8 won't boot without the CAF-rebased lineage msm8974 kernel. And I've not gotten enough of the a5 patched into that to start up anyway. The old kernel is fine for lineage 14 but not 15.
I don't really have the free time to port a device into a new kernel.
Though I must say, being paid a living wage for doing that sort of work would be a pretty nice vocation to have. Wish that looked more feasible.
I've even researched on kickstarter as suggested, and only found one successful android-os-based project which wasn't an app, which actually got funded, that didn't just rob people of their money and disappear.
I don't suspect it'd be too easy to set up a kickstarter for the a5 for extended support with ota updates... I figured out my requirements, I'd have to have up front enough to support myself for a year to be able to put in the full time R&D required to keep the device fully updated.
If there's interest in a kickstarter campaign then I'd need feedback to justify setting one up.
And I realize discussion of such things is edgy according to the forum rules, so if the post (or I) goes AWOL don't be too concerned.

I'm sure we all appreciate you for your continued support of this archaic device. I'm just glad to have Nougat running on my phone! Sure, I'd like to see what Oreo has to offer (mmmm...double-stuffed android...), but I've been of the mindset that our model is just not quite up to snuff. So Nougat works for me. Not gonna pester you about it.

On a different note, and not to derail the topic, but have you thought about joining steemit.com? It's a social networking site where you can earn the cryptocurrency STEEM for writing quality posts. The more upvotes you get, the more you make. It's a bit more involved than that, and you'll have to use an exchange to convert your earnings to real money, but every little bit helps right?

The coding community is there too. I follow one of the developers for the Minecraft mod "Minecolonies" and he typically makes around 100 Steem per post for talking about bug fixes to the mod. With posts coming out once or twice a week, he's pretty well off (from a cryptocurrency standpoint at least, but steem is going for about 6USD currently). So with most smartphone users pocketing an android device, I'm sure you can get quite a following.

Anyway, I hope this can help you at least ease your financial burden a little. And hopefully this didn't come off as a sales pitch. :p

THANK YOU bigsupersquid!

I'm an "old retired guy" living in the Mid-West without a whole lot of tech knowledge... This has been my main phone (except for a Text Now WiFi phone that didn't work very well) for 2+ years running the original VM factory firmware. My eyes enjoy the 5.5" screen. Unfortunately the ol' 816 was starting to slow down (kinda like me). I live on a fixed income and don't have the funds for a fancy new phone (cry me a river..., not). I turned to XDA and found your ROM. I did every thing as instructed and much to my surprise my phone has its second wind. The "only" random thing I've notice is an intermittent switching between roaming and LTE depending where I am in town. Everything else seems to be working well. As a side note, during my research on how to root and install a new ROM, I noticed a lot of people complaining about ROM's that you and other the DEV's build. It must be extremely frustrating for you guys/gals. I for one, am so very grateful to you and for your efforts (which you provide for free). You saved me from having to buy a new phone, thank you!!! When my SS check comes in I'll send you a few $$$.
Sincerely,
Al

Unfortunately I have no DATA connection. I can make phone calls (roaming LTE) but can't connect to the internet unless I use Wi-Fi. Oh well, time for a new phone. Still appreciate BSS for his hard work!

Thanks for your advice.
I'm using this ROM on a single SIM, A5 chl version, Vmobile USA. Unfortunately these settings can not be modified on my phone via drop down menu. Did a quick look in build.prop for something to modify but nothing found. Appreciate you for responding. :D

The virgin mobile apn and other settings should be built in.
If it says lte it should have mobile data.... Mine, if I leave wifi on, sometimes the mobile service goes nuts until it's rebooted once or twice.
Turn off the wifi, if the cell signal icon goes repeatedly out of service to in service to lte to no service again, it needs a reboot or two.

+bigsupersquid. Thank you for responding!!! This is exactly what happens. I'll reboot a few times and report back. I appreciate your help SO much! :good::good::good: Also, do you happen to know if the mobile service is "really roaming" or is it a false notification?

I've had issues with that signal thing for quite a while.
Radio is weird, and I'm using the wrong ril blobs (dual sim actually) for the chl just to have marshmallow code instead of lollipop. Virgin never released a 6.0 rom but all the other a5 variants did.
I should look into open source RIL again, had it working once.

It's false. Somewhere in the beginning of this thread or the cm13 thread is a flashable eri.xml zip that labels it correctly as virgin mobile.

No updates about anything. Life is sucky and busy for the last month and I've got zero energy to invest in anything but getting through to the next day over and over again.

I hope you just have a nice day. I'm using this Rom since you started it and I love it. Thanks to you I have a fully functional phone. You have done more than enough. Just have peace and fun. No one can request more than you have done. Many loves from Turkey. And wish u the best

Here's a long shot but I believe it's not prohibited by xda rules.
If any women who like my work live in central Missouri, U SA, and would like to meet and see if there's a connection, they are more than welcome to contact me.
That would help smooth out my dumb life issues that keep popping up.
