Hotspot Mod

This is the flashable hotspot mod for software version OJ6 only. It is a hybrid mod that will work for my odexed and deodexed OJ6 roms. It is a hard coded mod and will continue to work after a prl or profile update wether done by the user or pushed to your device by the network. Simply flash the zip in recovery and reboot. Use this mod at your own risk.

Two ?s.
Is this using the Native hotspot apk?
and
How can you tell if it is working(aside from burning through my 3gb of allowed hotspot data)? I did nothing with this phone before rooting and flashing your tar's. Also i just returned to sprint after 10yrs for the unlimited data, so I dont know if there is some notification of it using the allowed bandwidth or the unlimited. I guess that would be a third question. haha

Well if you actually pay for mobile hotspot then don't flash the hotspot mod. Go back to the stock rom if you already did flash the hotspot mod. This is the exact reason I don't include the hotspot mod in my stock roms because some people actually subscribe to the hotspot feature. For customers who don't subscribe for the hotspot service, their accounts do not specifically seperate the data usage from hotspot or on device data usage. Sprint can tell how the data is used but for those who don't actually subscribe to the mobile hotspot feature, there is no seperate charges for data used via mobile hotspot... however if you subscribe to mobile hotspot then I would suspect that your data used over hotspot would be reflected on your bill. My advice to you if you do in fact have an unlimited data plan and you don't actually want to pay for "limited and metered" mobile hotspot usage would be to call sprint customer support and have the mobile hotspot subscription canceled. Then on your next billing cycle you should be ok to use the free mobile hotspot mod without the risk of running up your paid hotspot service's minimal data allotment. I hope this all makes sense. But be very careful with mobile hotspot until you figure out how you want to go about using it. I have had no extra charges on my bill in 8 years by using hotspot hack on my samsung phones and i have seen no reports of this happening to anybody else either. But no matter what, Sprint can differentiate the way data is used on your phone whether it be hotspot or "on device" usage. The difference as far as i can tell is that your data isn't strictly monitored if you are not subscribed to mobile hotspot. This is my opinion on this. Use hotspot mods at your own risk because there's always a chance you could be charged for using it and the data used over hotspot. We all should know this by now. Good luck.

Yes it is Native Hotspot. And as far as data goes, if you are NOT subscribed to Sprint Hotspot this basically unlocks it and uses your unlimited bandwidth. I have unlimited plan and use it all the time on road trips for the kids tablet and ipad.

Thanks for the response. I guess now Sprint gives you 3gb of hotspot data free and automatically with the unlimited plans. I do plan on removing this feature from my plan. The whole point is to utilize the "unlimited data". i just wasn't sure if it altered the native apk so sprint could not differentiate the data usage or like you say just unlocks it. Your reply does make sense.

Unless they changed it again very recently, they were only offering the "free" hotspot to accounts WITH limited data - they tried to convince us to give up our unlimited data plan by offering free hotspot, but by keeping the unlimited data they still wanted to charge for the hotspot... So you might want to double check that you're actually on an unlimited data plan, if you're not being charged for the hotspot...

This is the last I'll say of it so as not to clutter the development section with unneeded/wanted debates. As of 1/5/2016(at least thats when I know because thats when my service was started) Sprint offers 3 gigabytes of free 4G LTE hotspot with the UNLIMITED data plan. After the 3 gigs are used the hotspot is slowed to 2G speeds.
That said, i have flashed the odexed version of this rom along with the hotspot mod and so far my account shows 8 gigs of unlimited data used and 0 of my 3gb's of hotspot data. I know for a fact at least half of that data was used via the hotspot and i have seen no slow down. So my hat goes off to you tx_dbs_tx, whatever you modified for the native apk seems to work even if you already have access to it. So far......... we'll see if that holds true after my first couple statements.

The hotspot mod is not actally inside an apk file. It is in a java framework file and is hard coded to be enabled. I think you will be fine with mobile hotspot either way.

Hi tx_dbs_tx,

Thank you for your work on this rom and ones before it, I have been using them across devices for years. I had a question regarding the original post with instructions for this rom. I'm on the hybrid-x 3.0 OG5 rom, which is a 5.1.1 rom as you know, and the instructions make me question that I might need to still flash the OJ6 base rom, even though I'm already on 5.1.1. I didn't want to assume I didn't need to and that cause an issue, so thought I'd better ask.

Thank you again for your hard work!

Each new software release by Samsung/Sprint usually contains a new modem, recovery, bootloader and a few other critical firmwares. So it't usually best to update your phone's software to the latest version to avoid problems caused by having an older bootloader with newer software. It can cause problems with charging, wifi, fingerprint scanner, etc. But before you rush to take any new ota update you may want to do a little research and make sure root still works on the new software by reading what others have posted. Somebody has to be the guinea pig. LOL!

No; you're already updated. But since you rooted with Chainfire Auto Root...

I would recommend that you full un-root while system is booted. Open SuperSU application and scroll near bottom and select full un-root. Restore stock kernel in that step but not the stock recovery. Do that before you start to avoid conflicts with root methods. Then follow the OP install directions.

Did you get your old Note 4 fixed or replaced?

You will need to edit or replace the apns-conf.xml file located in system/etc in order to have the correct apn's for your carrier. You can get this file and other necessary files from a rom made for your carrier. The sim may also need to be unlocked so it can be used for other carriers. By default it is locked to the sprint network. As for the hands-free activation feature, you can delete the fiolder & file named "SprintDM" that is located in system/priv-app and that will stop it for good. You can also remove other sprint specific folders in system/app and system/priv-app. My advice is to find a rom that is more compatible with the type of network that you are using your phone with. this will make things a lot easier. As you know, this rom is for the Sprint network here in the U.S. Good luck.

Edit: Another thing that international users need to understand is that the U.S. carrier's software also includes specific values inside framework and settings.apk that tell the software what type of network the device is setup for. So even if you change/edit a multitude of files such as apn's, etc, you still will have problems for this very reason. It's not a simple task to convert this rom to work on another network correctly.

Here we go again. Two completely stock builds of Android TW-Lollipop 5.1.1 (N910PVPU4COJ6) for the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 4.. I built both of these stock rooted ROMs myself from the official Samsung tar ball. The ROM will self root upon flash and it has init.d/busybox support. Knox and Sprint Itson has been removed completely. Both ROMs are completely stock with all of the original factory installed apps. Available in odexed and deodexed . Both ROMs are identical other than one being odexed and the other deodexed. Also included in both ROMs in this thread is the stock OJ6 modem and APN patch to ensure you have the latest modem & APN's from the latest OJ6 software.

Other than the removal of Knox and Sprint Itson, these roms are all stock in every other way. They are stock and will stay that way. Please don't ask for mods, changes, etc in this thread. These roms are intended for those people who want the stock roms in their original form with the addition of root and removal of Knox & itson, as well as other members who need a good solid base for their rom projects. I give permission for other dev's to use this rom as your base and I highly recommend that you do so because it is bug-free and built from the official Samsung tar ball. However I do expect credit if you use this rom for any other project. If you like my work please press that Thanks button, rate this thread and consider a kind donation! Enjoy!

Important Notes: Before flashing ANY Lollipop 5.1.1 TW-based ROM, including this one, you MUST first do one of the following:
    1. Take the Lollipop OJ6 ota update on your phone.
    2. Odin flash the stock OJ6 rom tar using odin on your PC. It can be found HERE

Once you have correctly updated your Note 4 to Lollipop 5.1.1,software version N910PVPU4COJ6 DO NOT... I repeat, DO NOT attempt to root your phone with CF-auto root or other methods. It will soft brick your phone. Instead, you ONLY need to flash the latest TWRP recovery using odin on your pc. Nothing else. The ROM zip will pre-root your phone as well as flash the stock root-permissive OJ6 kernel by @freeza

If you are still on any KK or Lollipop 5.0 TW-based ROM such as NIE, OB7, OE1 , OF5 or OB7 (including any KK AOSP/CM-based roms) then you MUST first update to Lollipop 5.1.1 OJ6 by one of the two methods I mentioned above BEFORE flashing this ROM. Failure to properly update your device partitions to 5.1.1 OJ6 firmware absolutely WILL cause problems. You have been warned, Please don't ask for help if you did not follow my simple instructions above.

Flashing instructions: ***Before beginning the flash/setup process MAKE SURE your battery has at least 50% charge and/or connected to the charger!!!***

    1. Backup anything you don't want to lose off your internal and external storage to another location just to be safe.

    2. Download the rom using your pc. (downloading with your phone has a much higher risk of file corruption. Not recommended with large files).

    3. VERIFY the MD5!!! Once the download has finished, compare the AFH MD5 using a MD5 tool on your pc. (Google "md5 checksum windows").

    4. Put the downloaded rom onto your internal storage or external micro sd card.

    5. With phone powered off, reboot into recovery by pressing and holding volume up, power and the home button until you see the Samsung logo then release all buttons.

    6. Once in recovery choose the wipe button and do a factory reset three times. Optional but recommended is to wipe "Data". This will wipe all of your user data such as google accounts so MAKE SURE you backed up first like I said in step #1 above! Next go to "advanced wipe" and select all of the partitions EXCEPT micro-sd card and internal storage. Internal storage is optional but recommended when first updating to a major software revision such as 4.3 to 4.4 or 5.0.1 to 5.1.1. The reason is to remove left-over data from previous version of Android and start with a clean slate.

    7. Choose the "Install" option and select the rom "Sprint_Stock_N910PVPU4COJ6_xxx" from either your internal or external micro-sd card. It will flash the rom and give a confirmation once completed.

    8. Press "Reboot" then "reboot system". You should get no prompts or warnings about not having root.

    9. Initial rom "optimization" will take several minutes while ART builds its cache and the phone will remain on the yellow Sprint Spark screen for about 10 minutes (for the deodexed ROM). Let the phone optimize for at least 10 minutes and the screen will eventually turn off or show the setup wizard once it finishes. When the screen turns off simply turn it on and proceed to setup your phone.

    10. Once finished with the setup wizard, wait a few moments and the phone will automatically install the Sprint apps. You must either "accept" or "disagree" with each and every google prompt for these apps or else the installs pause until you do so.. Also you will be prompted for the "connections optimizer". Quickly set it to what you want and close it. That's it! You're done!

flashing anything on your device is done at your own risk. There is no way myself or any other developer can guarantee that flashing this ROM or any other file will not brick your device or otherwise cause some other type of damage. This is just a standard warning. I am not responsible for anything that you do to your device. However, all of my roms, mods, etc are pre tested by myself and other testers prior to public release.

I want to hold off on doing anymore roms until we get Marshmallow. I don't want to spend a bunch of time working on these %.1.1 patch ota's just to have to turn around and start over when we get Marshmallow. I'm fine running OJ6 for a while. I have stuff going on right now anyway so my time is limited. If anybody sees or hears any news on Marshmallow for our Sprint N4 make sure to shout out!
