You can, but you will not have the latest firmware. From what I've read, people have reported running the older firmware with MM just fine, but you're more likely to run into problems in the future than you'd be if you went the proper way and got the newest firmware. Either flash it directly (if you're s-off) or go back to stock and get the OTA (if you're s-on and it's available for your phone). Or just try this one and do the update at some later point.
I hope somebody released a good and easy to understand guide for upgrading the m8 firmware from 4.xx to 6.xx for an unbraned (belgium WWE phone) s-on M8 with twrp and ARHD 51 installed. Because i want to upgrade to the new firmware but i am somewhat lost in all the different forums/guides that are available out there for doing it (and im not that super good at flashing and stuff). Hope also that mike realeases v53 fast so whe can flash that one.

It's not working, this time, for me. I've must done 1 step wrong...
Assuming you guys are S-On and bootloader-unlocked from HTC-Dev, this is the basic idea of firmware upgrade:
Return to stock:
0. Make sure you have the latest TWRP Recovery
1. Find/Download Nandroid backup of your stock ROM that matches your current firmware, and put it in your internal/external storage (/TWRP/BACKUPS/
Your serial/
Nandroid folder)
2. Find/Download Stock Recovery that matches your current firmware
3. Nandroid restore the stock ROM in TWRP
4. Flash stock recovery in fastboot
Upgrade Stock/Firmware:
5. Boot up your phone. Settings > About > Software Updates
6. Let it update and reboot when required
7. Repeat 5. until no more update (By this time you should have your latest firmware as well already)
(Optional) custom ROM:
(Download ARHD ROM (or wait for 53), put to internal/external storage)
8. Flash latest TWRP recovery
9. Flash ARHD ROM in TWRP
10. Win.
This is basic idea of upgrading firmware with S-On. The details part is exactly like
what P.Pan posted.
Hope it is clear for you!
