do i need to update my firmware first when coming from an old version like that ?

You should update your firmware when you are coming from old roms or old miui builds.

For the latest 8.9 version 13.0.9 firmware is recommended.
But you can use 13.0.10 with no worries (as i have)

about 48MP on gcam , is not possible because camera of pixel phones is 12MP and GCam Mod is ported from Pixel Phones so....
you need MIUI Camera for 48MP

Somehow gcams just crash for me withput showing anything..

somehow both keep crashing for me. pity.

i dig the miui cam but it doesnt have photo sphere / panorama mode.

- other app using camera is stuck
or the last chance is a format data (or maybe install a fastboot miui rom and then come back to custom rom)
running out of ideas too

Yes , GCam need Play Services
never used MicroG so idk

I use the vanilla ROM with microG and GCam - no Play Services needed.
GCam: MGC build 8.1.101 (snap) with the corresponding .xml configs - all lenses work, also panorama etc

NikGapps Core always worked fine for me
ADB Sideload or flash directly on recovery (after rom flash and reboot to recovery)

Does anyone know how to fix the keyboard font resetting to default after reboot. Once you switch system font or keyboard app theme back and forth it starts to respect the system font until the next reboot.

And it's not just the default AOSP keyboard. I've installed Simple Keyboard - the one that is a fork of AOSP I believe, and the other Simple Keyboard from the guys that produce the Simple Phone, and it's the same.
