You encountered that issue because you did not reboot to recovery prior to installing Gapps.
Maybe you looked into the wrong tutorial, it's mentioned in the correct one here:

Regarding camera app: I can recommend GCam. You can find a compatible version in our Telegram group.

i am currently running pe13 but the battery life is quite poor and the auto focus is terrible so sometimes when u have to use your camera to identify files it doesnt work at all

This is completely normal.
Device will format / clear data upon unlocking the bootloader.

I figured it might be that, i was wondering more about why it was suddenly in Chinese. I don't remember seeing that happen before, i've flashed multiple Oneplus devices, including Lineage 17 on this specific phone back when it was first supported. Probably the A12 update brought this language change.

Hey Jan, battery life is pretty much the same as the latest OOS (I didn't tested this accurately but with my usage it seems the same), for the camera I use GCam 8.1 and 8.2 who seems to work as well as the same versions on OOS, I don't use the AOSP cam since it's very basic

Thank u so much for your reply, i specifically had problems when scanning cards or qr codes inside of apps, sometimes it took me like a solid 5 minutes to get the camera focussed, when i have time I'll try out this rom, very excited

Hey! Kudos to the maintainer for the awesome job. Jus wanted to share some issues that I came across. The font for some reason is kinda messed, it looks kinda odd at times. The battery dies at the end of the day, Donno if it's jus me. And I remember seeing face unlock as a feature in the site, but couldn't find it in settings!

2. If i want to install GApps, where can I get this from, a quick Google just give me dodgy apk sites?
3. Also the Lineage instructions says if I want GApps, then I need to install before booting, what if i've already booted, do I need to factory reset?

1. If you are coming from OOS12 then the answer is yes. If you are coming from a OOS12 firmware based custom ROM, you can simply wipe data in recovery and flash the official LineageOS ROM zip.
2. Download latest MindTheGapps-13.0.0-arm64 package from here: https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=322935
3. Follow the instructions under "Installing Add-Ons" here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/avicii/install

If you already booted and install Gapps afterwards you will most likely encounter problems. Please follow the instructions in our Wiki.

Sorry to be a pain.
I had your unofficial one installed, then i just flashed the official one.
So would you recommend I wipe, re-flash the officail one, then flash Gapps?
I've now read the instructions but nothing about what to do if you boot prior to flashing Gapps, it just says not to.

Yes, I strongly recommend to wipe data and start over again (like you said) in order to make sure that everything is installed correctly.

Nope, I daily it without seeing any problem, even after flashing the Gapps after a boot (I just needed a factory reset after the Gapps flash)

I have an issue that my phone won't find my Ikea Hub and Heos units on the LAN. Wasn't an issue before upgrading (didn't test in OOS12) and haven't had the issue with other phones I've tested with.

Trying to figure out what is wrong, but might at some point try reflashing modem.img to see what happens.

Other than that it seems to work flawlessly.
