I apologize if this has been discussed multiple times.

My question is can I install Nougat without going through kitkat? Can I transfer 3 files (ROM, Gapps, TWRP) for 7.1.2 to TP, then adjust volumes, then install 7.1.2. Would it work?

Bootloop

Hello everybody,

I installed Andorid (CyanogenMod) on my touchpad a few years ago. I think it was version 5.0.1. (CM11).

Yesterday I wanted to reset the system settings and now it hangs in a boot loop.

Is it possible to copy the new Android version 9 to the device and install it via the ClockworkMod?

thank you

Thank you so much for this guide. I followed it as is in the video (and kept WebOS), but I'm running into an error.

I can get 4.4.4 to install just fine, but after going through the process to install the following files:

ev_tenderloin-7.1.2-nightly-2017.11.03
FLINTMAN-TWRP-touch-data_media-SELINUX-f2fs-3.1.0-0-5-09-17
open_gapps-arm-7.1-pico-20180726

I get the following error when I try to boot Android from the moboot 0.3.8 screen:

Selected: 'boot Android'

Loading '/boot/uImage.Android'...OK
Checking uImage... Invalid Data CRC

BOOT FAILED!

Press SELECT to continue.

Any ideas why this might be happening and what I can do about it? I'm not real great with the proper terminology, but following the video was very easy.

Hello,

Thank you for your howto @RolandDeschain79. And thank you @SquaredCircle for your post. How did you solve that problem? I am having the same problem and just switched back to KitKat...

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards

Fred

PIN required after update from KitKat

Just installed du_tenderloin-v13.0-20190328-1316-RC on my Touchpad that had been updated to KitKat previously using TPToolbox and all seemed to go well. Had been using KitKat for a few years without issue. However, after final restart the Touchpad wants a PIN and the one I was using does not work.

The Dirty Unicorns splash screen displays and then the time and date as expected. Swipe up and it prompts for PIN

Volume control gives expected display on screen. Swiping down gives settings menu

The two users that existed at start of process are there but PIN for neither account works.

Wondering if I missed something

I am having the same issue. Have tried the other ROM's too LineageOS 14.1 build, Dirty Unicorns 8.1 but getting "Checking ulmage ... Invalid Data CRC".
I have retained WebOS so is there anyway of reinstalling from scratch without killing WebOS?
Yur help is appreciated.
TIA

Novacom Run Error rc=126

I have followed all instructions and successfully installed Java and Novacom following the links at the start of this thread but when I execute the Mac command for the TP Toolbox, I run into an error in my Terminal:

"Bad CPU type in executable"
"Unknown error rc=126 checking for novacom services. (novacom -l)"

I am running Catalina 10.15.7 and my shell is currently zsh though I have tried switching it to bash only to encounter the same error.

Any insights here?

Thanks!

Longshot that I'll get a reply after all this time, but I'll put this out there just in case. Pulled out my old Touchpad on which I had already used the Toolbox/ Roland Deschain79 video to install KitKat 4.4 years ago. Wanted to try to update it somewhat and decided Evervolv 7.1.2 would be the most stable. Assumed since I already had KitKat on it, I could just flash the 3 files (Evervolv Rom, updated TWRP, and Gapps Pico) without re-doing the earlier steps from the video. Updated TWRP & to Evervolv fine as far as I can tell, but I keep getting an Error 70 when trying to install GAPPS...stating along the lines of there is not enough room in the partition. I've tried deleting apps, but continue to get the error even though there appears to be plenty of storage available. Is there a quick way to increase the partition to enable this installation without starting at the beginning of the instructions and re-doing the whole process, ie. the Toolbox part? Thanks!

I am also running into an issue... Whether Android P or Android O, I constantly get popups like com.android.phone has stopped (on Android P it's that android.setup has stopped and I just get a black screen in lieu of the setup menu, on Android O it's com.android.phone). I feel like I am missing a step. Do I have to go through the android setup wizard on KitKat before installing Oreo or Pie? Also tried clearning cache/dalvik cache as we did in the olden days. I'm not sure if that's still required.

I think I was running an android 7 on mine when I went into TWRP (FLINTMAN-TWRP-3.2.1-0-03-15-2018.zip)and used the Automatic_Wipe_All_and_Create_Android_with_1GB_Swap_Partition.zip. From that point I put the
ev_tenderloin-9-userbuild-2019.08.30.zip
open_gapps-arm-9.0-pico-20210116.zip
SR5-SuperSU-v2.82-SR5-20171001224502.zip HpTp_MaXtreme_1836_CPU_Universal_Optimize_Swap_Evervolv_v9_elginsk8r_Pie.zip
into the USB_MEDIA > TTINSTALL directory through the micro USB port from the computer. I flashed the build, Gapps, SuperSu, MaXtreme optimizer in that order and everything booted up with no errors. Since the first zip wipes everything, there are zero errors as long as the USB connects to the computer and gets the files onto the TouchPad without error. Even if you do nothing with the TouchPad after the wipe all zip for months because you need a new computer to transfer files onto it, things still work great. Let me know how things behave with this methodology for you.

I need help. When I try to transfer the Android files to the HP TouchPad using TPtoolbox, Windows says that there is an F drive that I have to format before I use it. In the tutorials, a drive labeled HP TOUCHPAD or something like that shows in Windows, and you can put the Android files inside of the ttinstall folder. Should I format the drive and if so, what format?

Hi guys,

I recently picked up a touchpad and decided to install android on it over the weekend. The 4.4.4 install went well and I updated the TWRP to 3.2.1.0 while changing partition sizes as indicated.

However when I try to copy 9.x Rom and gapps from PC to ttinstall folder I get a not enough space error. I think the external sd card that the touchpad loads on the PC is just 1 GB in size while I need close to 2 GB to copy the necessary files to the device.

Kindly advise on how to increase the storage space for the same. Thanks!

The most recent time I did a clean install, from TWRP I flashed Automatic_Wipe_All_and_Create_Android with _Swap 1GB
Then transferred through USB to USB_MEDIA on the TouchPad the rom, pico GApps, SuperSU and anything Maxtreme available for the rom, flashed them, rebooted and everything worked as expected. I have done this with Evervolv 7.1.2 and 9. Which GApps are you using?

You should not be having issues with too little space with those GApps. I would flash the wipe all zip again to redo the partitioning and go from there with the TWRP it gives you, transfer the files from computer to TouchPad, flash them and boot. SuperSU is for root access management. Maxtreme is a zip that gets rid of some background processes and sets the tablet to function more efficiently.

    A]
Uninstall Android completely by using the ACMEUinstaller2, watch the instructional video below. After uninstalling Android you will automatically reboot to WebOS.

How to use the ACMEUninstaller2 (Short Version)

Download Android 4.4.4 Kitkat install files(Recovery, Rom, Gapps):
    Recovery:
    Download TWRP-jcs-dm-tenderloin-20140612b.zip here
Rom: Download Jcsullins Snapshot CM11 build here
Gapps: Download Base Gapps 4.4.4 here

-Once the files are finished transferring to the HP TP select Unmount Media Volume from the TPtoolbox menu.
-The TPtoolbox will now check the files for compatibility then begin to set your partitions/volumes.
-If the TPtoolbox fails to run it will display which file is incompatible, start the install again and replace the offending file(s).
Note: Flintmans newest TWRP builds cannot be installed with the TPtoolbox and must be flashed from an older legacy recovery.

    7)How to change the Partition/Volume sizes(Required for Android 9.x/8.1.x/.7.1.2)

-Before confirming the OS installation scroll down and choose Adjust Volume Sizes from the TPtoolbox menu

-Scroll down to +1024 and select that
-Scroll up and go back a page in the menu, select APPLY Changes and confirm the partition layout
-Now confirm the OS installation by selecting Yes and pressing the home button. Your Recovery Rom and Gapps will be flashed automatically.
Note: I recommended setting the cm-data volume to 2048mb+. Optionally you can increase the cm-cache to 400mb+, users say it could improve performance with Oreo.

    HPTPPartition.jpg

TPToolbox Auto Installs your Rom, Gapps and Recovery(Please stand by..)
-The details of partition/volume resizing will scroll across the TPtoolboxes bottom output window and the device will auto reboot into recovery. The Rom and Gapps package will now be installed automatically, this may take a few minutes, Please stand by..... Once complete the Touchpad will restart and boot into Android.
Note:You now have the most stable mature Rom installed on your HP Touchpad(Milaq's Lineage 11 Android 4.4.4). You may wish to stay here or come back to this setup if you have issues with newer 9.x or 8.1.x or 7.1.2 builds.
-I recommend making a nandroid backup at this point to easily return to this version of Android.

8)Download and Transfer Android 9.x/8.1.x/7.1.2 install files to the HP TouchPad
-Once the tablet boots to Android KitKat, connect the USB cable to the tablet and your PC.
Note: You can also transfer files directly from TWRP by plugging in the USB cable to the PC
-Transfer over the 3 android 9.x or 8.1.x or 7.1.2 zip files below, Recovery, Rom, and Gapps, to the HP Touchpad. I put the files into my downloads folder.

Download Android 9.x or 8.1.x or 7.1.2 install files(Recovery, Rom, Gapps):
    Recovery:
    Download FLINTMAN-TWRP-3.2.1-0-03-15-2018
    here
Rom: Download the Final Dirty Unicorns 9.x build here
Gapps: Download Open Gapps 9.x Pico
    here

    Optional Roms:

-Replace the above rom and gapps with one of these other choices.
-Use the same recovery FLINTMAN-TWRP-3.2.1-0-03-15-2018 for all 9.x/8.1/7.1 builds

Rom: Download the Evervolv 9.0 final build here
    Gapps:
Download Open gapps 9.x Pico here
Note: If the AOSP Keyboard crashes at start install the Google keyboard apk here

    or

-Select and flash the file, FLINTMAN-TWRP-3.2.1-0-03-15-2018, then go back, reboot and again select TWRP from the menu.
Note: Flintmans newest TWRP builds cannot be installed with the TPtoolbox and must be flashed from an older legacy recovery.

10)Reboot into TWRP recovery 3.2.1.0, Flash the Android 9.x/8.1.x/7.1.2 Rom and Gapps
-Once in the new TWRP 3.2.1 go to the Wipe menu and select Advanced Wipe.
-Select the System partition and swipe to wipe.
-Click on the TWRP home button(bottom middle) to return to the main menu.
-Select Install, locate the download folder on the left menu.
-Select and install the 9.x/8.1.2/7.1.2 Rom and the Gapps package then reboot.
-After choosing to install the rom click the button to add additional zips, add the gapps package and put a check beside reboot when complete.
Note: The first boot to android 9.0/8.1.2/7.1.2 can take some time, Wait for it...

    Follow up Q & A:

How do I update my rom to a newer version?
-To update your rom you need to do what is called a dirty flash.
-Download the latest version of the installed rom onto the device.
-Reboot into TWRP recovery and flash the rom, just like you did in step 10 but without the gapps package.

How do I change my rom, do I have to start from the beginning?
-To quickly change to a different rom download the rom and gapps to the device and reboot into TWRP recovery.
-From TWRP select the "Wipe" menu then swipe to factory reset (warning this wipes your data).
-Go back to the main menu and install the desired rom and gapps then reboot.
-Be warned switching to various versions of Android like this could cause a boot loop, if you get stuck just start over with the TPtoolbox

    What Roms do I recommend?

The biggest complaints about using the HP Touchpad in 2021 are app compatibility and YouTube crashing or having distorted playback. Jcsullins CM11 Snapshot has good YouTube playback and great all around perfromace.

However older roms might not have compatibility with newer apps but newer roms aren't as mature and reliable. This causes users to try different builds in search of what works best for their specific needs and tastes. Many issues have simple solutions, have a look at the troubleshooting section in post 3 for more assistance here. The HP TouchPad has had an incredible level of community support and aged gracefully but has reached its end of life.

#1 Android Kitkat 4.4.4, I highly recommend these builds for people who want the most stable reliable rom. This is your set it and forget it daily driver. From the golden age of HP Touchpad development, these roms have the least amount of issues and saw the longest period of development. Jcsullins CM11 Snapshot doesn't have issues with YouTube playback like Lineage 11 and is an excellent choice.

#2 Android 5.1 CM12.1 Snapshot by Jcsullins. Another fully functional rom by the Touchpad talented one. Much like CM11 this rom has aged well. The user interface is more modern than CM11 but performance is little slower.

#3 Android 7.1.2 roms are fully functional and have good app compatibility. YouTube works well plus streaming fixes were added to the roms. I'd recommend checking out CM14.1 and Evervolv 7.1.2.

#4 Android 9.0 Pie has similar functionality to Oreo but the camera and Bluetooth don't work. The rom is usable but incomplete. If you don't ever use the camera and Bluetooth you probably won't miss them. Make a backup of your current rom before installing and touring this final HP TouchPad triumph.

    What Apps do I recommend?

Ad-Away, XDA thread here, Github here
Note: use build 4.3.6 here with Android versions 4.4.4-7.1.2
Blocks adds through host file blacklist. Great app been using it for many years, silly video here
    Advanced Task Manager here
Note: From the 3 dots menu/settings/ select, Screen off kill, Regular kill, stat up kill and then disable auto kill notice. You can whitelist apps you don't want killed by unchecking them in the menu.
System app remover (root needed) here
Note: Use a task manager app to identify unwanted system apps popping up in memory and remove them. Frees ram and space, gets rid of unwanted Google apps. Always make a backup before removing system apps.
    PassMark Performance Test here
Note: Useful benchmarking tool to compare and contrast rom performance.
    Quick System Info Pro here
Note: Great app for quick info on the TouchPads specifications, frequency's and volumes.
    3C-Battery Manager here
Note: Great app for testing battery drain and health

    Troubleshooting

Problem: YouTube videos appear broken and blurry

The solution: The blurry broken playback issue is solved by changing the default video quality from the minimum to maximum 1080p setting and then repeating as needed.

Step by step: Tap the screen to pause the video. Click on the 3 dots in the upper right corner. Select "Quality" and set it to "1080p". You will have to switch the video quality back and forth if the problem persists.
    HP TP YouTube fix.jpg

Problem: YouTube keeps crashing to the Homescreen

The solution: Reducing background app usage and activity will help to keep this from happening. Playing videos gradually eats up all the available memory and results in crashing. Setting up a task manager app can help to reduce the frequency but won't entirely fix the issue.

    Advanced Task Manager here
Note: From the 3 dots menu/settings/ select, Screen off kill, Regular kill, stat up kill and then disable auto kill notice. You can whitelist apps to kill by unchecking them in the menu.

Problem: My AOSP Keyboard keeps crashing at start

The solution: Download and install an apk for the Google Keyboard here

Problem: Help I'm missing Super User/Root Access

    The solution:
To enable Super User/Root access download and flash this SuperSU zip here.
Note: Root is available by default on most roms such as Lineage11 but missing from Oreo 8.1 DU.
-To get root with Oreo 8.1 DU you must also flash Sumashs SKZ custom Kernel here
-You will need to reflash both of these zips each time you update your rom.

How do I overclock my HP TouchPad?
-Us the Kernel Adiutor (ROOT) app here to overclock your CPU/GPU.
-In order to overclock the Touchpad you must have root access.

My HP TouchPad won't turn on is it bricked?
-If your battery has been fully drained, then you may need to leave it charging for a full day
-When the battery is fully drained it can take the TouchPad a long time to reach even the lowest battery level
-The USB cable does not transfer enough power to effectively charge the tablet
-You must use the wall plug when charging the HP TouchPad
-After charging the HP TouchPad try the following key combinations

key combinations to turn the HP TouchPad off or on when not responding:
-Hold down the Power and Home buttons together for 30sec
-Hold down the Power button and click the Home key 14 times
-hold down, home + power + volume down for 30+ seconds

I've tried everything and the tablet won't turn on?
-If the tablet does not turn on after the previous steps it may be bricked or have a dead battery(white battery symbol with ? in the middle).
-If bricked you can run JCSullins TPDebrick procedure to revive your tablet, links below:
TPDebrick v004 Jcsullins dedicated TPDebrick thread(Rootzwiki)
    TPDebrick v004 Jcsullins TPDebrick thread(XDA)
Download Jcsullins tpdebrick v004 and v005

-Here is an instructional video made by Joshsnice. It's a little hard to follow and has three parts but with this and the forum threads, you should have enough info to get through the procedure.
Note: Run the 32bit version of Linux

How do I replace the HP TouchPads battery?
-Replacing the battery is not an easy procedure and you'll have to find a replacement battery on eBay/Amazon
-HP TouchPad Battery Replacement guide from iFixit here
-HP TouchPad battery replacement disassembly video here

How can I check my battery drain and performance to compare with your guide?
-Test your Battery drain with the 3C battery manager here

-Benchmark your HP TuochPad with PassMark Performance Test here

How can I check my current Android version and System Partition size?
-Get the free Quick System Info pro app to check the size of your partitions and remaining free space here

-Check your version of Android by going to settings/About Tablet/Android Version.

How can I check my MD5 in Windows?
-Download and extract the free Hasher program here

-Run the Hasher.exe, browse to the file you want to check and push the "Calculate" button.
-Compare the MD5 result with the MD5 of the file in question, if it doesn't match exactly redownload the file.

How do I make a Nandroid backup?
I highly recommend you make a Nandroid backup after installing and setting up Android on your HP TouchPad. This perfectly preserves your current configuration and can easily be restored through TWRP, CWM, Philz CWM Recovery.

How to make a backup and flash roms from TWRP recovery Video
    Note:
skip the part about Goo as it no longer exists

    Problem:
Help I can't steam video with apps like Netfix, Amazon, MagineTv, Waipu TV and many others.

    The solution:

Checkout Widevine's streaming fix in his thread here. Download his android 7.1.1 widevine.zip or Android 4.4.4 widevine.zip file and flash it TWRP recovery.
