Just a quick review of the 3.6 build to those, who are still on older ROMs. I've been using it since Saturday, so the ROM received a couple of days of "abuse".
I was on Kayants JB 4.2.2 Illusion since it's release (and didn't have stock ROM since I got the phone), I wanted to upgrade to KitKat Paranoid-ROM since Kayant released it, but the one more build I wanted just didn't come... so decided to upgrade to KitKat finally testing all the available ROMS (CM11, Paranoid 4.0, AOSB, Omni and this).
Ended up with TJKV's SlimKat (3.6 at the moment). By far the most lag-free, enough customizable and memory friendly.
I saw lot of posts mentioning how much free memory they have.... after a memory wipe. Niiiice, but as you start to use your phone it goes back to the basic state the ROM and the apps need. So I had about 50-60MBs of free RAM with the JB Illusion, and having used Star Wars Collection in the last couple of weeks, I always needed a memory wipe before starting, as the game need as much free RAM as possible. It was scary slow with that, could see the loading animation stop for seconds.
I have 80-120MBs free RAM while using the phone with SlimKat, so tried SWC. The extra 30-60MBs of RAM makes a huge difference. Loading barely stops, as while the gameplay is still slow by multi-cored phones' standards, loading times are not scary.
As TJKV implented Quarkx' latest builds, bluetooth headsets finally work!!! BT was a pain in the
@SS since moving up from JB 4.1.2.
Overclocking is out as Quarkx took it out from CM11 for a reason. You can overclock using SetVSel. My green lens is overclocked and undervolted (
[email protected] -
[email protected]) and no FCs since. SetVSel has 2 governor settings On Demand and Performance... but On Demand seems to be a tad slower in use, so went with Performance. No real difference in battery times, so Performance worth it.
Battery... I can make 24hrs of use with 2hrs talking, about 1-2 hrs of Wi-Fi, no mobile data use, BT use in car (about 1 hr a day)... SlimKat feels the best for me on the battery also. I had about 20hrs with the JB Illusion.
To the free memory question... I use Launcher8 and it might not be the most memory friendly launcher also, so SlimKat is a real joy on the memory.
There is a blink of laziness when contacts are opened or when I open a contact shortcut from the launcher... really just a blink. General use is lag-free.
I see the difference in the launcher too when scrolling from top to bottom... had some lagging before, but no lags with the SlimKat.
One more. Antutu... I had 4400 something with the Illusion ROM (that was pretty good as I had as low as 2700 as some other roms with the same overclocking), SlimKat does 4875.
All in all, my most important considerations were: free memory and lag-free operation. Finally I feel the Defy does what it should have been since it's release. A biiiiiiiiiiiiiig high five to TJKV! :victory::highfive:
Installed SlimKat on Saturday... and having slept on the phone (for the 1000th time) on Monday evening my "already cracked for a year screen" has a big piece fallen out. Factory screens are so expensive here, that it just doesn't worth buying one... I'll probably upgrade to Sony Xperia V. Was thinking about Moto G, but don't like the overall quality and that it's not microSD expandable...
I think the Defy has almost the best support from programmers... Moto G will be the next Defy as I see, so support will be strong, but it just doesn't feel as rugged and as quality as my good old "Terminator T-800". I need to find a T-1000...
Great job TJKV! Keep the Defy alive!
