To be honest I think the same. 2 years ago I bought Note 3 and I gave Note 1 to my father. I gave it with a Delirium (TW) ROM. Some months ago he asked me to format it because it became slow and laggy. So I tried this ROM.
For his usage it's OK (especially Facebook and Whatsapp) but I think its too slow for me (maybe because I'm used to Note 3)

By the way, actually Note mounts RR 5.5.6 (I think its right). Do you think I should update to 5.5.9?
Are there huge performance improvements or not?
I know that to update to a release created after 5.5.6 I have to do a clean install and not a simple update, so I would like to be sure its necessary for performance, otherwise he doesn't want me to full wipe his Note.

5.5.9 is by far the fastest variant i've seen but unfortunately it overwrites your custom recovery with cyanogen recovery with which we cannot make nandroid or flash everything we want. of course it's possible to revert back to another kernel with philz or whatever recovery but then the performance improvement is gone as well. conclusion is that someone made a great kernel for this rom/device combo while i cannot imagine why it was necessary to implement exactly the most restricted recovery into this great kernel/recovery combo. perhaps @varund7726 can elaborate a bit on the matter. there may well be a good reason which we don't know but it would be nice to know that reason as to easier digest the then unevitable LOL.

in short, rom and kernel combo have been unreached before, if this recov is needed so be it, if not it would be nice to bring the same rom/kernel with philz, cwm or anything that makes nandroids again.

Thank you. Fortunately a "poor" recovery isn't a big deal, because my father doesn't even know how to use it, and if I would need to clean flash in the future I should always flash a kernel with philz, do everything I want and install a new ROM.

Maybe I'll format his phone, if he'll let me...

The latest Nightowl kernels include Philz recovery -- there is also one with TWRP.
Would 5.5.9 work if I flash one of there over it ?
hi,

I'm using rr 5.5.9 with the latest nightowl kernel (TWRP) since a day. No problems until now. Good batterylife, no reboots, no lagging or something like that.

Greetings
scoute-dich
or you can try @GeeckoDev 's War r2 kernel on 5.5.9, Running smooth on my n7000 :good: it also has Philz recovery.

How do you install it? I got "failed to verify whole-file signature"

MD5 before on PC checked=okay

Nothing unusual, the same as always:

I came from rr 5.5.6, booted in recovery, flashed the kernel, rebooted in new recovery from nightowl-kernel.
Then I went to advanced wipe, wiped everything except internal and external sd-card. At last I flashed the rom and of course again the kernel (to get recovery back) wiped cache and dalvik again and rebooted.

All worked fine, no problems.

I thought the rom bring the new kernel. When you flashed at last the rom, you have not the new recovery?
Hmmm... I have 5.5.9 on my phone and now the problem.
Will wait some day, if recovery will fixed. When not i must try 5.5.6 or other rom and then go your way. Thanks.

what is special with this release is that it includes the kernel which overwrites the kernel/recovery combo we had on before. unfortunately this divice needs a kernel that comes with the recovery included and even more unfortunately the kernel dev chose to use cyanogen recovery which is exactly the almost only recovery that does not allow to flash any zip and/or make nandroid backups, a very weird choice IMO

what you can do now is to download the kernel with the recovery you want to use, philz, twrp or cwm, extract the boot.img on your device and either flash the boot image with flashify or this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=en the later gives you more choiced, i've both of them and must say that the later which is a bit newer serves me better for the moment.

EDIT: the above is an on device pc-free solution, feel free to flash via ADB/fastboot

Cyanogen recovery has the "install update" option, which allows to flash another ROM or kernel.

great reply, what is the purpose of it, you can't flash a recovery zip to get your favorite kernel/recovery combo back and you can't make and restore nandroids. what's to contradict here. it's fact and the last few pages are full of it so no reason to add further confusion by making seemingly contradictory statements.

EDIT: my post was solution oriented which should be the sole purpose. further do you really think that people who provide specific working solutions as i did don't know that one can flash a rom and or don't know the few menu points of cyanogen recovery? because that is what your post implies.

Starting with 5.5.9 I used CM recovery to flash 5.5.7, which includes Philz. After reboot I used Philz to flash 5.5.9 again and War r2 kernel using the multi-zip option.
Works w/o a glitch.

I have another Problem, after reinstall Philz recovery.
Each time i lock my phone it make a reeboot.
Now, after i make the backup, flash again 5.5.9 without the trick for getting Philz and Screenlock work.
When i need to recover or make a new backup, i now know the steps to do :)
