Talking about audio issues:

Does anyone else here experience crackling or distorted sound, especially at low volume, when listening to music using headphones?

It's like playing an old scratchy record, which isn't the aim when trying to listen to something "Hi-Fi".

I'm listening through IEMs, which are quite sensitive to pick up issues with the source.

Thanks
I've got this ever since I got the phone. Even after changing multiple ROM, problem still exists. So my guess is that Mi5 has this "problem" all along. Or maybe it's just certain Mi5 phones.

Hey guys, would someone mind explaining to me how to install the latest test boot img file?

Like others I am experiencing some audio issues during phone calls. People either can not hear me at all or can only barely hear me. There was also an issue of not receiving a phone call yesterday while my phone was on. A text message came in from my carrier to say there was a new voicemail. Not the first time this has happened either.

I am running 8.4.19 firmware with latest 0423 nightly. I flashed 8.4.1.9 fw yesterday morning to try help with audio issue on phone call to no avail.

Would very much like to flash the boot image to see if this can help.

Actually I am fortunate here as the audio for music at any volume is really good quality on any headphones I've used. Since flashing Los 15.1 coming from MIUI official, I do experience a bug where songs will play very quiet sometimes. This can fixed by hitting pause on the track and then resuming again. This has happened in youtube, spotify & twitch. Not a big deal though.

Assuming you are running TWRP, go to INSTALL and the bottom right there is button that says IMAGE, tap that and select your boot.IMG.

That's how I did it :)

Ah...

Yes using twrp 3.2.1.1. Thanks, this worked perfect. Will see how this goes for a few days and report back. I'll just go throw a cone of shame on now.

Had the call bug again with latest boot IMG :(

Only this time, YouTube videos were slow and all sounds got disabled somehow (lock screen sound, phone dial sounds etc). Sound came back and videos started playing fine after half a minute but in call there was no sound whatsoever.

BTW, is there an older ROM version that didn't have any call issues? I would like to try.

Thanks

Can explain what were doing or using where this issue appeared? I am on latest LOS build for few days and everything is working good so far

I was browsing in chrome and when I opened a link in Youtube I noticed that the video was running slow and without sound. Phone was laggy as well bit as I was also charging it at the time so I thought it was some kind of thermal throttling effect...

Then I remembered reading that some people had video issues related to the call bug and I tried to make a call. As I stated above, no sound to and from the person I was calling:(

Edit: Ive been using LOS for about a month and got the call bug many times but its the first time that videos stutter and sounds got disabled all together

Edit2: Only "mods" I have installed is adaway and substratum themes

It seems everyone is talking about the sound issue, but I have never met any problem with my sound(or yet?). Can anyone tell me what is the sound issue? Or how to cause the issue?
Thanks.

@bgcngm,
Unfortunately I can also confirm the bug still occurs with test image. Oh well...
Could this be a (very frequent, it seems) hardware problem, given its characteristics (seemingly random, with some users never running into the problem and others that have it again and again even after clean installs)? I can't help but find some similarities with the touchscreen issues that affected many Mi 5 owners, our dev included... That one also got temporarily resolved by rebooting...

It's a known bug which occurs on all of the Xiaomi MSM8996 devices.

But that's the thing... There's a group of devices (Mi 5, in this case) which have never been affected, and others that are affected with different ROMs, firmware versions, etc. Just like that other bug that caused the touchscreen to randomly stop working, and a reboot temporarily fixed it. That had many signs of being a hardware problem.

It's working fine on MIUI and LineageOS versions older than April(?). So I believe that's not the same case.

Yeah, you may be right, but I think we're seeing the audio problems since march at least. Anyway, the issue is proving to be very hard to diagnose... I think there's only speculation about its possible causes at the moment.

Anyone who experienced sound issue, how old your opengapps version? Might not be related, but you can try flashing newer opengapps.

I didn't have any problem after clean flash with latest opengapps. And not using face unlock (bcs turn on face unlock needs to mess with xml file).

LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 8.1 (Oreo), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.

LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. You will need to provide your own Google Applications package (gapps). LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.

Base source code is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to the project, please visit our Gerrit Code Review.

    Compatibility:
Compatible with all Xiaomi Mi 5 variants (32GB / 64GB / 128GB). Xiaomi Mi 5S and 5S Plus are not supported.
Builds are based off the Xiaomi's Android 8.0 firmware with proprietary blobs from MIUI 8.5.10 dev package.

    Downloads:

    Notice:
    • No custom kernels are supported in this thread. Only stock kernel and official builds will be supported. No bug reports if that's not the case.

    Installation:
    • Reboot to recovery (TWRP recovery for Mi 5 - Direct link)
    • Format /system, /data and /cache
    • Install LineageOS zip package
    • Install [optional] the LineageOS su addon to get root (there are obviously other root methods, but this is the recommended one as it survives to OTA updates)
    • Install [optional] a Google Apps package of your choice (Open GApps is advisable, but stock and super variants are not recommended!!!)
    Important notes:

    Credits & collaborations:
This work is due to efforts from Mi5Devs founding members (@h2o64 and me) that did the full device bring-up. Huge thanks to @deovferreira for all the help during the kernel bring-up after source code dropped. Last but not least, pleasure having @luca020400 and @LuK1337 onboard since the bring-up of the whole Xiaomi 8996 family, that lately did the major work in the O era.

Finally, all LineageOS team would like to thank everyone involved in helping with testing, coding, debugging & documenting! Enjoy!

Who wants a taste of Oreo with working camera? Grab the fresh link in the first post.

All credits goes to @highwaystar_ru for the huge help with the reverse engineering of the stock camera HAL.

First of all, happy new year everyone! :highfive:

I have just uploaded a new build with some more features ported (LiveDisplay is still broken), but the most important of all is that kernel is now based on the latest 8.1 tag and we're now using full CAF HALs (previous builds were compiled with display and media AOSP HALs). Feedback is appreciated, since this is again a major change.

Last but not least, my "new" gemini should arrive tomorrow. :D

So... Android 8.1 sources have dropped a couple days ago. :victory: Next release to be shared will hopefully be based on it (I don't expect any major issue to arise) and I'll keep using this thread. Stay tuned. ;)

New build is up. Nothing really new in terms of features, but fixed audio and front facing camera render. Enjoy!
