Well I have heard from some people that if you fail at installing a custom ROM on a MediaTek chipset device, you brick it as bad as you're screwed up as you likely won't recover your phone anymore. So I'm not gonna risk on doing that on this phone I guess.

Well, you can brick a MediaTek Device, of course.
It happened to me, while I tried to flash the custom recovery, but you still can unbrick it (depends on how bad you bricked it), but for me, I was able to restore it with the EDL (Emergency DownLoad) Mode. There you have to disable the DAA and SLA Protection with the MTK bypass tool and then you can falsh back the stock firmware with SP Flashtool, there are websites in the web, that explain step by step what you have to do (drivers, python, scripts, payloads, etc.). If you read and inform yourself a bit about the topic, you can still think about if it's worth the risk.

if you choose correct custom rom your phone won't be bricked. i've tested 3+ roms and not bricked my phone yet
