Hi All, phewwwwww, finally back in the land of the living..... Back onto a known custom recovery....

That was a scary (and time consuming) few hours that I shall not repeat in a hurry...

Through no one else fault, other than my own... The word Alpha, means just that... before Beta and so on... Knew it would be risky, but with everyone's comments on "Recovery Working" in that it has one this time, thought I'd give it a shot...
Hi
@Dekuki,
Yeah, as above.... I flashed this rom, because I saw loads of people's comments saying this one has a "working" recovery, which unlike the original pre-alpha which I stayed well away from... Thought I'd give it a shot, expecting (and hoping) by people's view of "working recovery" meant that, after flashing and playing, you could easily switch back with this new "working" recovery... Unfortunately not so for me, normally I'm ok with Android and managed to root and flash firmwares easily too it. But with this new recovery, I couldn't see a means/way to flash anything via it...
Thanks so much for your advice, regarding the
TAR files... I gave it a shot, but sadly it kept failing on me...

I downloaded the Philz_Touch.tar.md5 file and opened it in Odin, but it would flash till the end and then say fail...

But I tried a different recovery, and thankfully back in business... thanks for all your support!!
In first message there is bold red message says no cwm recovery. You have to use Odin .tar kernel (u can use Philz cwm .tar kernel files with yellow triangle to get cwm or full ROM via Odin and no other way to back.
Hi
@napster100,
Yup, you're not wrong.... And may just do that now, after having this device nearly a year now and been lucky so far. Always found it amazing, that despite all the roms (from GB to KK) that I've not lost any data yet, how the WIPES always leave this bit behind, but remove other data from unused Apps away... Although the data on this partition is not massively important, that I depend on it, there are some 'Config Files' that are handy when re-installing some Apps. If it went, it goes... But does make it handy/quicker when installing Apps again. It does amaze me how much cr*p gathers here though, mainly cached files, and GAME data... (nearly 2GB of race tracks). Got 4GB of photos on there too... One thing I
DON'T like about Android in general, is how messy/cluttered it is when it comes to saving App preferences on SD Internal/External, some folders are very cryptic...?? I think with the pending Alpha3, I am going to go through all folders, hopefully find ONLY the App data I want to save, and everything else can go, and start again... as I only have 800Mb spare on this partition...

But thanks for your help/advice too...
Now might be a good time to backup your internal SD then
You should always backup before flashing and fiddling with things anyway. And it's also good to periodically backup your phone whether you mess around with it or not, because what would happen to all your stuff on there should you say, drop it in water? It's all dead and gone after that. So, backing up is for sure a good idea
Hi
@tysonraylee,
Aye, I didn't see that until you mentioned it... I did already know about the procedure, using Odin (although never really thought of it, to flash just a kernel / recovery.... Always looked at it as flashing STOCK firmware back on) and did try to flash Philz_Touch.tar.md5 file back to my Note. However annoying it kept failing, no matter how many times I downloaded it, which usb port I tried to run it from, it would go through the motions and then say FAILED...

However, thankfully after reading your post on Page2, I gave Bauners JB kernel a try, using this same method.... and so pleased and grateful that it has worked, and I am back to using a known / easier kernel....
I shall indeed take a backup of ONLY the folders I care about on internal, it will be good to start from fresh anyway as my Note is getting cluttered with all kinds of cr*p, all over the place... I will try Bauner Lollipop again, but I think I'll wait for a CWM or TWPR recovery, before trying again....

lol. Thanks for all your help also mate, much appreciated...
On page 2 of this thread I posted a method to restore after taking backup of ROM without losing data and without the need to flash a stock ROM though you have to connect to PC for flashing kernel
also you get yellow triangle which you solve by using triangle away app
But i think its good to take backup of SD data before flashing this ROM as you never know what could go wrong
precaution is better than data loss
Hope it helps
REVENGE SOLVES EVERYTHING
Back on topic of THIS rom... Certainly progressing well, this is the ONLY rom out there so far that is Lollipop for our Note. It is mostly functional as it stands, once booted and switch on 'hardware keyboard' you can then log into your account, and download Apps from the PrayStore... Connects to WiFi and receives cellular signal. Seems really smooth already, although there are some graphical glitches currently...
I think when Alpha 3 or even 4 hits, we're gonna be pretty darn close to fully working, the addition of full access to both media cards will be a HUGE bonus. Only thing for me is I'll wait for a known recovery before I try again... But this is looking very good for us Note users, great to see we've not been left out to die quietly in the corner... Keep up the great work all involved..
Cheers, Lister
