Rom lockups

If i flash any 4.3 or 4.4 rom my nexus will lock after about 2 or 3 minutes of using the rom and i will have to hold the power button to reboot it. The only rom i havent had this issue with is CM11. Anyone have any idea? also i clean flash the roms and only install gapps and a custom kernel.
