Ok, you got me there. I always equated the two.

I gather that the boot.img is actually a file that contains the kernel itself. Is that right? So in answer to your question, yes, I compared the boot.img files from the two factory image releases.

Exactly...

The boot.img holds the kernel and the "ramdisk"

The ramdisk can change here and there (it has about 25 files) but the kernel is the same. That I checked myself.

So with that said, the kernel has not changed since the initial 5.1.0 build. I tested it myself. However I am sure the ramdisk has been tweaked between builds! Hence the MD5's that dont match. But trust me and the other Recognized Dev... The kernel itself has not changed! This I am sure of!

EDIT: When I was a newb I thought that the kernel was the boot.img. Dont feel bad... I thought the same thing until a few years ago... This is called learning! :good:
I like the way you research! I would have done exactly the same (not knowing what I presented now)! You are on the right path to learning!

I'm bit of a noob. I'm running an unlocked, stock, rooted, decrypted version of 5.0.1, with Franco kernel and TWRP recovery. For some reason, my Nexus 6 is no longer recognized by a computer. Can I install this pre-rooted 5.1 without a PC? By downloading the .zip directly onto my device internal storage and flashing through recovery? Or using Flashify? And would I be able to flash the bootloader.img and radio.img?

Alternatively, how would I unroot and restore to factory settings without a PC? Hopefully this would allow me to get the OTA and fix my connection issues. I'll then use NRT to root and unlock.

Thanks

Can you use/access adb or fastboot??? I would not do anything until you get adb/fastboot fixed. If you go into bootloop and can't get to bootloder/fastboot you got big problems.

Nope. It just says "waiting for device." I used to be able to connect through Wifi ADB, but I can't even do that anymore.

reboot your pc --> boot your phone into bootloader -> hold power button volume down at same time -> plug phone into pc -> open cmd terminal -> type -> fastboot devices does pc see your phone? use vol up/down go to reboot -> push power button to reboot.

Nope...still nothing. However, when I connect the device in fastboot mode, my PC recognizes it s an 'unknown deice.' It still will not let me update the drivers.

You've lost your drivers. I assume you are using windows - so with the phone plugged into pc -> go into pc device manger and uninstall any/all drivers that show android device - unplug phone -> reboot pc and then plug phone back into pc. you should see the drivers reinstalling - see if that works.

edit: if above don't work try this http://androidxda.net/download-install-google-nexus-6-usb-drivers-for-adb-fastboot/

    THREAD CLEANED

AT OP's request, I have gone through and deleted several pages worth of useless posts. We really need users to start searching before posting! Nearly all of the posts I deleted were questions that can be easily answered by conducting a simple Google or XDA search.

Along with searching, we also need to keep in mind that this is a Development Thread, meaning discussions in here need to pertain to development.
