I'm android 4.3, baseband I535VRBMB1, CleanRom 8.2, kernel version 3.0.31

EDIT: forgot....i'm not on safestrap. unlocked and using TWRP recovery

........... also do you use XPosed and\or XPosed apps?.................... I have found most of my Rebootz are because I have too much running in my memory, if I clear my TaskManager and RAM once in awhile or run the Clean Master Widget the phones alot more stable...........

Hi folks. I'm still using CleanROM Seven, but considering upgrading to 8.2. However, I am a bit leery on diving into a thread with over 15,000 posts! :D

So, I read on this page about flashing MF1 firmware and ML1 modem, and I would like to know:

A: - is this something necessary if I use CleanROM 8.2? Or is it optional?

B - would either or both of these be useful/help performance if I stay on CleanROM Seven?

The main reasons I am looking to upgrade have recently manifested on a 3 week vacation we just finished :

1 - serious battery drain compared to what it "used to be", using the same apps and settings I've always used, even on a brand new Anker battery.

2- miserably frequent GPS dropout which made using my S3 for Waze navigation pretty much useless, even in major metropolitan areas.

3- Total loss of cell signal in areas where my wife's stock Bionic was still getting 4G from Verizon, the same carrier I use.

One thing I read about, and tried, was disabling 4G while we were traveling. I used the elusive Phone Info app. That did indeed help with the battery longevity. But we had to end up buying an aftermarket nav system for our car, to use in place of our phones, especially in the mountains. So I began to think about some possibility that the radio software I am using might need an update. Interesting to read about that very thing here, and that the radio software in use on the S3 is considered old and outdated. I'm certainly willing to try something newer.

I just tried one of the KitKat Beanstalk ROMs, but I had to nix it because it failed to reliably sound my daily medication alarms. And having grown used to CleanROM, I had trouble digging for things on Beanstalk that are right where I want them on CleanROM. So I am back to CleanROM Seven unless I can find a reliable replacement.

How much of this enormous thread would be considered no longer pertinent, due to solved issues and updates released?

Every time I post a release you will see this in the change log:

To answer your questions. I would recomend updating Firmware and modem... However.. Keep in mind google had some nasty issues regarding battery drain and GPS lately so before I give up on what you have you may want to check out the new google services...

Read more here: http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...eyboard-drive-sheets-gmail-and-play-services/

Google, IMHO, has been failing at a lot of fronts lately with the battery drain and GPS.

Since I don't like the camera and phone signal issues with AOSP ROMs, it might not be a huge deal for me to have a locked bootloader, so long as we have a way to retain root access. I'm gonna wait until you either get this 4.4 boot issue whupped, or "officially" throw in the towel on it before taking the plunge, though. Thanks for putting all the effort into trying to give us the best of both worlds!

Would you mind just taking a moment to read the post RIGHT above yours please? The one that address your issues?

You already have VRBMF1 firmware installed according to your screenshot.

from the OP:
I can tell you for fact that radio is WAY old. I would start by updating the radio to a matching ML1 baseband. you may have to look around for it.

I would also assume that youre firmware is probably just as old.

So with those as factors I would recommend the latest MF1 Firmware (last version that was unlockable).

That would be where I would start.

If someone could fact check these fimrware and radio versions that would be great. I am at work and dont want to accidentally lock anyone down.

You already have VRBMF1 firmware installed according to your screenshot.

thanks slim. from one of the prior posts i was thinking i needed to flash to update to more recent version ML1 baseband, MF1 Firmware, and 8.2 ROM

You're welcome. Flashing the VRUCML1 modem is personal preference but it is recommended to at least be on VRBMF1 firmware. I'd guess that you rooted/unlocked on the stock VRBMF1 firmware, so there is no need to reflash that firmware. If you think your data or reception is worse on CleanRom 8.2, flash the VRUCML1 modem and see if it helps. You very well may not notice a difference. Not everyone does.

If you flash this ROM and then any MOD OR KERNEL not included in the ROM and have problems you will need to wipe clean and start over before posting a bug.

    Dont flash and drive! ;)
