That's one reason... In almost every rom since google created that app.. Devs re-enable that option... BECAUSE there is no reason for some apps to have access to so much info............... Other than, its a way for google to get around your privacy settings, cause some of that data isn't blocked by simply turning off data or revoking the permission or something like that..... And those apps send some of the data back to google to help with ads and location reporting........ And a lot more they don't need to know.

Keep in kind that disabling internet access on some apps... The app can still contact google and playstore and send them data from our phone... Which is why I use avast firewall to block it from even seeing an internet connection in the first place..... There are other firewall apps that do the same thing, but I like all the other options that come with avast too.

I wanted to do a clean install of 8 coming from 7.3 and I wiped data for rom install using philz and installed rom without issue. I planned to do some restore of apps from titanium however, google started automatically restoring apps, I tried to cancel the sync but it keeps going, When google restores apps does it restore data to? I do not want data corruptions from previous install to carry forward.

Thanks.

Sorry disregard, found option to uncheck in backup and reset

Does "sync app data" restore data if I have the above unchecked?

For future reference, JeffATL, those should be clean installs without the data. Same as you would get if you install from Play.

I think I found a way to turn off the caller id announce without having to revert to the S3 caller interface... at least it worked for me. It makes no sense but if you turn on Hands Free mode, go into it's settings and un-check Incoming Call (Read out callers' information when receiving incoming calls) and then turn Hands Free mode back off it will no longer announce the caller id name. I even turned this setting back on and then turned Hands Free mode off to verify and it once again announces them. I tested this several times back and forth and having the Incoming Call setting un-checked seems to remedy the problem.
Hope this helps others that, like me, want to keep the S5 interface but not have the phone announce the callers.
I've tried this several times and for whatever reason its not working for me. Any other ideas??

Remove them from your favorites... It only reads favorites.... I ran this s5 app for 2 months and didn't know that it announced calls because I had no one in my favorites... When I added them it read them, removed and it stopped.

Would you be able to share some knowledge as to what is safe to ApOps/Reciever out.. I poked around Google but didn't exactly find what I needed. I also purchased the Greenify Donation package today. I know you are very experienced. In a nutshell, I am asking your preffered settings, if you would not mind sharing.
OK. I actually feel that this WOULD serve some purpose posted. And would help others, so I apologize @bilgerryan if this is too OT.

App Permissions/App Ops....

This is MY PERSONAL procedure... I follow these basic rules.

1. KEEP IN MIND THAT SOME APPS MAY FC OR ACT "FUNNY" WHEN CERTAIN PERMISSIONS ARE DENIED. SO SOME EXPERIMENTATION IS REQUIRED.

2. CONTACTS - If it's an app that integrates with or shows your contacts in the app... Such as Facebook, google+, whats-app, etc..... Leave the permission if you use it to message make calls or use it regularly and wants your contacts to show.

If not, Such as games, camera (I don't see a need for that one), etc. (why does the stock accuweather widget want access to my contacts and call logs???),

I deny them... Privacy. And battery.

3. LOCATION - if you don't use that app for navigation, location based ads (google offers), or location based alarms/actions (personal assistants such as Eva Personal Assistant and the like)......

Deny the permission. Saves battery. Period. And there's no need for a game to track your location. Privacy.

4. Camera - only the camera should have this permission in my opinion. With the exception of banking apps for deposit by check pic...... Why does angry birds need to take a pic whenever it wants...... Creepy.

Denied. Privacy and battery.

5. Audio focus/Record Voice/Ringer volume- Same as above but with the exception of voice recorders, music identifiers, personal assistants, clocks and alarms and the like....

Deny it otherwise. Privacy. And potential battery.

6. Call Phone and Messaging - only apps you use to call and message with, and apps that need text authentication. Should have this access.

Deny it for all other apps. Privacy.

7. Calendar - only calendars, alarms, and apps that display info from them should be allowed.

Deny all others. Battery and privacy.

8. Device Settings (keep awake, modify settings) - I only give this permission to apps in the SYSTEM folder, and other security, maintenance and development apps like antivirus, cache cleaners, ram savers, benchmark tools, logcats, greenify etc....

Deny the rest..... Privacy and safety.

9. Keep Awake - this one, i use an app called Wakelock Detector to track what apps are keeping a wakelock on the phone and draining battery. (that app also works with greenify so check it out). Things like movie players, music players, games and things you want to keep the screen on... leave that permission (greenify will kill the lock if the app isnt in use). Most other apps use it to keep the phone awake when syncing data.... but most system apps need the permission.

Deny by your preference. CAN EFFECT BATTERY. Also Experimental.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ABOVE STEPS ARE MY PERSONAL PROCEDURES. THERE WILL BE APPS THAT DONT ACT RIGHT AFTER DENYING CERTAIN PERMISSIONS, SO THOSE APPS ARE ENABLE OR UNINSTALL SITUATIONS. BUT THOSE ARE THE RULES THAT I PERSONALLY FOLLOW.
********************************

AS FOR GREENIFY...

You do NOT want to greenify apps you use for location based notifications.... Alarms.... Phones calls.... Text/Instant messaging... Calendar event.... Scheduled taskes (tasker, antivirus, personal assistant, google now)....etc.

Those apps will not notify, set off the alarm, allow the call to come thru... If you greenify them.

It is safe to greenify pretty much every single other user installed apps (downloaded from playstore or installed normally with a file browser)..... That you don't use on a regular basis...... If it acts slow or doesn't give a notification that you want to receive... Ungreenify it and reboot.

SYSTEM APPS ARE EXPERIMENTAL

If it doesn't have a user interface.... It is a try and see app.... Usually better to leave it alone with the exception of google play services... I have it greenified.... Seems to slow down it's reading of my apps data and app updates.. May just be me lol....

Apps such as connection optimizer can be frozen or greenified, calculator, gallery, camera, maps.... Pretty much everything but your home launcher, mms, phone and contacts, and calendar can be greenified.........

AGAIN SYSTEM APPS ARE EXPERIMENTAL SO YOUR RESULTS MAY VARY

Following these steps, I feel confident that MOST of my personal data is safe from unneeded eyes.... And with a STOCK battery and regular use of the phone, o get about 11 hours out of my phone.... So these steps, in my opinion, make a huge difference in battery compared to others I have seen.

BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO KEEP IN KIND THAT EVEN FOLLOWING MY STEPS EXACTLY, MAY NOY GET YOU THE SAME BATTERY LIFE... APPS YOU USE, HOW OFTEN YOU TURN ON THE SCREEN, HOW YOU USE YOUR PHONE AND MANY OTHER FACTORS, WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR RESULTS.

My phone is reading all the contacts not just the people in my favorites. The only thing I can think of, it's because all my contacts are synced to google. I tested it with my house phone and a friends phone, one was in my favs, one was not, the phone announced both.

Ok this is weird... I have turned off every setting that has anything to do with talk back, handsfree, accessibilty, ect.... Not only is my phone announcing contacts, it's also reading off non-contacts. I've searched this forum and others, and still can not figure why or how to turn this off.

Anyone have any ideas?? I have even went as far as turning off talk back in the app manager.

Weird... You could just push the SecSettings and SystemUi to priv-app. Why is it only working for me? Everything matches up, I have quadruple checked it. Oh well, lost cause I guess.

Its a bummer i put alot of work into that i wish it would work ...didnt work for me either....
