Update from LOS 14.1 -> 15 possible?

I wonder if it's possible or if anybody here already tried to update from LOS 14.1 to 15 ...
- wiping only "system, dalvik, cache"
- but without wiping "DATA" in recovery and so retaining all installed apps and their settings.

Is there anybody here who was able to update this way successfully?

In a thread of another Oreo Rom it was recommended to dirty flash. I had a very minimal 7.1.2 lineage install with Pico Gapps. Works fine. Your mileage may vary depending what is installed. It is a Deb rom.

Will not really work. Unofficial and official have different signing keys.

I usually try to avoid clean installing- because I'm lazy and don't like losing all installed applications.

That said, it sounds awfully improper to dirty flash between two versions with rather big changes- one of them an early beta with partial functionality... Why start with looking for troubleshooting problems and errors, instead of having a clean install?

Nowadays it's just a brief restoring most stuff from Google's backup (accounts, applications- even the wallpaper). Just complete the setup wizard and in minutes you can have dozens off apps reinstalled. Or, you can create a flashable zip of all your apps with Titanium backup, so you start with all of them apps immediately- it's faster than retrieving them from within TiB later on. Just take care of filtering out system apps while preparing the zip.

I'm sure there are other ways of achieving the purpose, but really, it's a no brainer, and will save you lots of dirty flashing headaches later.

Cheers!

I actually tried to, but was unsuccessful - the Error 7 wouldn't let it proceed. I then updated from LOS 14.1 to 15.0 clean, with no problem, using TB to restore user apps.

Works great so far (an hour or so lol).

How exactly did you restore the apps?
Made first a TB back uo for "user apps + data", making a "update.zip" in TB and restoring it in TWRP?
No... I did that TB backup, yes, but just normally (to the emulated internal SD), then wipe and install the new OS, then manually choose in TB which apps to re-install, one or a few at a time, from within the Android OS.

Have the restored apps retained their settings done before backing up or are only plain apps restored and do you have to do all the settings again?
They all seem to have restored and are just fine with previous settings, except a couple (yahoo mail and theguardian app so far) ☺️

Edit: I've downgraded back to 14.1 after a day or so, at least for a little bit. I had issues with the screen.. rotation stopped working at all, and the touch got very unresponsive, even in bootloader mode. I also had issues connecting with my VPN client. I have no idea what to attribute it to, but I don't really have the time to play with it, which is a shame. Reinstalling 15.0 , even clean, didn't make it better. I'll try 15.0 in a couple revisions. It's close....very close....

This works better than expected, just flashed, all good so far. The minor bugs are not important to me. What I noticed on oreo that my WiFi connects with no issues after reboot. On all n Roms I mostly had to reconnect manually on my flo.
Does anyone managed to get Viper or Dolby working???

Got it working. Nice start for a preview. Initially had problems with home/active apps button not working. Had to redo factory reset and wipe Android folder from SD Card, reinstall and then everything now works.

Look forward to testing the next test release. And awesome to see the potential of Oreo continuing on old 32bit devices.

    LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 8.1 (Oreo), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

    Moderator Information, for latest build:
    If anyone's interested, I am building dailies for the flo. You can find them in my LineageOS buildbot file root at https://lineageos.wickenberg.nu/builds/full and make sure to download for Flo as I'm building for more and more devices.

    P.S. No black boot animation anymore and latest security update. 😁

    P.S. Rocking the latest 1002 build right now while typing this.

    Code:
    #include <std_disclaimer.h>

    /*
     * Your warranty is now void.
     *
     * We are not responsible for bricked devices, dead SD cards,
     * thermonuclear war, or you getting fired because the alarm app failed. Please
     * do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
     * before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
     * you point the finger at us for messing up your device, we will laugh at you.
     *
     */

    LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

    All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit our Gerrit Code Review. Your changelog is whatever was merged into gerrit.

    I'm tempted to move to 16.0.
    Got most of the stuff working already, just some minor fixes left.

    Been busy these days, so it took me some time to went back to work on flo.
    New build includes all recent upstream Lineage changes, April security patch and some device-specific things:
    • Disabled ZRAM as it is more harmful than helpful on this ancient kernel and low-class CPU
    • Went back to 100Hz tick frequency for better throughput and power efficiency
    • Enabled back several BT options to address reported issues
    • Other minor fixes
