You must have an SGH-T999 and not have the LTE version (SGH-T999L) if you wish to have working data.

No. He originally left in the T-Mobile kernel but WiFi didn't work. So he's putting the AT&T stock secure kernel in. You'll need to flash the insecure kernel to gain root.
You have to do this because baking in the pre rooted kernel causes a bootloop.

Maybe I need to reflash to check I didn't miss test it, but the kernel in the deodexed should already be insecure. This is also what will be in the PureStock version. Don't recall it ever giving me an issue being baked in. I think that was just on AT&T?
Either that or I'm more confused than I know! I'll have to reflash to double check k it I suppose!
