Set the pin and reboot the device the first time.

create the vpn connection and connect.

when you are connected, click on your vpn profile and you should see the status dialog also with a disconnect button.
like in the screenshot that i taken from my nexus player with android 6.0.1 inside

http://s12.postimg.org/km6yqikvx/Screenshot_Dec_27_2015_7_47_51_AM.png

P.S.
To see active profiles at next reboot, you must insert the pin. Is requested when you click the + sign to add another vpn. when you insert the pin, you will see also your stored profiles.

For others: we are using the new boot.img uploaded above that supports vpn.
I tried again and again removing VPN config, wiping credentials, new pin and restart and re-add VPN but that VPN status dialog does not show up for me. Since I'm using a wired connection it would require me to either physically unplug the connection or restart the nexus player to disconnect.

Perhaps I have some weird config stuck somewhere from trying this before applying your fixed boot.img...I've found a VPN app which uses root to bypass android requiring a password / pin to use and it has been working so far allowing me to connect / disconnect at will.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.did.vpnroot

I'm ok with this "work around" and it appears I may have a one-off issue requiring a complete wipe which I'm just not willing to do at the moment.

Thank you again for your help!

I tested the some app this morning :)

for the disconnect dialog, maybe is because i use wifi and you use ethernet.

On my Nexus Player i use only wifi ac 5Ghz and is wonderful. I can understand the use of ethernet only if an user do not have a router 802.11ac capable.

But for all the new Android devices, I recommend it highly.

hey thanks for the rom. nexus player is like 10x better with it. But one small problem, when I try to run the Netflix Android TV version, it works fine if I stay in the app, but if I go back to homescreen and go back to the app, its like the app is stuck in standby mode. Also I lose the keyboard and can only fix by a reset. Normal netflix seems to work fine. Do I have to install leanback launcher if I want to use the Android TV version of apps?

thanks

That only works if your within reasonable distance to the Router and many many people are not. I'm on the far side of this house from the Router and the wireless on that router does not penetrate effectively that far. So since every room here has gigabit Ethernet on CAT6 cabling and a 8-port switch dedicated to each room, I just purchased a very small 5Ghz AC access point and connected it to my switch via Ethernet. It instantly turns any Ethernet cable into a 5Ghz AC wifi access point. It produces ONLY 5Ghz AC & N, and it is designed for just this type of situation. No reason to throw away a perfectly good router just to spend hundreds more on a more powerful router. It is very small and can be mounted anywhere. I got it brand new for $19 on ebay and installed it behind my TV next to all the wireless devices. My wireless AC tablet and phone works fantastic now but if I leave the room and go more than say 30 feet away from it, it then starts to lose connection so that is when I switch back to the Wireless N signal in the house which has more distance ability. Works perfect for streaming media when you run out of Ethernet ports, which I did... lol

My nexus player is right next to my router which is why I use the wired connection lol My router does 5ghz AC...would you say this would be faster than a wired Ethernet->USB 2.0 connection which I'm currently using?

You must root with the last supersu beta 2.65 for android 6 with TWRP as explained in first post, that is also very easy.

i suggest to install the last supersu beta to be more compatible with Android 6
I had issues with titanium backup being unable to restore apps so I flashed supersu via TWRP and now that works fine too.

Here are the links to the latest flashable SuperSu

Good solution.

Instead i use one router 80211.ac 5Ghz and two power line adapters.

the first power line adapter is connected to the main router and the second that is also a wifi access point, can be plugged in every electric socket. ( very portable )

Usually i plug the power line adapter access point in a zone of the house where the main router not cover the area, but i can plug this in every electric socket of my house, therefore i can cover every part of the house with a strong wifi signal when i want.

Read on internet the max transfer rate of USB 2 and of wifi 802.11 ac

480 Mbps theoretically vs 867 Mbps for the 802.11ac 2x2 MIMO

If you have a good router, the wifi of Nexus Player is excellent.

it is understood that the Nexus Player should not be too far from the router

zulu99, you've been very helpful. I'm figuring this out on my own, and whenever I have a question about something I can't quite figure out, I come here. So thanks a lot for everything.

I have another (stupid) question, also about Android games for my kids. I purchased Castle of Illusion which all indicators point to being compatible with the Nexus Player, but the app itself seems to have tablet mode only (meaning the bluetooth joystick doesn't get detected). Is it that I'm not using a compatible joystick (I don't have the NP one) even though I added the keylayouts, or is there a way to modify the app to be from tablet version to AndroidTV version?

I hope my query makes sense.

Also, I've got an OUYA if you want it. Android development on it has halted, but there are a bunch of OUYA owners out there who would love you to pick up the cause. It's a Tegra 3.

This would be an interesting alternative to the new Sony TV. I just purchased a new don't bravia and it is going to replace my nexus player in the living room. Curious as to weather this would work on the new TV?

General Info

  • To fix the webcam in hangouts:

edit the build.prop and change:

ro.camera.number=2
ro.camera.0.devname=/dev/video0
ro.camera.0.facing=back
ro.camera.0.orientation=0
ro.camera.1.devname=/dev/video0
ro.camera.1.facing=front
ro.camera.1.orientation=0

in -------------------->

ro.camera.number=1
ro.camera.0.devname=/dev/video0
ro.camera.0.facing=back
ro.camera.0.orientation=0

Is implied that you must start the device with the camera connected to have the webcam working.
Mic from camera works, but video does not.

i have edited my build.prop, basically we're changing the one line to ro.camera.number=1 and removing the 3 lines starting with ro.camera.1.....
i saved the new build.prop and rebooted, changes show after rebooting in the build.prop file but the camera still force closes after when trying to use it in hangouts. i haven't tried any other apps that would use the camera. anyone having similar results or find a solution?

thank you for the otherwise wonderful rom. it's people like you that give us much more capabilities to our devices which add more value.

After reading your post,
i tested my Logitech C525 with the last Hangouts from Google Play. I have the build.prop like your and i started the device with camera connected.
granted camera and mic permissions in hangouts

ro.camera.number=1
ro.camera.0.devname=/dev/video0
ro.camera.0.facing=back
ro.camera.0.orientation=0

The trick with Netflix HD didn't work for me. I can't stream to the Nexus Player. It tells me to update Netflix on my phone, but it's a fresh install from the Play Store.

Currently setting this up on my Nexus Player ?.

Well, lemme rephrase that... Currently setting up apps and playing with Android on the BIG SCREEN!! Haha. So far, so good. No force closes, everything seems to function as it should and the Logitech K400r keyboard/touchpad I bought seems to have excellent compatibility and is a great companion. Haven't tried DroidMote yet but plan too once I'm a little more settled in.

Thanks for hooking us users up with this, I am much appreciative. I got the NP for Xmas and have been playing with it since in my free time. I tried out the Pure Nexus ROM, which is definitely legit and a vast improvement over the stock setup...BUT, this is just incomparable honestly. As you sorta mentioned, I like to be able to do what I want to do with my device and this just opens the door to so many more possibilities.

I hope to see this ROM continue to grow (as needed or necessary) and plan on sticking around so keep up the great work :)

Sure my friend, i will continue this work forever, because i love Android and i not allow anyone to humiliate Android with ridiculous restrictions such as those imposed in Android TV.

Happy new year to everyone.

Update cast reveiver and netflix for tv from apkmirror.com
Download the apk and install.
Log in to netflix for tv
Reboot your device and it will work.

p.s.
I tested it now and work very well. When you cast from your phone you have HD quality.
However i want specify that Netflix is the only one app that to enable chromecast functionalities, need also the TV app installed.
Is not like all others apps that for Chromecast functionalities the only one thing needed is the cast receiver.
Netflix is always special and break Google guidelines, i don't know why Netflix must have this dominant position inside Android and is not considered like all others companies by Google.
