I have tried SPFT 3 too, same behavior.
(Of course tried reinstall VCOM drivers, other USB ports but not another computer.)
(slightly more info in the original post.)
Will need to charge the battery somehow....
Are you plugging in the USB *after* pressing Download in the flash tool. This is important since the com port is available only for only a few seconds after connecting the USB .

KNOWN COMPATIBLE UNITS:

IconBit:
Callisto 100, 300

SimValley:
Pearl AW414, AW420/1

UMEOX
X201

Omate
TS-1/TrueSmart 512MB/4GB Edition
TS-1/1900MHz 1GB/8GB Extreme Edition
TS-1/2100MHz 1GB/8GB Extreme Edition

For Root, download Chainfire's latest SuperSU package and flash in TWRP:
SuperSU 2.44
You can add my Podor PW306 and the Dcool DW8 to the list (same exact product).
Using stock bootloader & preloader and flashing through SPFT v3.1332.0.187 (v5 didn't work due to BROM error) it worked. It did give me an overlap error upon loading system.img, but ignoring it was fine.
Rooting with the .zip and then using root shell to restore IMEI worked.
It's nice to finally be on a nice 4.4.2. Ever since we found that S8 firmware flashing proceedure I've been itching to upgrade but I couldn't work out how to get root/play on the IRONMAN firmware or a working home button on the S8 firmware.

One issue I'm having though is my ext SD. The "mount SD" button is greyed out in Storage menu and the external SD card is not shown. Anybody else having issues with external storage?

---------- Post added at 01:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:53 PM ----------

My TS is not starting the upgrade, "Download DA" hangs for minutes. After starting I have to pull the battery to get the PC to recognize the unit again.
No response on power, but the device manager sees "MediaTek" (after pulling battery at least, when tring to download it changes to Unknown device) so the preloader does seem to work.
Any hints?

I have tried SPFT 3 too, same behavior.

First of all don't worry. There's no known way to brick these watches permanently.

In SPFT 5, the bottom right hand corner of the window will tell you what USB device is available. Don't press download but plug in. Does it say Preloader/VCOM? If so, it's just a soft brick and it requires a stock reflash. If it says MTK USB, it's a "kinda hard" brick and you need to flash ONLY the stock preloader in download mode (still have your stock scatter loaded though, so it knows where to put the preloader). This little window of insight within SPFT 5 will also let you know when the device disconnects, so you can check that the cable/drivers are giving a steady connection.

for my pre-may 1/8GB EU TS-1, the SD works fine.

however, cant connect to 3G (2G works fine, so it might be just my unit), When clicking on the Phone app, i get "App not installed" although i can call by using Contacts or Google Now.

No, you need to re-add your APNs to restore 3G coverage.

The app not installed is a launcher bug. The launcher itself doesn't remove apps without uninstalling them. If you use a different launcher the bug goes away (or you can just go to another screen, there should be a working icon).

Thanks Dan. will try it out. what i meant though is i cannot even get my TS to detect any 3G networks to even connect to them much less Connect to the 3G APN.

UPDATE: still no luck with 3G as above. tried with another sim card with another carrier but no luck either. i had the same issue when on ensec 0706 EU and was hoping the new ROM might help :)

I have swiped thru the various screens but there is only a single Phone icon across all the screens on mine :)

No biggie though!

UPDATE: Seems to be working - TRY Flash Tool v3.1332 instead of the latest V5.1352. It is now flashing fine as mentioned by Dan.

FINAL: My TS boots up fine with KK now! If you face the checksum error as i did, try using SP Flash Tool v3.1332 instead! - LINK HERE: http://androidxda.com/smart-phone-flash-tool
This finally got me past my BROM error issues. (It was error 4008, I believe). It seems like once you attempt to flash a rom with one version of the SP Flash Tool, you need to try on another. I kept getting stuck between 20 and 96% completion during the flashing process. Once I switched to v3.1332, it worked right away. When I attempted to reflash using the 3.1332 version, I got another 4008 error. Then I flashed using version provided by Korunoson, and it flashed properly. I have no clue why that is the case.

Thanks to all who helped with this process. Especially Lokifish Marz for all of you early work and Korunoson for keeping up with the latest developments.

Please help a Noob

I spent about 10 hours the other day trying to upgrade my Omate Truesmart to Kit Kat and I ended up bricking my TS. As comprehensive at this guide is to upgrade to Kitkat, its not as easy at it seems. First off the download is missing files for the Kitkat rom, I was unsure if the TS had to be Rooted before hand, among many other problems. What I'm getting at is I would really appreciate a guide for people brand new to this device. Imagine an X201 TS coming brand new out of the box, what are the complete steps to getting KitKat working on it. I really appreciate all the work the XDA developers have done for this Smartwatch.

Thank you

Again this is not really for "noobs"

It's not missing files now (has been fixed for at least a few days now). A couple aren't picked up when loading the scatter file and need to be manually selected as noted. It doesn't need to be rooted and doesn't say that it does.

You haven't bricked your device particularly if you did a backup. Pull battery or wait until it runs down and try again would be my advice based on your limited report - not really enough info to say more.

Has any work around been suggested for lost IMEI that cannot be restored via MTK DROID TOOL (I have a backup)?
Also can some guide me where I can find the steps to install SU?

MTK Droid Tool can restore the nvram & IMEI by copying files to the root directory of your phone. To do this, it needs ADB in root mode. First root the new firmware with supersu.zip, then turn on usb debugging, then connect the phone. Open MTK DT then click "ROOT" in the bottom right, then click to grant root on the watch screen (you must have changed text size to small first). After that, use the nvram restore and IMEI rewrite functions to replace the settings.

There aren't any files missing. And no one ever said this was easy, it's unfortunately the the only way right now.

Second, you can't possibly brick your device if you followed my guide with my files. It is literally impossible.

Not working for me. I got --- ERROR : pttycmd1 device NOT found! :(

The FIX !!!
Turned out, the problem is the secro.img. Flashing with the one from this KK rom erase all things related to baseband.
So, here are 2 options fixes if you don't have baseband after flashing, assumed you already rooted.
1. Try to restore your NVRAM backup from your previous ROM with MTK Droid tools. If you get "can't found pttycmd1" error then do step 2.
2. Open SP flash tool with scatter from the the KK rom and ONLY select PRELOADER & SEC_RO. The preloader should use the KK rom and the sec_ro you should use your previous working rom (that you back up before flashing KK with MTK droid).

Now, my TS-1 is showing 3G and the GPS is working fine. Perfect!

I am not worried, this unit was semibricked already (no mic and no GPS, bad BT).
(One usage is to get Swipe Status bar working in KK.)
One kind of bricking is to run out of battery.

I do not get any response from SPFT unless downloading. When downloading, I get "Mediatek USB" directly, but nothing more, so for sure it is "kind of hard" bricked...

Screenshot after trying to flash preloader from the backup prior to the upgrade. Same result whatever is downloaded and for Format+Download.
No settings in SPFT is changed from what I know, I have tried enabling "DA DL with checksum" too.

@kuronosan

for what it's worth.
on JB when my sensors weren't working, they were working in the engineering mode. But not in any app.
So I tried to do the same on KK and the error in the logs is /dev/RT_Monitor not found.

Yup! IMEI is showing after a restore from MKT Tools although i just cant connect to 3G networks or data. Everything works fine for 2G. Just strange. In engineering mode, i can see the 2000 WCDMA mode selected and set as well.

It's not bricked "for sure"

Do you have the driver installed for the Download Agent. After plugging in, a virtual com port is created and the Download Agent is loaded, this then creates a different virtual COM port with different USB ID and different drivers (or at least the same with the different vendor and/or product IDs) IIRC. It seems you have the first stage com port working. Have you installed the dpinst.exe/DPInst64.exe drivers? Try re-installing them (run the .exe as administrator manually - it doesn't seem smart enough to do it on it's own).

Take a look at Device Manager for unknown devices when it stops.
