No, it is simply the best way to verify a file. The reason they are more prevalent now is because the file size of ROMs is getting enormous (S5 TW ROMs are well over a GB). Back with the HTC Hero, Gingerbread ROMs were 100-200 MBs and the possibility for a bad download was far less. And the md5sum not matching could cause ANY problem, it means you don't have the same file I uploaded, any possible file could be missing or corrupted.Thanks for the heads up about the MD5 but I honestly don't think that's the issue.
I'm not understanding why everybody keeps mentioning the md5 recently. I've been through many, many roms and devices and not until recently have i been getting people telling me to check the MD5. Are SGS3 MD5s less stable than on other devices? I think from ALL the years I've been messing with android I only really had MD5 issues with my HTC Hero CDMA and it was a memory card issue not a file issue.
