HP Touchpad
OnePlus 6T
Yes that is the build I am using and the general purpose of mine as well. I use Naked Browser or OH Browser over Chrome for online manga/manhwa reading and Line Webtoon as my go-to app for the same. I use Ruthless Launcher and that makes a noticeable difference compared to Nova but I have not compared to the stock launcher yet in light use of resources. I disabled multiple system apps that were unneeded along with the heavy ones like Chrome but I used Titanium Backup for that. Your TouchPad is waiting to surprise you and we will see what the future holds on stability of Android 8.1 'O'.

Keyboard and Google Apps

Not sure if this has been addressed yet though I'm sure it has, but no matter how many times I reflash with gapps it still doesn't give me access to Play Store. I'm a novice at this so could it be the rom I'm installing?

Thanks for creating this step by step guide.

I installed the latest Android 9 Evervolve build and the keyboard is missing. I downloaded the APK in the thread but do not know how to install it. Can some one please advise how to install the key board APK? I cannot go past first blue welcome screen because of keyboard app failure.
Thanks.

How would I rollback to KitKat 4.4.4?

I just used this alternate guide to install JC Sullins KitKat 4.4.4, you can do the same if you choose.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hp...-guide-alternative-method-to-install-t3575861

And if you look at this link you can see in the last page or so, that this version of Android is still kicking with success.

I have a questions for you, What version of Gapps did you use?
My first recommendation for you is to use this alternate install method, because it will create a SWAP
partition, and thats what Android 9.0 PI needs.

No Space Error (although plenty of space)

When trying to use Jcsullins Touchpad Toolbox to install Andriod keep getting out of file space. I've kept WebOS, removed Andriod each time, did a "Complete Data Reset" which did remove images, etc. Tried w/ and w/o changing the Partition/Volume size and always get the same error no space error regardless toolbox showing lots of free space.

i can't get [ROM][OFFICIAL][9.0] Evervolv for HP Touchpad to flash for me it crashes on the Gapps - any help?

Don't know what's wrong at your side, but it must be something specific to your kind of setup/files/touchpad. I installed EV9 yesterday new from scratch and everything works like a charm (as far as it could - of course the ROM is not yet perfect). But never ever have there been any crashes.

Please describe exactly what files you used for flashing, in what order you flashed them, where you downloaded them and anything related to your installation method U use.

Can you provide the exact filenames of the files you flashed? For me it looks like you downloaded an incorrect opengapps.
If everything is correct, the only thins to advise is to download the files again and try to install it from scratch again.

For me everything worked out of the box when installing the files last weekend without any hassels.

How do I access /boot folder without android because I cannot install it because uimage.TWRP cannot install in mrt/boot because of lack of space in toolbox. I have tried for many hours to try to get in and don't know how to reach it to free up space?

I have also tried novacom commands but don't know them and what I found online does not work cmd novacom or using the novaterm batch file does not work either.

Hello Roland,
Thank you so much for this tutorial, but i have a problem to finish this tuto
I arrived at step 9, I selected the file FLINTMAN-TWRP-3.2.1-0-03-15-2018 and when I restarted TWRP a second time no longer appears on the menu and I cannot perform step 10.
Do you have a solution to complete this installation?
Please excuse me for my English :(

screen locked and can't be unlock while installing 9.0

hello
I am new on the forum
I followed very successfully almost all the process to install PIE 9.0 on my good old HPTouchpad.
I perfectly went through the Kitkat step
I get stuck close to the final reboot with the last version from the evolver build ev-tenderloin-9-userbuild-2019.08.30.zip
as the screen get locked during the installation , and as the swipe button is not reactive any more,
I cannot respond to the last question about wanting or not the TWRP apps updates,
there is now two superposed swipe buttons, none is active
and so the machine is stuck , the screen gets dark, then I just can reactivate the frozen menu,
but I cannot go any step farther, I cannot even turn off the Touchpad
What can be done to regain control?
How then is it available to step in that deadlock
It seems that the touch on the screen (on the swipe software button) is not even recognized one the padlock symbol appears
Thanks for your help

no sound with evolver 9.0 on my HPTP

Hello
this installation report just follows the short previous note on the locked swipe button during installation.
Even though I was unable unlock the screen with the swipe screen button
it seems that the installation process had reached its end.
I was able to unlock the HPTP with the long combination of pressing simultaneously
the power button and the center button.
Then when I turn on the HPTP power again, it proposed me to " boot android" and it boots showing the evervol pulsing logo
Then, checking through : Settings / About tablet, I am confirmed that Evervolv version is 9 (Actinium)
I used the rom dated 2019-08-30; That's great.

My problem is that I could not ear no sound from the HPTouchpad. I also installed VLC and copied a few mp3 files Through the USB.
VLC run but no sound can be heard, even though that pushing the volume button shows the volume bar on the screen
Now, after two reboots the sound works!
I think I am going to try the previous refernce ROM: du_tenderloin-v13.0-20190328-1316-RC
to see whether things are more stable and straightforward

Everevolv bootloop and then dead

Installed 9.0 but was too slow to do anything. So loaded up 7.1.2 ROM and associated gapps and flashed with Latest TWRP 3.2.1 (which showed up as recovery mode). booting screen kept flashing EVEREVOLV in multicolors but never actually booted. I tried flashing the batch file on tptoolbox in USB mode but computer wouldnt recognize the touchpad. After couple of times I gave up to work on it later. Now the battery is dead and is not charging either with the HP plug in charger or the wireless charger. Am I bricked beyond hope?

Just downloaded the latest file "lineage-11-20200301-NIGHTLY-MLQ-tenderloin.zip" and it worked fine. But... why using Linage 11 when you can have Lineage 14.1?

If you wish to keep WebOS then do the following steps:

Uninstall Android and Clean up your SDcard:
    A]
Uninstall Android completely by using the ACMEUinstaller2, watch the instructional video below. After uninstalling Android you will automatically reboot to WebOS.

How to use the ACMEUninstaller2 (Short Version)
1)Install the Novacom software(You installed this in step 1)

    2)Next place this ACMEUninstaller2

    Recovery:
    Download TWRP-jcs-dm-tenderloin-20140612b.zip here

-Once the files are finished transferring to the HP TP select Unmount Media Volume from the TPtoolbox menu.
-The TPtoolbox will now check the files for compatibility then begin to set your partitions/volumes.
-If the TPtoolbox fails to run it will display which file is incompatible, start the install again and replace the offending file(s).
Note: Flintmans newest TWRP builds cannot be installed with the TPtoolbox and must be flashed from an older legacy recovery.

    7)How to change the Partition/Volume sizes(Required for Android 9.x/8.1.x/.7.1.2)

-Now confirm the OS installation by selecting Yes and pressing the home button. Your Recovery Rom and Gapps will be flashed automatically.
Note: I recommended setting the cm-data volume to 2048mb+. Optionally you can increase the cm-cache to 400mb+, users say it could improve performance with Oreo.

    HPTPPartition.jpg

TPToolbox Auto Installs your Rom, Gapps and Recovery(Please stand by..)
-The details of partition/volume resizing will scroll across the TPtoolboxes bottom output window and the device will auto reboot into recovery. The Rom and Gapps package will now be installed automatically, this may take a few minutes, Please stand by..... Once complete the Touchpad will restart and boot into Android.
Note:You now have the most stable mature Rom installed on your HP Touchpad(Milaq's Lineage 11 Android 4.4.4). You may wish to stay here or come back to this setup if you have issues with newer 9.x or 8.1.x or 7.1.2 builds.
-I recommend making a nandroid backup at this point to easily return to this version of Android.

8)Download and Transfer Android 9.x/8.1.x/7.1.2 install files to the HP TouchPad
-Once the tablet boots to Android KitKat, connect the USB cable to the tablet and your PC.

Note: Flintmans newest TWRP builds cannot be installed with the TPtoolbox and must be flashed from an older legacy recovery.

10)Reboot into TWRP recovery 3.2.1.0, Flash the Android 9.x/8.1.x/7.1.2 Rom and Gapps
-Once in the new TWRP 3.2.1 go to the Wipe menu and select Advanced Wipe.
-Select the System partition and swipe to wipe.
-Click on the TWRP home button(bottom middle) to return to the main menu.
-Select Install, locate the download folder on the left menu.
-Select and install the 9.x/8.1.2/7.1.2 Rom and the Gapps package then reboot.
-After choosing to install the rom click the button to add additional zips, add the gapps package and put a check beside reboot when complete.
Note: The first boot to android 9.0/8.1.2/7.1.2 can take some time, Wait for it...

    Follow up Q & A:

How do I update my rom to a newer version?
-To update your rom you need to do what is called a dirty flash.
-Download the latest version of the installed rom onto the device.
-Reboot into TWRP recovery and flash the rom, just like you did in step 10 but without the gapps package.

How do I change my rom, do I have to start from the beginning?
-To quickly change to a different rom download the rom and gapps to the device and reboot into TWRP recovery.
-From TWRP select the "Wipe" menu then swipe to factory reset (warning this wipes your data).
-Go back to the main menu and install the desired rom and gapps then reboot.
-Be warned switching to various versions of Android like this could cause a boot loop, if you get stuck just start over with the TPtoolbox

    What Roms do I recommend?

The biggest complaints about using the HP Touchpad in 2021 are app compatibility and YouTube crashing or having distorted playback. Jcsullins CM11 Snapshot has good YouTube playback and great all around perfromace.

However older roms might not have compatibility with newer apps but newer roms aren't as mature and reliable. This causes users to try different builds in search of what works best for their specific needs and tastes. Many issues have simple solutions, have a look at the troubleshooting section in post 3 for more assistance here. The HP TouchPad has had an incredible level of community support and aged gracefully but has reached its end of life.

#1 Android Kitkat 4.4.4, I highly recommend these builds for people who want the most stable reliable rom. This is your set it and forget it daily driver. From the golden age of HP Touchpad development, these roms have the least amount of issues and saw the longest period of development. Jcsullins CM11 Snapshot doesn't have issues with YouTube playback like Lineage 11 and is an excellent choice.

#2 Android 5.1 CM12.1 Snapshot by Jcsullins. Another fully functional rom by the Touchpad talented one. Much like CM11 this rom has aged well. The user interface is more modern than CM11 but performance is little slower.

#3 Android 7.1.2 roms are fully functional and have good app compatibility. YouTube works well plus streaming fixes were added to the roms. I'd recommend checking out CM14.1 and Evervolv 7.1.2.

#4 Android 9.0 Pie has similar functionality to Oreo but the camera and Bluetooth don't work. The rom is usable but incomplete. If you don't ever use the camera and Bluetooth you probably won't miss them. Make a backup of your current rom before installing and touring this final HP TouchPad triumph.

    What Apps do I recommend?

Ad-Away, XDA thread here, Github here
Note: use build 4.3.6 here with Android versions 4.4.4-7.1.2
Blocks adds through host file blacklist. Great app been using it for many years, silly video here
    Advanced Task Manager here
Note: From the 3 dots menu/settings/ select, Screen off kill, Regular kill, stat up kill and then disable auto kill notice. You can whitelist apps you don't want killed by unchecking them in the menu.
System app remover (root needed) here
Note: Use a task manager app to identify unwanted system apps popping up in memory and remove them. Frees ram and space, gets rid of unwanted Google apps. Always make a backup before removing system apps.
    PassMark Performance Test here
Note: Useful benchmarking tool to compare and contrast rom performance.
    Quick System Info Pro here
Note: Great app for quick info on the TouchPads specifications, frequency's and volumes.
    3C-Battery Manager here
Note: Great app for testing battery drain and health
    3C-CPU Manger(ROOT) here
    WiFi File Transfer here
    File Manager here
    Cx-File Explorer here
    X-plore File Manager here
    AIMP Music player here
    VLC for Android here

    Troubleshooting

Problem: YouTube videos appear broken and blurry

The solution: The blurry broken playback issue is solved by changing the default video quality from the minimum to maximum 1080p setting and then repeating as needed.

Step by step: Tap the screen to pause the video. Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner. Select "Quality" and set it to "1080p". You will have to switch the video quality back and forth if the problem persists.

Problem: YouTube keeps crashing to the Homescreen

The solution: Reducing background app usage and activity will help to keep this from happening. Playing videos gradually eats up all the available memory and results in crashing. Setting up a task manager app can help to reduce the frequency but won't entirely fix the issue.

    Advanced Task Manager here
Note: From the 3 dots menu/settings/ select, Screen off kill, Regular kill, stat up kill and then disable auto kill notice. You can whitelist apps to kill by unchecking them in the menu.

Problem: My AOSP Keyboard keeps crashing at start

The solution: Download and install an apk for the Google Keyboard here

Problem: Help I'm missing Super User/Root Access

    The solution:
To enable Super User/Root access download and flash this SuperSU zip here.
Note: Root is available by default on most roms such as Lineage11 but missing from Oreo 8.1 DU.
-To get root with Oreo 8.1 DU you must also flash Sumashs SKZ custom Kernel here
-You will need to reflash both of these zips each time you update your rom.

How do I overclock my HP TouchPad?
-Us the Kernel Adiutor (ROOT) app here to overclock your CPU/GPU.
-In order to overclock the Touchpad you must have root access.

My HP TouchPad won't turn on is it bricked?
-If your battery has been fully drained, then you may need to leave it charging for a full day
-When the battery is fully drained it can take the TouchPad a long time to reach even the lowest battery level
-The USB cable does not transfer enough power to effectively charge the tablet
-You must use the wall plug when charging the HP TouchPad
-After charging the HP TouchPad try the following key combinations

key combinations to turn the HP TouchPad off or on when not responding:
-Hold down the Power and Home buttons together for 30sec
-Hold down the Power button and click the Home key 14 times
-hold down, home + power + volume down for 30+ seconds

I've tried everything and the tablet won't turn on?
-If the tablet does not turn on after the previous steps it may be bricked or have a dead battery(white battery symbol with ? in the middle).
-If bricked you can run JCSullins TPDebrick procedure to revive your tablet, links below:
TPDebrick v004 Jcsullins dedicated TPDebrick thread(Rootzwiki)
    TPDebrick v004 Jcsullins TPDebrick thread(XDA)
Download Jcsullins tpdebrick v004 and v005

-Here is an instructional video made by Joshsnice. It's a little hard to follow and has three parts but with this and the forum threads, you should have enough info to get through the procedure.
Note: Run the 32bit version of Linux

How do I replace the HP TouchPads battery?
-Replacing the battery is not an easy procedure and you'll have to find a replacement battery on eBay/Amazon
-HP TouchPad Battery Replacement guide from iFixit here
-HP TouchPad battery replacement disassembly video here

How can I check my battery drain and performance to compare with your guide?
-Test your Battery drain with the 3C battery manager here

-Benchmark your HP TuochPad with PassMark Performance Test here

How can I check my current Android version and System Partition size?
-Get the free Quick System Info pro app to check the size of your partitions and remaining free space here

-Check your version of Android by going to settings/About Tablet/Android Version.

How can I check my MD5 in Windows?
-Download and extract the free Hasher program here

-Run the Hasher.exe, browse to the file you want to check and push the "Calculate" button.
-Compare the MD5 result with the MD5 of the file in question, if it doesn't match exactly redownload the file.

How do I make a Nandroid backup?
I highly recommend you make a Nandroid backup after installing and setting up Android on your HP TouchPad. This perfectly preserves your current configuration and can easily be restored through TWRP, CWM, Philz CWM Recovery.

How to make a backup and flash roms from TWRP recovery Video
    Note:
skip the part about Goo as it no longer exists

    Problem:
Help I can't steam video with apps like Netfix, Amazon, MagineTv, Waipu TV and many others.

    The solution:

Checkout Widevine's streaming fix in his thread here. Download his android 7.1.1 widevine.zip or Android 4.4.4 widevine.zip file and flash it TWRP recovery.
