I've owned and flashed a few Androids most recently gnex. But I'm a bit confused with what's happening here with the Note. Can I flash CWM this ROM coming from rooted (obviously) stock ROM. Would that qualify as a safe Kernel?
Flash abyss 4.2 red pill from recovery. Then go to advance/reboot recovery. You should have a red coloured recovery now. Perform wipes from there and install zip rom. It's the safest way as some ICS kernels have a parameter activated which can fry the memory chip. Gingerbread kernels are known to be safe.

Is it then safe to do a Nandroid backup in recovery?

how did you root it ?
if you flashed cwm.zip first and then rooted it by installing su
you need to first again flash cwm.zip and when it starts again you need to flash abyss4.2 and then follow it from there
That's what I was missing... I flashed cwm then installed abyss and it's counting :)

But now it's just running a counter... I'm at 4400 and climbing??

after flashing abyss..reboot to recovery..and if it keeps counting just go to recovery manually..press the home+poweron+vol up buttons till u boot up
