Runs great on my good old S3!

I installed this on my S3 a few weeks back, and I'm really satisfied with it so far. It seems to run better than LineageOS even though the battery life is still the same for me. And, the weekly updates are quick to install on TWRP recovery. If anyone has the Boost Mobile variant like I do, I can confirm that calling, SMS, MMS, and LTE all work properly on this ROM thanks to a simple APN fix. Thanks, developers, for keeping this old thing up to date!

Ah i missed it there at the top. Thanks. holding home was set to nothing. I set it to menu button short, and long = menu button now.

When I try to put the phone into wifi hot spot, it sends out a weak signal. hardware failure? or is anyone else having this problem? tried it with 2 phones, both report weak signal.

- basic rom install steps...
- download rom files (optional: gapps + root)
- boot into recovery of choice
- wipe data, cache, dalvik/art cache (data if from another rom)
- flash zips, reboot, feel the MOO
I have confirmation on virgin mobile oh1 baseband. All data is working with apn fix. I'm highly impressed with this rom. Updater works, tested that today. My new daily. Thank you for your work, I'll be donating very soon!!

ROOT'd ROM / alternative kernels

It had been awhile since I had installed a custom ROM on my d2spr when I installed Carbon ROM. With older ROMs I had installed, it was always root'd and I could run programs like SetCPU to change governors and set CPU frequencies and other tweaks.

This ROM does not appear to be ROOT'd, and I don't see anything in the CarbonROM settings that would allow for CPU tweaks and such. I don't even know if setCPU is even a valid tool anymore.

My question, is tweaking governors and CPU frequencies something that people are still doing. If so, what tool is being used?

Also are there any benefits to patching an alternative kernel (ie., skatter), or is the native one that comes with the ROM the best fit.

I was just curious what the standard operating process was for these new ROMS?

Thank You.

Just root it if you want. Most roms come not rooted now because some need to pass safetynet. But you can flash magisk for root and still pass safetynet. Magisk is an excellent root. There aren't really any custom kernels anymore. I have a copy of skatter kernel (for nougat). But then you're just asking for stability issues. The included kernel is likely best for battery life and stability.
You can always go to lineageos (the base rom for this and successor to cm) web page and get the root addon zip.

Contacts won't sync. I am on RELEASE build from 20171222. I am using OpenGAPPS pico from today 1/28/2018. I had this issue with OctOS 7.1.1 and XDA user clearchris (OctOS OP) fixed it on the ROM side. I had to flash his new experimental rom. Here is a quote from clearchris @clearchris from the above mentioned thread. "The issue is that early issue snapdragon chip has a neon flaw that causes problems in boringssl. We added patches to recognize these flawed chips and to not use the neon optimizations on them. All lineage based roms had this issue. I helped them fix it upstream, so it should flow down to the other ROMs quickly."

I have tried all versions of deleting contacts storage/deleting google account/rebooting/checking contacts for funky characters/restoring account etc.. and still contacts will NOT sync - everything else syncs just fine. It shows me the "sync is currently experiencing problems" message but it goes away instantly. Any chance that clearchris' mentioned boringSSL fixes should cure this? I'm not staring at the OP right now to see if CarbonROM is compiled from Lineage or not. The fix was supposedly added on April 21st 2017 to 7.1.1. (note - I don't know what boringSSL is nor have I ever compiled anything - I'm just repeating lingo i've seen)

Edit: just tried full wipe reinstall with the same rom but with opengapps mini with the same results except now gmail also won't sync

Edit: after some time (~8hrs) on opengapps mini today it synced a good chunk of my contacts but many are missing. Still no gmail.

Edit: After 12 hrs or so android is claiming my contacts are all synced. I haven't counted the # of contacts and compared but it looks good. Gmail still no dice. Weird...

Update: I dumped Gmail and replaced with Inbox - it had no issues pulling in my Gmail... I don't get it

Any ideas???

I'd also like to contribute here relating to LTE connectivity with Twigby MNVO.

I have been able to modify ChangeOfJinzo APN zip to flash Twigby apn onto this rom. I over-rode item #7 which was TextNow and replaced it with Twigby settings. Nothing else was able to get LTE to work. Two things to note - 1. The LTE icon is there with a little X but data works and 2. I see no APN settings option on the menu on this rom which is why I used the flashable ChangeOfJinzo zip. Is that the same for everyone?

Edit: the little x goes away after a bit and data is great so far on Twigby

Thanks!

Mobile Data not Working

I love this ROM. Picked up a hand-me-down S3 and decided to update it to Carbon. Put it on Ting. Runs great except that mobile data doesn't work. I have version 20180131 and gapps pico. When I click on Carrier Settings, it says that com.android.phone has stopped.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

yesterday , I installed this rom and it was really really fantastic !!
especially the wallpaper " who's back? " :)

the rom was simple and fast and I liked all the customization , especially the quick setting , buttons setting and recents .
but unfortunately , I didn't like the music app (vanilla) . it was awful !!
also , there are some bugs such as the gestures (in setting) won't open , the battery usage goes down very fast (even the battery saver couldn't help !) .

so... I think that's all what I found . however , thank you for keeping this device alive and giving us hope :)

Did you check to see what was draining battery? It may be bad data, or a rogue app. A proper log would be helpful.

yeah , I checked . but I didn't see anything weird .... you know what? here is the think :

I was on linageOS 14.1 -16102017 . so , I decided to install the CarbonRom by making wipe data / cache / system ..etc on recovery (twrp) . afterward I installed this rom and made wipe data / chace ( just I want to make sure it will be work) . and I waited until it's work!!
then , I just let it on "sleep mode" and I checked it each 10 minutes . but Suddenly , I noticed that the battery goes down 3% - 5% in each 10 minutes without making anything!!
so , I decided to back to the stock rom again (because ,I want to know that issue becomes from software or hardware) and install root , recovery (twrp) , wipe everything(data/cache/system) , install the rom + gapps , wipe again (data/cache) and finally reboot system .

after all that , the issue still not solved!!

Do you think guys this issue becomes from from software or hardware??

Maybe battery is wearing out.
