If I'm not mistaken, that only works with the stock Pixel Launcher.

Same version? Dirty flash the ROM and see if that helps. If that doesn't clean flash the ROM. I don't know what you did.

It works on apps that support it e.g. YouTube.

I always recommend clean flash... I do that for every build.

It will work both ways. I'm taking about just vendor.img - note that and not factory image.

I dirty flashed the Feb update and have dirty flashed since Dec.
I started with a clean factory image in Dec, flashed Nitrogen and been dirty flashing ever since..

No, you'll have to always flash the twrp zip.
