as for battery, will not say since is subjective
I'm also having gps problems, mine aren't as severe as yours seem to be though. My maps just always says I'm on low accuracy when I start a trip and sometimes lags behind my real location. Then after 5 minutes or so it begins working as normal and is accurate
Full gapps have some "optimisations" there
Recommend to use core and install rest app from playstore
I used core. I'm thinking I might just need to do the calibration within maps again since mine isn't as severe as theirs was
Play store doesn't want to connect to the internet for me after 8.5 update with NikGapps core
If I already have the full version what do I need to do to downgrade to core? Can I just flash them or I need to flash the ROM again and then gapps? Before the last update my assistant was working fine but now when I ask a question it crashes.
If you want to migrate from full to core you can do it following below steps
> Rename the NikGapps-full.zip to uninstall.zip
> Flash the renamed zip (This will remove the installed gapps components)
> Flash Crdroid (to get the aosp apps which were deleted when you flashed full variant of gapps)
> Reboot to recovery
> Flash NikGapps core
> Reboot
The uninstaller will remove gapps components from system, the apps which got updated from Playstore will require manual uninstalling.
Note: moving back to core will not get your assistant working, you'd have to clean flash for that to work.
My Google assistant still doesn't work.

All other Google stuff was downloaded through Google play. The behavior is still the same - the ui shows up and seems responsive but when I ask a question it freezes. Also voice match isn't available for my device it says.

I was with full gapps before but then I was expecting 4%/h battery drain. I want too see first if with core the issue is resolved. If so I am willing to sacrifice my assistant
You need to flash GoogleSearch addon in conjunction with other addons

Flashing Instructions:
Pre-installation:
- At this time, OOS 11 firmware is mandatory (OOS 12 firmware will result in boot issues)
- Download recovery (download - for clean flash, don't use magisk patched boot.img)
- Optional NikGapps core (download - note that you may also need setup wizard addon if you rely on Google restore)

- Backup your data to PC, OTG flash drive
- Enter fastboot
- Flash our boot.img in fastboot

- Now in recovery go to factory reset and confirm the reset
- Reboot to recovery
- Choose apply update and Apply from ADB
- Now install crDroid zip via sideload

- To install gapps, simply sideload gapps.zip the same way you installed crDroid.zip then reboot to system

First time installation (clean flash):
It is recommended to install OOS 11 firmware before you continue (more on that here)
If you already have OOS 11 and no TWRP (and probably encrypted) read here

- Reboot to recovery
- Factory reset from recovery and format data (where you type "yes")
- Reboot to recovery
- Flash crDroid zip and TWRP installer zip
- Reboot to recovery
- Flash gapps and reboot to system
- After passed setup screen, reboot to TWRP and flash Magisk zip

Through recovery:
- Boot to recovery (optional make a backup)
- Flash updated crDroid zip and TWRP installer zip then reboot to recovery

Built-in OTA (slower):
- Go to Settings -> System -> Updater
- Click on Download button for new update and after download is ready, click install
- Updater app will prepare for first boot then finalize installation, but make sure you don't click reboot (you'll loose root if you do so)
- Open up Magisk, go to modules tab, click install from storage and choose TWRP installer zip
- Now head back to Magisk home page and click on top most install button from Magisk category
- From here choose to install to inactive slot
- Reboot and enjoy
