EDIT: I've disabled them manually by going to sys/class/leds/button-backlight and then editing max_brightness from 255 to 0. Would be great if there was some other solution?

Just use the kernel from the Optkernel thread and also flash it's modules to get wifi working. That way the leds work as expected and can be configured correctly in the settings app.
