No, it runs really stable, fast and battery friendly but browser, messaging, email and calendar are still missing. Installing them separately (e.g. using the apks from slim6) does the job.
Your meant to install googles. Browser doesn't exist any longer on aosp. Messaging and calendar was removed because most doesn't use it (better and prettier apps on playstore)

I'm correct in saying this ROM is pretty much AOSP with little things taken from CM?
Aosp + Caf. We do use CM bits like HAL's, telephony bits ( ad in if they did the work and its OK why reinvent the wheel) and android device and kernel repos that aren't supported Nexus
What is the proper way to enable root access for Apps? I don't see the option available to do so in the Developer Options
No root access built in right now. I recommend you flash PHH's superuser for now.

I tried the 0.4 alpha build. There's a lot I liked.
What I really was missing is the ability to quickly check the time and notifications when the phone is lifted up.
I looked for a gestures tab in the settings to enable it but couldn't find one.
Is it a design choice to leave this feature out or will it be added later on ?

You mean like a double tap to wake ? Or the Moto doze thing?
