. I was able to update F-Droid sources and could install subtracks via F-Droid and play audio. However, when trying again later the issues reappeared after some time. F-Droid fails upon updating the sources at around 24,5MB of 26,5MB and then crashes. I still wonder if this could be somehow related to insufficient space (or rights of the apps) using this build. I'd gladly provide any more log files or further information, if needed. Please note that I do not have any gapps installed as I do not plan to use it on this phone.

As always, thanks for your work on this build and any help. It's much appreciated.

EDIT: Here's an export from logcat from the time around the crash of F-Droid. It appears to be some out of memory exception while the RAM of the device is shown with 3GB and only 1.2GB are used on average:

Thanks again for taking time and your reply. I understand that it looks like an F-Droid related error, but it seems to come up with other apps too.

So, I installed gapps 10.0 nano ARM64 now, but Play Protect prevents me from using it as the device is not certified. Maybe something else is wrong in my setup, but I would rather not want to go via Magisk to make it work (if possible).

Two other things I noticed.

1) There are a lot of GC Alloc errors, so the garbage collection is constantly busy with freeing up space for the heap and eventually it's still not enough as there are out of memory exceptions for other apps (not just F-Droid).

It would appear 3GB of RAM is not enough anymore to run Android...

On a freshly booted device, the "free" command reports almost all the RAM being used:

vns:/ $ free -m
total used free shared buffers
Mem: 2783 2297 485 4 4
-/+ buffers/cache: 2293 489
Swap: 976 0 976

I noticed the swap is a ZRAM device:

vns:/ # cat /proc/swaps
Filename Type Size Used Priority
/dev/block/zram0 partition 999996 0 -1

This should help, but the swap is not being used:

vns:/ # grep Swap /proc/meminfo
SwapCached: 0 kB
SwapTotal: 999996 kB
SwapFree: 999996 kB

Even though the kernel does have swap support:

vns:/ # zcat /proc/config.gz | grep CONFIG_SWAP
CONFIG_SWAP=y

Any idea what's broken?

So, I installed gapps 10.0 nano ARM64 now, but Play Protect prevents me from using it as the device is not certified. Maybe something else is wrong in my setup, but I would rather not want to go via Magisk to make it work (if possible).
Please check OP, there is a fix "Fix Play Store issues" for this issue and it's working very well - not any issues with GApps after applying the fix !

Well actually, ZRAM swap is working... but not for Android apps.

[EDIT] Sound is working by following Step III !

Yes, it's working ... just read once again this topic !

I might be mistaken, but I don't remember seeing "Step III" the first time I went to that topic!

Great news! I've figured out why apps are crashing with the "OutOfMemory" error.

The Dalvik Heap is 16MB max by default and that's not enough for many apps. When heap usage gets close to that value, GC (garbage collection) will occur and the apps will start lagging and then crash.

The solution is to modify /system/build.prop with increased heap sizes.

Enable Developer options, and "Android debugging" + "Rooted debugging".

Install ADB and type the following commands:

adb root
adb shell
mount -o remount,rw /
cat >> /system/build.prop
dalvik.vm.heapsize=128m
dalvik.vm.heapgrowthlimit=64m
dalvik.vm.heapminfree=2m
Then press Ctrl+C to break. Reboot into recovery (adb reboot recovery) and clear caches: Wipe > Advanced Wipe > select "Dalvik / ART Cache" and "Cache" > Swipe to wipe. Then "Reboot System" > "Do Not Install".

@surdu_petru : maybe you could add these options to your future releases?

    Instructions :
    • Install the new TWRP 3.2.3-1 ( needed for Android Q )
    • Reboot to TWRP 3.2.3-1
    • Format data in order to decrypt your device
    • Reboot device to Recovery in order to be able to use data
    • Optionally you can format data as f2fs ( you need to reboot again the device into recovery in order to be able to use data as f2fs )
    • Perform a clean wipe ( Wipe all from Advanced Wipe apart Micro SD card & Internal Storage )
    • Starting with 15/05/2022 you need to resize system partition to 4GB in order to use this ROM , please check this HOWTO !
    • Copy LOS ROM on your device
    • Flash the LOS ROM
    • Optionally flash GAPPS ( always the last available packages ) - ( to avoid any issues it's recommended to flash nano or micro )
    • Wipe cache & dalvik
    • Reboot
    • Enjoy

    Reporting Bugs
    • DO NOT Report bugs if you're running a custom kernel or you installed Xposed
    • Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines, unless you know what you're doing.)
    • If it is a random reboot, grab /sys/fs/pstore/console-ramoops and /sys/fs/pstore/dmesg-ramoops-0. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
    • If the problem disappears after running "setenforce 0" from a root shell, grab /data/misc/audit/audit.log

    I'm aware. Just suggesting if it is possible, since you own the sources for your LOS 14.1.
    The sources code for LOS 14.1 have nothing to do with source code of LOS 17.1 and also they not running in the same kernel. For moment there's no way to fix 📷 on LOS 17.1, so for all wich need camera 📷, they can use stock EMUI or LOS 14.1 . Thanks for understanding ❤️

    Hi !

    Unfortunately the modernization works of the internet line in the property where I live have not been completed, as such the internet provider cannot connect me to the fiber yet ... a few good months have already passed since the works started, I have no idea what's going so hard, so I'm impatient too! Anyway, I'll keep you updated as soon as I switch to fiber, because this custom ROM deserves to be updated.
