Just a question. Of those that cannot retain root when using Pixel stock magisk patched boot image, are you flashing the Pixel stock magisk patched boot image over the Rice Droid magisk patched boot image? Or are you flashing the Pixel stock magisk patched boot image over Rice Droid boot image (not magisk patched)? Curious if there is something here?

I use Franco's flasher and it worked for me. Although it didn't work a couple of times and it did work a couple of times. Seems to be inconsistent and I have no idea why.
Alright So I just bought EXKM and followed all the steps and now I'm maintaining root so I'm guessing it has something to do with franco's flasher

There's no reason to Magisk patch RiceDroids boot image first as it gets completely overriden when flashing Magisk Patched stock image.

You just Magisk patch the stock image and flash it. Then when you flash a custom kernel using EKM or similar app, the kernel scripts copy the Magisk patches over to it's boot image during install.

I understand that. 👍 I was curious if those who do not retain root flashed a patched (stock) image over another patched (Rice Droid) image and this process causing an issue. But the 'overridden' may toss my hypothesis aside.

Yea that's what I'm saying. It wouldn't matter because it gets completely overriden anyways as your essentially ripping out the entire boot image and replacing it with another. It's not doing any sort of patching or copying backing and forth like flashing a custom kernel that has an anykernel3 script has for maintaining root :)
