Ok I'll follow your suggestions. The only thing I care about is those seconds before the call screen appears. It happened to me before in CM10, and sometimes in this build, but rarely. Maybe when the whole system is slow.
I think there are some memory leakage troubles with this last build, or sth like that. Sometimes I have to reboot, otherwise apps cannot load, or load REALLY slow.

"System" service normally uses 39 / 40 Mb in the ROM's I've been using. Here too, but when the system is slow / almost unresponsive, it goes up to 80 or 90 Mb which is too much. Never had System using that much memory. Every time the lag appears, I check that, and System is using that much memory. Maybe sometimes, when everything's fine, it does too. But never saw that yet.
Yes, there is a memory leak that does happen occasionally, but it's not only with this ROM, but with a lot of the CM10 ROMs. I use AutoKiller Memory Optimizer which has a fast restart option, which doesn't really restart your device, it just kills/restarts certain processes that keep the phone running. That frees up the memory and system resources. There are other apps that do this, and you can even do this through ADB by stopping/starting zygote, but it's much easier with an app.

Well, if it's stuck at the logo, then there's not much else you can try, except take the battery out and wait a couple of minutes, then put it back in and turn it back on; if that doesn't do anything, then yes, SBF, 50% is enough to do that; it doesn't take more than a couple of minutes to flash with SBF anyway.

If you can still access the bootmenu, then go to your CPU settings, change the governor back to Interactive, and preferably reset your CPU settings to default, save, and then reboot.

i did all that
n now cant access anything
cant even charge the battery
but anyway tysm!
flashing sbf now
You can also try this:
Head into Stock recovery by holding down vol up/down while booting (not sure which one, forgot) and wipe data from there. Then see if it boots up. If not then surely sbf needed.

Camera improvements

Brief:
Well, based on what I've uploaded for CM10 some time ago, now I've tested with this rom.
The best I could get so far is better audio, slightly better video, and activate both microphones for recording, like it happens on stock froyo (stereo sound).
This is only a media_profiles.xml modification. and for me only worked after DISABLING hardware aceleration for Gallery. Otherwise: sound bug at the end of the video.

Changes:
Video bitrate from 6000000 to 8000000.
Audio freq up to 24KHz.
Mic channels from 1 to 2, both mics working.

How:
Download the attached zip, uncompress, and place the xml file under /system/etc. Before replacing, I suggest backing up the old one. Then SET PROPER PERMISSIONS AND OWNER: rw-r--r-- / root-root. Disable hwa for Gallery. Reboot. Tell me if it worked. Hope it does.

* EDIT:
1- Raw video test (via Mega): https://mega.co.nz/#!ck9AEJyI!VHTGEHO0OJ93WK3ZIvhAEkfHNMIR3lT5Si3r_Gf7Ilg
2- Sometimes I get some silent seconds at the end of the videos. But it's like 4sec / minute of video. So as I couldn't fix it for this rom, I'll use these settings and just record some secs more. You can try using a worse audio quality, it should work. That is modifying the attached file from THIS:

Code:
        <EncoderProfile quality="high" fileFormat="mp4" duration="30">
            <Video codec="m4v"
                   bitRate="8000000"
                   width="848"
                   height="480"
                   frameRate="24" />

            <Audio codec="aac"
                   bitRate="96000"
                   sampleRate="24000"
                   channels="2" />
        </EncoderProfile>
To this:

Code:
        <EncoderProfile quality="high" fileFormat="mp4" duration="30">
            <Video codec="m4v"
                   bitRate="8000000"
                   width="848"
                   height="480"
                   frameRate="24" />

            <Audio codec="aac"
                   bitRate="96000"
                   sampleRate="12000"
                   channels="2" />
        </EncoderProfile>

Yes it was a Blechd0se post from 14th June. I wasn't right, actually: it didn't have the old wifi drivers, but some tweak/fix that didn't work for anyone. You have actually commented that post too. It's under the CM10 4.2.2 thread.

I've installed BBS but I'm not finding anything weird but normal system operation. Just some whatsapp and browser (totally normal). I do control which apps are running in background, so it would have been strange. The batt is draining pretty fast. And sometimes the whole system get unresponsive for like 15 seconds, something with the memory or background network use. I didn't realize yet.

I think I'll try the 09.05.2013 version you're using. Hope it's not worse in other aspects. Should I restore my actual /data partition? I don't wanna lost all the stuff I did...

Thks :good:
I do agree that the battery does drain relatively fast and i have a 3500 mah battery and its nearly dead by the time i get back home in the night but it has been like that for quite some time on the cm 10 and 10.1 builds as well. As for the rom usually very fast but yeah the memory lags and unresponsiveness occurs now and then not too frequently luckily and the random reboots occur but usually those reboots occur twice or so and then it seems stable for a while .

Well, the first time I flashed the ROM it started rebooting every time the phone tried to wake from sleep. I posted about it a few pages back. The first time I flashed the latest build, it would take about 2 - 3 minutes to show the boot animation on each reboot. The second time I flashed each of the builds it worked perfectly. I'm on the first build now, and haven't had a single unwanted reboot. And yes, occasionally system_server and/or systemui start hogging up the memory; in those cases I just kill of systemUI and/or restart android with a fast reboot using AutoKiller Memory Optimizer.

It doesn't restart the kernel, so it doesn't affect your uptime count. I'm assuming it just stops and restarts zygote or something similar.

I ll Give Autokiller Memory Optimizer a run , I was addressing the battery issue post . From all that i read everywhere i would say there is something wrong in the jb source code itself because there are a large number of posts (various phones) stock and custom complaining of lags,battery drain etc. Anyways i ll report back by tomorrow or so after i give it a run

And yes, I think there might be a problem with the apps your installing or the battery itself, considering you have the same problem on other builds, because I have the default 1650 mah battery, and I can't imagine how much time I'd get one charge only, and that's considering I'm in a place where the carrier I'm using doesn't have much coverage, so most of the battery use is spent just on the regular phone connection.

Well, you could post the BBS screenshots for each category under "since unplugged", or preferably set a custom reference and then don't touch the phone for at least an hour or more, and then take the screenshot. Also, post a screenshot of your detailed battery usage graph using the default system battery information.

Will do tomorrow or over the weekend . Have to crash now got work tomorrow lol :) !!! Thanks for everything @Antiga Prime

Also yeah i just the baseband from southeast asia from 3.4.3-361 to 2.59 ( this used to be my baseband earlier ) just that for cm 10 and 10.1 i was unable to choose anything else but 361 and 331.

Do u have an after market battery!
Cuz lately don't get more than a day on one charge
What are your settings?
CPU settings?
N whatever
How old is that battery?
I'm getting a new battery. Would you recommend any? A link would be overly helpful

I wouldn't know, like I said I'm using the same default 1650 mah battery that came with my phone, the battery is almost 1 year old.

CPU settings:

19/300
34/600
44/800
61/1100

I use SetVsel to limit the speed to the lowest CPU speed (300 mhz) while the screen is off. I use Deep Sleep Batery Saver / Green Power Premium, to keep WiFi off and turn it on every 15 minutes for 1 minute, that's so that I don't have to be constantly checking my phone manually. I hardly ever use 3G/2G data, and when I do, like when I'm away from a wireless network, I also control the times it's on with any of the previously mentioned programs. You don't need them both at the same time.

The packages I have disabled are:

package:com.android.providers.drm
package:com.android.vending
package:com.eclipsim.gpsstatus2
package:com.google.android.apps.uploader
package:com.google.android.backup
package:com.google.android.gm
package:com.google.android.gms
package:com.google.android.gsf
package:com.google.android.location
package:com.google.android.syncadapters.bookmarks
package:com.google.android.talk
And I use a script to enable/disable a few of those (idea thanks to @YetAnotherForumUser) when I need access to the Play Store, which is a lot easier than freezing/unfreezing manually with Titanium Backup.

Every time I flash a new ROM I wipe /data and /system, and that usually clears any odd bugs that sometimes come up with certain ROMs. I also make sure the ROM is reading the proper battery percentage by letting it discharge fully on the first use, and then let it recharge non-stop until it reaches 100%, and leave it about 1 hour more. You can delete the battery stats, but it doesn't do anything anyway, aside from clearing it's info. It does not help improve your battery life.

And most importantly, I don't spend endless hours listening to music or browsing the internet with my phone, I need it as a phone. If you spend a lot of time with your phone's screen on and/or having it do something constantly, it shouldn't come as a surprise that it only lasts 10 hours.

Regarding Baseband, I can use any band that uses the 850 frequency, but the one that gives me best battery life is the one that is closest to my region. I also monitor constantly what processes are using my battery before they ever drain too much power.

About buying a new battery, I've never bought one, but I for sure wouldn't buy one on Ebay, since I've read about many people getting sold fake chinese batteries.

System won't boot anymore (data partition troubles)

Well, today happened to me the same thing that happened on latest CM10 and was the reason for me to trying another ROM.

I'll reproduce what I did:
- Turned my phone off. Removed Battery and SIM. Put battery, and, while OFF, I left it charging.
- Some hours later, I turned the phone on. In the middle of the boot (bootlogo), I removed the battery because I forgot to put the sim again.
- Inserted SIM, battery, turned it on. After that, phone won't boot anymore. (stuck in bootlogo)

Something happens with the /data partition in these latest JB builds for DEFY. It's like it get corrupt. I don't remember what I did before this trouble happens on CM10, but it was NOT removing the SIM. I actually don't remember interrupting the boot neither, but I'm not sure. What I know is that a lot of people suffered the same thing.

So I tried different ways to fix it, even wiping data and cache partitions from stock recovery, and then restore an old (working) data backup. No success.
The only think that worked was on bootmenu "FORMAT DATA AND CACHE TO EXT3", wait, reboot and then restore the old working data partition.

However, just after the boot problem happened, I made a full backup before touching anything. So I have that /data partition, and I tried restoring it. But didn't work. After I delete dalvik, the system hangs on "STARTING APPS" (just after hashing all the apps again) .

I hope this help somehow. As for me, I lost all the changes but it's ok... I'm used to it :p

3 days since fist try...

Ok, so first of all, thanks to all of you who help us improve our little defys life :)

TLDR on the bottom

I was using quarx rom (amazing) but ...it was SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO slow on my defy, so i wanted to try another one....and i have to say, this one is the best of two worlds

Its like having the speed of the pikachu miui edition and the jb at the same time!!..

Ofc... it doasnt come cheap....

im having 2 "kind of" big issues:

1- For some weird reason, i get "phantom touches" every know and then... don't really know why (and nobody else said so...so...kinda worries me) <-- this solves itself pretty easy...turn off the screen /turn on the screen and Voila!! problem solved...until next time...

2- Battery...
It was one of the reasons why i try this one (supposed to have an amazing battery)...well, i was use to have 2 days on the pikachu edition. 1 day and "some" in quarx....

...in here i cannot reach 1 day.... barely makes it home on time to start drinking from the power supply.... <--- ofc i could buy a usb cable for my work, or take another battery..but...still kinda of a bummer.

Don't know if it has something to do with the fact that im trying the latest version of this rom...may be on the previous one this wasnt happening?

But to be honest. im sooo happy with the fact that i can have a JB that actually moves fast...i really don't care....

It still amazes me how much can this little phone give...

...gotta love the defy....

------------------TLDR-------------------

PROS:
Super Fast.
JB.

CONS:
Battery drain fast.
Phantom touches.

OVERALL:
Really like it.
Staying on it.

Thnks to all that makes this possible.

Well, last night I installed the latest build while testing the wifi jamming fix found by @sunnyqeen, even though I can confirm it also works on this ROM too, every time I rebooted and/or flashed a file I got stuck on a black screen after reboot. Wiping /data fixed the issue, but after rebooting again it got stuck again, no idea what it is, but I tried more than 4 times.

1.- Buy a screen protector and your phantom touches will go away. It's most likely due to sweaty fingers. ;)
2.- Well, you have to find out what is using your battery. Use BBS for setting custom references and then leaving your phone idle for an hour or more and see if there is anything waking it. The battery won't drain for no reason at all, especially if you've been getting good results with other ROMs, then it's clear that your battery still works properly.

I haven't used the latest build, but on the first build I'd get about two days of battery life easily, you just need to make sure there aren't any processes/apps running wild while you're not looking. Ideally, the awake time should pretty much equal the amount of time the screen spends on. Everything else should be spent in Deep Sleep.

You could try using Greenify and Deep Sleep Battery Saver.
